View Full Version : Official Packers vs. Falcons Discussion Thread

Rodgers vs. Atlanta defense is a mismatch. Falcons are dead last in passing yards allowed. The one thing they do well is intercept passes, but Rodgers tends to negate that advantage. The Falcons have only 14 sacks, so Rodgers should have tons of time to throw.
Matt Ryan is having a pretty good year with 21 TD passes and 11 INT's. Julio Jones is healthy and had a monster game last week. They don't run the ball real well though, averaging 97 YPG. Steven Jackson is averaging 3.8 YPC.
Looks like a shootout game that the Packers should dominate.

I was just watching the men on NFL Access discuss the playoff Final scenario in the NFC.
I don't believe the Green Bay Packers need to be concerned about any team but themselves right now. The team has Atlanta at home MNF in Week 14 (My NO. 20th Ranked Team) then two consecutive weeks on the road Week 15 in Buffalo (Difficult.... My NO. 9 Ranked Team and on the road) and Week 16 in Tampa Bay (My NO. 32 Ranked team but it's on the road).
It's simply win Vs Atlanta and next up.
Finally in Week 17 we could get the very likely showdown game with the Detroit Lions.
Detroit has Tampa Bay and Minny in Weeks 14 and 15. Then their on the road to Chicago (Week 16) and at Packers in Week 17. This could be a huge game for not only the NFCN Title but the NO. 1 Seed in the NFC.
The charge for the NFCN and the #1 Seed in the NFC ensues this coming Monday night with the Atlanta Falcons in Lambeau Field. MM has to prepare his team the same way as he did for New England. We need to hope that the Packers can finish this game with a win and not get too banged up.
So next up is Atlanta and all chips have to be in. It's one game. One game at a time.

Trap game. Even though the Falcons can still win their miserable division, they know that they suck and will be playing as if they had nothing to lose. Packers are coming off an emotional win in their biggest game of the year, and will be drained. I expect to see a few uncharacteristic mistakes from ARod and a much closer than expected game. Hopefully it won't be a huge upset loss than ruins all of the team's good work in Oct and Nov.

I think this one will go well for the Packers. I'm a little nervous about Tampa Bay and a lot more nervous about Buffalo.

I'm inclined to agree with hoosier. Stubby had the players sky high for the Patriots, so Atlanta with its poor record coming into town where we think we're invincible is a recipe for an emotional let down and an upset.
This game will test Stubby's skill at getting his guys ready to play. As a Super Bowl favorite the Packers have a target on their back. Atlanta has something to prove and will be motivated.
Now is not the time for the Packers to take their foot off the gas pedal and coast.
I expect Stubby will find a way to get this message across.

Atlanta has a LOT to play for even with their lousy record. They have to keep winning to stave off the Saints for that pitiful division. But Atlanta isn't the same team on the road compared to at home so if we don't mess up with penalties and turnovers we should take care of business at Lambeau.

I don't think road has any bearing, it's all about sequencing. A trap game is any time a good team faces a bad opponent right before or right after a game against a quality opponent. Tampa would not qualify as a trap game because there is no distraction looming on the horizon.
According to this site, the concept doesn't bear out in actual games played. https://harvardsportsanalysis.wordpress.com/2012/11/22/debunking-the-trap-game-and-letdown-game-myths/

It's MM's job to ensure that the team is right minded after the possibly emotional win Vs New England. The next two game might be characterized as 'Trap Games'. The Packers should be OK at Home Vs Atlanta.
The next one on the road at Buffalo in Week 15 will be interesting. Buffalo has looked impressive the last two weeks. Their at Denver Broncos in Week 14. That will be a tough game and consideration has to be given to the result of that game for the matchup Vs the Packers @ Home in Week 15.

I don't think the Packers will take preparation lightly after Atlanta just toppled Arizona. The team also has plenty to work on after that Pats game, if anything I think their sense of urgency would be heightened. On the road this would be such a trap. It seems like home field advantage is going through a renaissance throughout the league this season. In Lambeau though this is not a trap. The Falcons are an inferior team, a warm weather dome team, coming to Lambeau and will be torn apart.
I also think its about time to start talking about the locker room effect of Peppers. http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcnorth/post/_/id/68687/julius-peppers-speech-fired-up-packers
In 1996 and in 2010 we had a guy like him, an old hall of famer without a ring. You can't match a sense of urgency like that and having him around as a hungry leader is big.
There's also the classic Mike McCarthy December running game to look forward to but this time Rodgers is also having a run away MVP season. This team isn't going to lose at home and certainly not to the Falcons.

