Never in my life have I seen a team be so thoroughly out-coached. And these idiots in the media believe Mike Smith should be fired? Bullshit. His entire team is garbage, and he's hanging with us step-for-step!

How does this defense hold the Patriots down, make timely, big plays, hold the Flaycons to 7 in the first half and then totally shit the bed? This isn't rhetorical, I missed the entire second half.

WTF, over?

pittstang5

Not Pretty. Glad they won, I had my doubts. Falcons were rolling in the 2nd half.

The three dropped interceptions really hurt tonight. Gotta take the gifts from Matty when you get them. You know he'll throw a few your way every game. House, Guion, and Tramon all put two hands on passes that weren't caught. In Williams' case, the ball was not contested... Just a flat drop.

Understandable, but not acceptable that the Pack would take the foot off the gas pedal a bit, but what is unforgivable is not adjusting coverage to take Jones away. just absurd. house made some tremendous plays, but they should have shifted help. I would have liked to see Dix sneak up and blow Julio up at the line at least once. Crazy, stupid Capers. That's not going to cut it.

It seems so long ago I heard the announcers talking about the "much improved" Green Bay Packers defense. Turns out to be same -shit-different-day. They better pray Rodgers keeps playing lights-out the rest of the way because this defense ain't cuttin' the mustard.

5 Atlanta drives in 2nd half. 4 TDs, 1 FG

Road Runner, that's been the issue in these seasons of offensive glory and gaudy numbers. The Packers get to the playoffs and play the best defenses who can rush well enough with 4 and cover well enough with the rest, and when the offense gets contained, the defense has not carried the day, pretty much ever. Who knew that a 24 point lead at half almost wasn't enough?

The only good thing to come out of this is that they won, and that crappy second half defensive effort didn't lose the game for them. Atlanta ran out of time. Time to get in the film room and correct the many mistakes. The defense is capable of much better than that. For Atlanta having a patch-work offensive line, the Packer defense sure didn't move Ryan around very much. That didn't help the coverage team, who also had communication and coverage issues of their own.

This. Jones just humiliated the D...Capers kept throwing the kitchen sink at Matty and they never got there.

who also had communication and coverage issues of their own[/B].

I hear you Carolina, but this is game 13 and if that cluster hasn't been cleared up by now, I've lost all hope it's going to magically get straightened out in the next 3 games. From what I watched, the only 2 threats Atl had tonight were Matty and Julio. Either the rush has to get to Ryan or rotate help towards Jones. Clinton-Dix was always late getting to Jones most of the night.

when a hurry-up offense gets in rhythm, the pass rush will tire as the game goes on

Atlanta had to operate on a 4 down territory mentality in the second half, especially since the Packers offense kept moving the target they needed to get to.

It doesn't let the defense off of the hook for their lull, or their lack of coverage on Jones, but it changes the playcalling enough to make it more difficult on the D.

I suppose if ATL ever had a fourth down, or even a third down, your view would make more sense.

Anyone else think Shields should not have played. He didn't practice all week and clearly looked lost. He had one nice play - a block on the Burnett INT.

Shields should have stayed in the locker room at half time.

Yeah, those 4th down conversions were hard to watch. I kept thinking this would be a good time for one stop, but nope.

Answer:

A mess of things. A defense with heads spinning. A defense gassed....worn down by extreme offensive weapons on the Atlanta side.

They were 3/3 on 4th down.

They were 3/3 on 4th down.

I knew they were perfect on 4th down, but it seemed like they went for it on more 4th downs than just 3.

Seemed like the Packer Defense did pretty good on 1st and 2nd down, then shit the bed on 3rd and/or 4th down.

mraynrand

They were 3/3 on 4th down.

I know. But the point was that they weren't having to run a ton of fourth down plays. They were getting chunks of yardage almost at will.

Yeah, I know. I was speaking more to their mentality.

It reminded me of the latter half of 2011, when the Packers would build a lead and wind up in a shootout... Chargers game and in-season Giants game come to mind.

Packers held them to a reasonable 5 of 11 on 3rd down. But Falcons were 3 of 3 on fourth down, which makes that 8 possible drives sustained.

my comment wasn't meant to relay factual information. The 3-3 on fourth down just illustrates the futility of the defense in stopping anything, like all the other plays in the second half.

I am actually surprised more teams, esp. New England, don't try fourth down more against this D.

Ah, but if they fail on the 4th down conversion, then you give Rodgers a shorter field. Given how he's been this year, that's a recipe for getting lambasted by the media (and your owner) if it doesn't work out. Atlanta had to as they had no choice, but the stakes are pretty high in the playoffs and a misstep like this can get a coach on the hot seat and quickly get your team down by a big margin vs a high powered offense.

Just like with any playcalling, if it works it was a genius and obvious call, if not the coach was stupid to even try.
