It's an important decision that doesn't need to be rushed.

Usually there's a hot name out there that teams are anxious to go after. There are usually a couple after wild card week-end, but not so much this year. Todd Bowles is the only one who got some attention, and it might just be a Rooney Rule interview. Everyone seems to be waiting for Adam Gase to come available.

Rex Ryan’s incredible run as the Jets’ leading man ended in spectacular, Chernobyl-level disaster. But does anyone doubt he’ll be back — bigger than ever?

For his own sake, I hope he is able to keep the weight off. :)

I think that until Rex gets himself a good OC and stays out of his way, he'll be nothing but a blowhard that the media loves.

He certainly had such skills in Canada. Marc Trestman was loved in Montreal as the Alouettes Head Coach. Suddenly in Chicago he loses those skills?

That's a fricken load of bullshit !

I felt early in this season that Marc Trestman was in trouble.

Marc Trestman simply landed himself in a place that had to turn ugly for him. How would you like to coach a team with Jay Cutler as your starting QB? How would you coach a team where star players have had their day !?

He allowed Brandon Marshall to spiral out of control. He did not hold Jay Cutler accountable .
His press conferences were downright embarrassing : after each brutal loss, he would claim the team was in "a good place:, had "great practices" - and worst of all, his players were all wonderfully "compliant".

Not sure Brandon spiraled out of control until the end, when it was cleat that team had failed and there was not much to play for.

What did Trestman in was his inability to manufacture offense like the year before while Cutler did not play better and his O line played significantly worse. There was no one to raise their game.

WOW! A lot going on in Denver!

I'm just trying to comprehend it all and how it may relate to Peyton Manning's decline in the second half of the season. That clearly related to the quad injury to his right leg that was obviously played way down.

Get a load of this:

http://espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs/2014/story/_/id/12154238/peyton-manning-denver-broncos-played-torn-right-quad-last-month-season

" Since the Broncos' Nov. 16 loss in St. Louis, Manning topped 300 yards passing just once -- in a "Monday Night Football" loss in Cincinnati -- over the final six games of the regular season.

Over the final nine games of the regular season, six of those on the road, the Broncos went 6-3 as Manning -- who has two more years left on his contract -- threw 17 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. "

".... "I didn't play as well consistently in the second half of the season," (Peyton) Manning said.

" ..." I can't give you a great reason for that. Played well at times, but probably not as consistently, certainly didn't play as consistently in the second half of the season as I did in the first half." ..."

Comment woodbuck27:

"When first you aim to deceive."

It looks to me as if this is about a mans ego. Well...men EGO's. Surely John Elway knew the full extent of this issue.

In the quote above Peyton Manning tries to cover up...to deceive everyone except those who really knew. They tried their best to keep the TRUTH in a close circle. The TRUTH of the extent of his injury and thus limited ability to perform.

To Peyton Manning and not playing well:

Again..... " I can't give you a great reason for that. " Peyton Manning

How many people did Peyton Manning deceive with his BS!? How many team mates and loyal Bronco fans were let down or deceived? How many NFL fans that have a side related interest ie that great group that bet on the outcome of games?

What a mess of Peyton Manning Bronco shit ! What a mess of John Elway shit !!

Broncos players, others shocked by John Fox’s exit as coach

By: Nicki Jhabvala The Denver Post

Comment woodbuck27:

Obviously John Fox and his coaching staff had an outstanding performance over the course of his four seasons as the Bronco Head Coach. A 46-18 record, four consecutive AFC West titles and a trip to Super Bowl XLVIII is an outstanding record but all the same it comes up short. Life in the Denver Bronco Organization is defined by whether or not your on point in regards to winning the Lombardi Trophy. The John Fox coaching team failed in that endeavour.

This post contains the reactions of various Bronco players etc. to John Fox leaving his position as the Denver Head coach.

Read the comments made by WR Emmanuel Sanders half way down the page. His comments on what is expected in the Denver Bronco Organization; his take on what happened in the crushing loss to the Indy Colts.

I watched that game and it didn't appear to me that Indy's goal to win that game was ever really threatened. Only one team was there on that day to win and it wasn't Denver. It came down to the Broncos executing and as a team they failed miserably before their fans on that day and again failed this season to meet the highest objective.

" The Tampa Bay Buccaneers went all season long without their hand-picked offensive coordinator. That won't be the case in 2015.

The team on Thursday announced that former Falcons play-caller Dirk Koetter has been hired to lead Lovie Smith's offense. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported that Koetter agreed to a two-year deal with a team option for a third. A source informed of the situation told Rapoport that Koetter was Tampa's top choice. "

A carousel to be sure. Just guys moving around and around, it's a safer hire for GMs. New face like Chip Kelly sometimes work out, but for every one of those there's a Steve Spurier or that guy who flopped in Tampa waiting to happen. Why take that chance when Ryan, Fox, Mike Smith, etc are out there? No wonder Dick Vermeil's phone probably still rings.

But the Jets/Bills need to find someone to sling the ball around.

I can't believe Rex took that job, I can't see it working for him. Bills have a damn good defense, how much can he really improve it? There is no offense to speak of in place, and I doubt it will improve by his hand. Maybe he brings in Trestman and it clicks? A Gary Kubiak hire could make things awkward with Peyton Manning

Posted by Mike Florio on January 14, 2015, 11:36 PM EST

" If Kubiak alters his not-this-year stance and ultimately becomes coach of the Broncos, a couple of awkward wrinkles could emerge. '

** Kubiak’s offense requires periodic quarterback mobility that wouldn’t necessarily work with the largely immobile Peyton Manning.