I referenced the Peppers effect on the team a few weeks ago. There is no doubt he can bring an extra-hungry veteran dimension to the locker room. The guy is smart too. I read where he challenges Capers with tough questions. This team still has a major upside to it.

As for the game, yes, this is a game that is in a classic "let-down" spot. Sky high in game against the Pats, took high intensity, focus, etc.. Now facing a team with losing record, natural tendancy to not rise up to that same level.
Not that they'll need to in order to beat the Falcons, but it's a factor when handicapping this game.

Agree with this. Atlanta is coming off a good win against a 9-2 opponent. They put up 500 yards against that defense. The Packers are coming off a squeaker at home where they totally failed in the red zone. There's plenty to keep the Packers focused on this game. And if there is any hint of a let down, MM just need to say 'Did anybody get a ring for winning last Sunday? Did we clinch home field advantage for the playoffs? No, then we have a lot of work to do."

Here's three reasons [other than the trap game argument] why the Falcons are not going to be pushovers next Monday Night:
1. The Falcons record since their bye week is 3 wins and 1 loss. Two of these wins were away games at Tampa and Carolina. Besides the Cardinals, they beat Cleveland in Atlanta. In the game prior to their bye they lost to Detroit in Atlanta by 1 point. The point is the Falcons have been getting progressively better over the past several weeks.
2. Look at their depth chart. On offense they have talent at the skill positions: WR Julio Jones, Roddy White, Harry Douglas; RB Steven Jackson, Jacquizz Rodgers, Devonta Freeman; QB Matt Ryan; TE 6'8" 265 lbs. Levine Toiolo.
Jones, Douglas, Jackson and Ryan had big games vs the Cards. Toilolo had a TD catch. Jones had 189 yds and a TD on 10 catches. Jackson rushed 18 times for 101 yds. They controlled time of possession 37 minutes to 23! Roddy White was inactive but is expected to play against the Pack. (Atlanta's weakness seems to be their OL where two rookies and a 2nd year man are starting.)
[Atlanta is dead last in total defense and pass defense. Still, their secondary came up with 2 interceptions and a forced fumble last week.]
3. Devin Hester. He's back! I don't have to explain this one to Packer fans. Hester has gashed the Pack many times over his career and you can bet he'll be sky high next Monday Night in prime time. Even if he doesn't return a punt or a kick for a TD, he'll present a problem for the Pack in field position.
Do we try to kick deep on him in cold weather and risk a return? Do we squib it? Bloop it? Directional kick it and risk out of bounds? Will Stubby be tempted to onside kick?
Our Packers MUST stay focused for this game. It's no gimme.

Maxi, any given Sunday and all that, but the Cards O was gawdawful at ATL. I mean it was terrible. Hester did return a kick for a TD (that was wrongly called back due to a face mask by Hester after he scored), so he is still dangerous.

I watched a few Atlanta games this year because they televise them down here. They have had a bunch of injuries and play very inconsistent. Common denominators are Hester and Jones, who are always good, bonehead D and Ryan who can look like an elite QB one week and Duke Carlisle the next.

I was going to come and mention this. We beat the Patriots, but we didn't play perfectly by any means. The defense did well but had it's miserable moments with tackling. Rodgers in his radio show today touched on this in reverse as well. Rookies doing well and discovering talents and contributions no one expected pushes vets and provides another source of inspiration and hope. He mentioned Starks in the 2010 playoff campaign. And he thought the same thing might be in effect with Ha-Ha, Adams and Linsley and the vets like Peppers.

No.... It's prepare to win each game ..."one game at a time" and NOT looking further ahead than that weeks BIG game.
Putting any emphasis on this or that game being a trap game implies a lack of fan support for the real objective and that being a reality based faith.

We have to see MM prepare the Packers for each and every week through Week 17.

