Good #Packers injury news: WR Jordy Nelson (hip), CB Casey Hayward (foot) and OLB Nick Perry (shoulder) aren't on PUP/NFI lists. Good to go.

That's the good news.

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 12m12 minutes ago
Only three #Packers were put on PUP: WR Ricky Collins, RB John Crockett, LB Mike Neal. Means they failed their physicals.

Jason Wilde ‏@jasonjwilde 12m12 minutes ago
#NFL transaction wire does not specify injuries. Crockett hurt his ankle at end of OTAs/minicamp. Neal did not practice all offseason.

Tom Silverstein ‏@TomSilverstein 14m14 minutes ago
The #Packers have put rookie CB Quentin Rollins on the reserve / non-football injury list, according to NFL transactions.

All the surgery guys: Jordy Nelson, Abbrederis, Barclay, Mulumba, Boyd as well as CB Casey Hayward did pass their physicals.

If Rollins is on the reserve/nfi list, does that mean he didn't even attempt a physical? And what heppened to him?

Clarification on Rollins: Non-football injury generally is for guys hurt training on their own since minicamp. Guion & Worthy last year.

Didn't pass physical but the injury occurred while on his own, usually that is while they are working out. Unless it was the July 4th weekend.

What's going on with Neal??

He didn't practice all off season and someone posted earlier it might be related to an injury he had during last season.

Bit odd because Nelson and Perry both had surgery and are good to go.

What's going on with Neal??

Recovering from off-season hernia surgery. (http://www.jsonline.com/sports/pack...ming-at-high-level-b99547157z1-319733661.html)

Perry (shoulder) and Neal (hernia) missed the off-season after undergoing post-season surgery.
I'm no doctor but I believe the surgery is typically performed to prevent recurring hernias so hopefully that's one injury he can get past with no problems.

PLAYERS SHOULD GO BACK TO BEING SLOUCHES IN THE OFFSEASON

While McCarthy seldom shares why a player is absent from practice, when the coach has used the phrase he used Wednesday about TE Andrew Quarless – that he was gone for “a positive personal situation” – that has historically meant the birth of a child. That’s why it was disconcerting to hear McCarthy’s tone and word choice change so dramatically 24 hours later, after Quarless was absent from the first practice of camp.

“I do not have a feel for when he will be back. He’s dealing with a very difficult, extremely difficult family situation right now,” McCarthy said. “So he’s with his family and he’ll be gone as long as he needs to be.”

Hope this isn't as bad as it sounds.

Again? This football thing isn't gonna work out. Injury settlement time.

http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/320291621.html

News of the concussion, however, brings into focus a problem explored by front office personnel at the NFL scouting combine in 2014. Executives in personnel from four teams told the Journal Sentinel at the time about what they believed to be a history of concussions for Abbrederis.

Two scouts told the newspaper Abbrederis had suffered "three or four" concussions.

"I've heard it's three or four," a personnel director for an NFL team said at the combine in 2014. "I've got to find out the depth of it. I love him, but it makes me nervous."

At the time, Abbrederis insisted he had suffered just a single concussion in September of 2012 against Oregon State. "And it wasn't even a bad one," he said at the combine.

But Abberderis also suffered head injuries on two other occassions during his collegiate career: The first came against Penn State in November of 2012, and the second against Northwestern in October of 2013.

Wilde: But when they were in nickel, Matthews was outside and rookie ILB Jake Ryan got the call next to Sam Barrington.

So the nickel was a 2-4, with a slow ILB (Barrington), and a moderately slow rookie ILB (Ryan) on the field??

How far behind Lynch was Barrington on that wheel route that went for a big gainer in the NFCCG??

pbmax
08-01-2015, 08:46 AM
It's only the hand in the dirt that matters. DL means down lineman, even if Perry is positionally playing the DE everyone thinks he should be playing.

However, Ryan only recently moved inside from outside. He might be a more natural pass defender than Barrington. I guess we'll see.