** Kubiak coached the one team that Manning was interested in joining three years ago, but that wasn’t interested in Manning. And Peyton has a long memory; he wanted to play for the Texans, the Texans weren’t interested, and Kubiak’s fingerprints reside somewhere on that decision.

Is the dog wagging the tail or is it the other way around in Denver?

John Elway doesn't need money to remain strong? He has players to sign and he gets there or he pays for more of what he got from Peyton Manning over the last three seasons.

If I was him the experiment would be over and I'm looking for a long term answer at QB. Let Peyton Manning set his much desired NFL records with some 'Sucker team'.

I'm not a Peyton Manning fan. Too often I've seen him deep in the Red Zone pass for a TD and ignore his RB. He's about the records 'a me first now' NFL player. It's been that way and Peyton Manning for obviously too long. In my view he's now far worse than Brett Favre ever was. He's a busted record pursuing his need of records. A worn out playoff loser and you need to be a part of a team with a common desire before any individual desire.

The Denver Broncos went all in last season and looked marvelous on paper. That failed again and now John Elway needs the good sense to say 'no more' to Peyton Manning. It's that or John Elway and the Denver fans might prepare to witness Peyton Manning's tenth one and done in next season if the Broncos make the playoffs.

On the flip side I say bring him back John ! Show us that your not the GM that Denver needs.

Fox is a solid, if not elite coach, and a clear upgrade over Trestman. He's taken 2 teams to Super Bowls. Yes, he had Manning last year, but he did it with Jake Delhomme as his QB in Carolina. That said, the Bears have a lot of problems. He will have a chance for some success there only if the new GM knows what he is doing.

He has, for the most part, been a good coach at getting a team back to competence (.500). He helped stabilize Denver's defense, though I suspect that he and JDR were both pretty chafed by Elway signing a bunch of names on defense and dropping them into their laps. Defenses (and teams) are best built, not bought, and Chicago's defense is just about out of parts. Kyle Fuller looks like a player, but they have a lot of work to do. His (and Pace's) first year are going to be spent re-stocking and rebuilding the defense to even move that unit back into the 15-20 range.

I hear what you're saying, but one of my lifetime fan goals was to see the Packers even the series. The more dysfunctional the Bears the more likely it will happen. But it always feels better to beat a decent foe (2010).

Unless Jay stops being Jay, I don't see much difference than when Lovie was in Chi and the same pattern will emerge for Fox like in Carolina. Losing Dumerville hurt. He and Von Miller were deadly at times during the Tebow year.

They picked up Pot Roast Knighton last year off of the Jags and he's been a nice addition.

They had DRC last year and basically replaced him with Talib this year, both guys on 1 year deals. They signed TJ Ward and DeMarcus Ware this year, too. A lot of guys commented on Ware's leadership, but wore down at the end of the year and was just not as effective. Talib's been pretty good against lesser opponents but he got run around by Hilton. Part of that is on JDR for not moving Chris Harris over, maybe. TJ Ward has been pretty good but he got lost at times also.

You're probably right that the signings worked out pretty well, although I think their vision was a smothering defense like the Seahawks but they got one that was a slight upgrade over last year (8 v 9 in the FO rankings, though DVOA was ~3% better). It still couldn't get a stop when they needed a stop. I still think that the type of defense they were envisioning takes a few years to build just due to the communication involved and the necessary esprit de corps.

Yeah, its hard to go from good but vulnerable to smothering in one year, I see your point.

I actually don't envy Elway this situation. Favre was at least making a decision based on whether he wanted to go through another season. With Manning, there is the additional question of how his arm will heal and hold up.

How long did it take for Tramon to get full use of his arm/shoulder and return to form? It was definitely longer than one year. I want to say 2.5. I remember the second year back he didn't seem right yet. Not sure of that extended to year 3 of recovery.

RT @TheOnion: Report: Peyton Manning Played Entire Season With 38-Year-Old Body http://onion.com/1udB4Sr

He's playing it up about as good as he might:

The report today is that Peyton Manning will miss the Pro Bowl.

Anybody here have the rights to take on any bets that Peyton Manning 'won't' return in 2015?

If so that person will win all bets.

Report that Alex Van Pelt could be in consideration for St. Louis OC job. Also a report that Cleveland may be interested in Clements for OC. That makes no sense to me. Why would Clements want to for to Cleveland for the same job? http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/289050451.html

RE: Clements to another organization:

More $$$$Money$$$$

More recognition and opportunity.

His resume is impressive and with TT and MM in place maybe Green Bay looks like a Dead End for him? Maybe it's simply time for a change?

" A licensed attorney, Clements worked from 1988-92 for Bell, Boyd & Lloyd (now known as K&L Gates), a Chicago-based law firm. He pursued his law degree during his playing career, graduating magna cum laude from Notre Dame’s School of Law in 1986. In 1994, while on the Notre Dame coaching staff, Clements was an adjunct associate professor of law at the university’s law school, where he taught “Sports and the Law.” ...."

Manning has said he plans to return. Broncos have hired Gary Kubiak as HC and Wade Phillips as DC. Same two coaches he would have had in Houston had he signed with the Texans.

I actually think the willingness to recycle coaches shows both that the differences between them is small and that the Owners/GMs really don't have an exact idea of what makes a winning coach.