Buffalo has a nice defense but their offense isn't. Tampa? Please. Just because we've had problems in the past doesn't mean we're gonna tank there. Hold the phone. A third personnel man picked Atlanta, 20-17.

I see a lot about his very good arm, but each time I have watched him (probably a grand total of five times admittedly) I keep seeing wobbles on 40+ deep throws. Not saying he is bad at all, but I think that arm in overestimated in general and his WR make it hard to tease it out. Tramontana got him on a flutter ball short in the playoff game.

Something tells me Rodgers ain't gonna have as much time to pass Monday Night as he had last Sunday. Unlike Belicheat, Mike Smith is probably planning to blitz the farm:
Falcons finally find way to generate pressure, even with no sacks (http://espn.go.com/blog/atlanta-falcons/post/_/id/10444/falcons-finally-find-way-to-generate-pressure-even-with-no-sacks)
The Falcons didn't record a sack, but they put tremendous pressure on quarterback Drew Stanton (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/10487/drew-stanton). Defensive coordinator Mike Nolan was aggressive with his blitz packages, and defensive linemen Jonathan Babineaux (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/8473/jonathan-babineaux), Corey Peters (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/13292/corey-peters) and Cliff Matthews (http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/_/id/14182/cliff-matthews) stepped up with big defensive efforts while winning their battles at the line of scrimmage.
Smith pointed to third-down efficiency as the statistic most indicative of the defensive pressure applied. The Cardinals were 1-of-7 on third down.
"We went into the game wanting to put pressure on the quarterback, and I know the first thing you're going to say is, 'Well, Coach, you had no sacks.' But we hit and knock the quarterback down 11 times," Smith said Monday. "So we got accomplished what we needed to get accomplished. We forced three turnovers. There were two others that we felt like we possibly should have had in the ballgame. So we did a good job on third down.
"We had the quarterback feeling the pressure, and we took the ball away. And when you win the turnover battle and you win third downs on defense, you're going to have a pretty good day."

not a great arm. And watching the slow windup for the deep ball is painful - unless you want the Falcons to lose.
But he did have perfect placement to Julio against the Cards, so there's that to recommend him.

It was only a couple of seasons ago that Ryan was a MVP candidate in leading the Falcons to a 13-3 record.
Ryan doesn't throw the prettiest deep ball in the league, but he's not gonna miss open receivers by a mile, ala Sanchez and Bridgewater.
Hopefully, Sheilds gets cleared to play in this game. House is overrated. Hyde cannot be trusted. He's the Hawk of the DBs: Knows the D but is average at best. As I wrote in another post, the DBs need to bring their A-game.

Closer than you think?
Falcons at Packers
Monday, 8:30 p.m.
Line: Packers -13
It's hard to take this game seriously as a battle of first-place teams in the NFC, especially after Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel surveyed his inside sources and quoted NFL scouts and personnel experts stating that the Falcons winning the AFC South would be "a joke." "If Green Bay doesn't torch them for 40, I'll be shocked," one insider told McGinn. "Atlanta's secondary is as bad as Philadelphia's secondary," one source said. Hey, Cary Williams and Nate Allen have feelings too! You don't have to be mean by comparing them to Robert Alford and Dwight Lowery!
One scout thinks the Lambeau weather will make a difference. "I just think the Falcons have notoriously struggled outside."
Actually, while the Falcons have a semi-pronounced home-road split, they are 5-1 under Mike Smith in outdoor games when the kickoff temperature was below 45 degrees (courtesy Pro Football Reference's Boxscore Finder).
It makes you wonder what else the experts might have overlooked. William Moore has returned at safety, for example, to sure up that Falcons secondary. The Falcons still rank last in the NFL in Football Outsiders' defensive DVOA, but they have been creeping back toward the pack after early season embarrassments by the Vikings and Bears. Some of the youngsters are starting to figure things out.
Picking an upset here would be taking things too far, and the Vegas action suggests that the public agrees with the experts (the line moved nearly three points toward the Packers during the week). But if the Falcons climb to .500 because their young defense starts to gel and the Matt Ryan-Julio Jones combo spearheads a still-dangerous offense, that would be a sign of progress, not a "joke."
The Panthers making the playoffs? That would be a joke.
Prediction: Packers 34, Falcons 24

It's funny how the Atlanta "homers" (at ESPN, for example) disagree with McGinn's experts. The homers readily admit Atlanta's defense is not good. However, they consider their secondary pretty darn good, especially after Moore's return. They readily admit as well that their pass rush is a joke.

