Not surprising. James Jones is putting together a nice season. Through 9 games he has 47 receptions. Yesterday, he had 8 receptions. I saw that, and figured he must have had a 100+ yard day. Not quite. He had 8 receptions for 20 yards. How the heck does a WR get only 20 yards on 8 receptions?!

When their offense is so anemic they have to try 5 WR screens...

he's an emergency outlet for them; many of his catches are screens and/or quick slants. He's still not getting a lot of separation and now better CB's are playing him. He's a #3/#4 but since Oakland has no talent at WR he functions as a starter and better CB's play him than when he was in GB

He's a decent #2

None of that explains 8 for 20. He's a strong guy that breaks tackles, or gets an extra yard or two. Before yesterday, he was 39/443, better than 11.35 yards/reception. His long yesterday was 10 yards, meaning he had 7 for 10 yards. Apparently, they had some quick throw to him at or behind the line that they thought would work, but didn't; yet they must have gone back to it time and time again. To have that many receptions, and average just two steps beyond the line of scrimmage is "impressive".

Maybe he ran the wrong way on one of those screens..........

It took Carr 41 attempts to break 100 yards yesterday. Their passing game was getting smothered.

I thought about that, so I looked in the gamebook. He didn't have any play with a big loss to explain the low net.

James Jones has one major strength and thats defeating press coverage. Without watching any of these plays I'd guess that he was seeing nothing but off coverage and was subsequently thrown a lot of screens and dump offs that went nowhere.

He got tackled for a loss once at least, as the game was televised where I live.

Well, you know what they say. Some of those passes in the West Coast offense are just long handoffs. 8 carries for 20 yards, I've seen worse :-)

But he usually could shake the first tackle on those quick hitters on off coverage. He would usually get 4-6 yards easily. That was his job before it was Jordy's if I remember correctly.

Crummy blocking on WR screen, or a slow release from the QB can just make you a sitting duck on those kinds of plays too.

Similar numbers for Packers TE - 5 catches 17 yards.

But at least their five receptions included a 1 yd. TD and a 4 td. TD, plays that could not go any further than 1 yard and 4 yards.

Lots of pundits have been making a lot about Jones and Decker getting deals this off-season.

Guys might be great 3's, but that sure as hell doesn't mean they can do the 1 WR job.

They're complaining about Jones? That makes no sense. He signed for 3 years, $10M. He plays through injuries, and catches most everything thrown his way. He isn't paid all that much.

I would take Jones for that, unless I was as deep as GB in WRs. Good signing for Oakland, who can probably use his leadership and work ethic.

Agreed, if someone could ever be said to be worth anything in particular, Jones is worth that. Anyone who signs a contract for 3 years for $10 million should be said to have signed for James Jones money.