Actually, while the Falcons have a semi-pronounced home-road split, they are 5-1 under Mike Smith in outdoor games when the kickoff temperature was below 45 degrees (courtesy Pro Football Reference's Boxscore Finder).
And that would be last year's loss to Matt Flynn

Injury report (practice participation is an estimation)
Out – ILB Jamari Lattimore (did not participate, ankle), DL Luther Robinson (DNP, calf).
Questionable – CB Sam Shields (DNP, concussion).
Probable – DL Josh Boyd (limited, knee), DL Mike Daniels (limited, back), G T.J. Lang (limited, ankle), OLB Nick Perry (limited, shoulder), G Josh Sitton (limited, toe), OL Lane Taylor (full, probable).
On Sam Shields:
Sam Shields is obviously going through the protocol. The medical staff has told me he still has a chance to play. He'll be given the opportunity to play in the game if everything goes right.

Weather for this game is nearly identical to the Pats game. The Patriots these are not. Pack by three scores.

Packers young players picking up the slack. Notice, however, that the much derided 2012 draft class (Perry, Hayward, Daniels) has as many full time contributors as the more heralded 13 class (Lacy, Bach, Hyde, and Jones part-time probably breaks the tie). 2014 has 4 and 2011 has 2.

But more fun is now we know why Lawrence Guy found himself on the street after his second year.
No knuckleheads
Where those young guys are at right now is further toward maturity than many rookies who’ve come through the locker room in recent years. There’s an oft-told story from a few years ago when a major snowstorm hit the Green Bay metroplex and McCarthy dispatched staffers to pick up players who were unaccustomed to driving in snow. When a team representative contacted one young player on his cell phone that morning to offer door-to-door service to Lambeau Field for meetings and practice that day, the player sheepishly had to admit that he wasn’t at home – he was in the dorm room of a female UW-Green Bay student.

Sounds like something Hornung might have done, although somehow I doubt Lombardi sent staffers to pick up the players because it was snowing.

Atlanta Falcons to watch in tonight's MNF game :
QB Matt Ryan
Ryan plays much better at home, and in the frigid Lambeau Field he could struggle to produce.
RB Steven Jackson
Steven Jackson has scored a rushing touchdown in three of his last five games. He rushed for 101 yards last week against one of the league's toughest run defenses. Steven Jackson has been productive on MNF. He hopes to join LaDainian Tomlinson, Emmitt Smith and John Riggins as the only players in NFL history with a rushing touchdown in six straight games on Monday night.
WR Julio Jones
Jones has now scored in two straight games and had 10 receptions for 189 yards and a score last week. Julio Jones is a favourite target for Matt Ryan and has 11, 11, 13 and 12 targets in his last four games. If Roddy White can't suit up expect more of the same from the very talented Julio Jones. The Packers' secondary has been soft Vs the pass.
WR Roddy White
Roddy White has been out with an ankle injury yet he practiced on Saturday in a limited role and is listed as questionable for this game. If White isn't available or limited watch out for Harry Douglas who had 116 yards last week.
GO PACK GO !

I don't know if I'd say the Packers secondary has been soft against the pass... they're 6th in the league in passer rating against. That's pretty decent.

I stand down on the Packers and 'soft' against the pass. In a relative sense more than half the teams are 'in fact' softer.
My source has them Ranked 14th denverYooper.

Lies, damn lies and statistics, right?
I'd say I'm happy with the Packers pass D. IMO they have 4 starting caliber CBs on the roster in Williams, Shields, Hayward and House, not too many teams in the league can say that, the announcers were talking last night about both the Charger and Patriots having to use safeties to cover slot receivers. Even the TE position, which seems to always be an issue, hasn't burned them that badly this year despite playing against both NO and NE. Sure, both of those TEs got touchdowns, but they didn't rip the D all day long.