It isn't a 3-3 if you only have 2 DL inside the tackles - and that's the biggest problem with it, i.e. teams tend to run it down our throat. Aren't you absolutely sick and tired of being run over out of that alignment?? Besides, most of our front 6/7 talent resides on the DL - I'd much rather have Perry down, and Neal on the field than Perry lined up outside the tackles and 2 sluggish ILB's who are liabilities against the pass, and undermanned against the run with only 2 DL in front of them.

The way dunderdummy runs his 2-4, he all-but abandons the middle of the field, leaving 2 down linemen and 2 LB's on the 2nd level to deal with anything between the tackles. The OLB's in that alignment, unless they are running a stunt, usually fly upfield on the pass rush, and take themselves out of any running play.

It's the same old story with dunderdummy - trying to hedge his bets against the run (which he really is not), while in reality he's only concerned about the pass, and he usually doesn't defend that well either.

Early thoughts on TC:

Blanchard is the 2nd best QB on the squad.

Ty Montgomery is the #4 wide receiver. Early favorite for TT's steal of the year in draft.

Palmer is ahead of Bradford and Ryan at ILB.

Bad news: Sitton's toe not 100%. Good news: He's a guy who can play well without practicing much.

Packers depth at WR as good as it's ever been.

With Mulumba back, depth at OLB very impressive, even without Matthews.

It isn't a 3-3 if you only have 2 DL inside the tackles - and that's the biggest problem with it, i.e. teams tend to run it down our throat. Aren't you absolutely sick and tired of being run over out of that alignment??

Not if it's 3rd and 15, or even second and long against a good quarterback.

He did opt out of surgery, and seems to be willing to risk that it will continue to be a problem this year, rather than have the surgery.

http://www.pnj.com/story/sports/nfl/2015/07/02/sitton-hopes-healthy-season-green-bay/29645701/

I think it is a concern that he is being held out of so much right from the start. If it is just "being smart" as they like to say, I would think they would have him start out with the line to get things going, then maybe sit out a few days, and be limited thereafter. By not having him at the beginning, the O-line will not "start" as a unit until he does participate.

Could it be that he is being held out now because he did have the surgery at some point this summer???
Maybe when he realized it would not heal on its own?

Not to mention the 270 pound guy who should be a DE who is on the outside shoulder of the Tackle (or his 280 lb sub who used to play DT) plus the 265 pound guy just inside the TE. That's just soft with their hands in the air and whatnot.

That's also why wist doesn't like a 4-3 Under. Only two big guys between the tackles.

ayn, how many times have we seen an opponent run for a 1st down against dunderdummy when he abandons the middle of the field and goes to a 2-4 with the G-C-G completely uncovered??

As for the 3-3 vs the 2-4, I'm much rather rush out of a 3-3 anyway - the offensive linemen have to account for the DL, instead of just looking to pick up a guy coming from the second level - which is easy enough to do when there is nothing in front of you, and you can see the guy coming a mile away.

The 3-3 is a much better front for the personnel we have. It's really not even debatable IMO - but we have dunderdummy for our DC, and all of you guys are starry eyed groupies, so I'm stuck with having to argue something that should be obvious.

It depends on the down and distance, and the QB. Packers played the 2-4 extensively on passing and QB run plays versus guys like Kap and other QBs with running chops - but only on passing downs, longer to gain than 10 yard downs and sometimes first downs, depending on field position. It's a trade-off of course. But SPH and Trgo both told me that essentially nickel is base and they are willing to give up runs to stop the passing game. Again, that will of course vary based on the skill of the opposing QB and their team's ability to run the ball, esp. versus a nickel. Also, Packers and SPH value the ability of their guys to adapt, so even if they have undersized guys for pass defense, they still expect to be able to limit the run damage.

I agree, every once in a while the defense is set up to allow a run, and it can look foolish close to the goal line, but that's not all that frequent, and EVEN IN those cases, the opposition typically has 3-4 receiving threats on the field (think 2013 season finale agains Chicago with Marshall Jeffrey, the TE and Forte all on the field, all threats to burn you in the passing game. You just can't bring in three fatties to defend that).

1) Dunderdummy ran the 2-4 as his base, regardless of down/distance, and regardless of personnel, some 75-80% of the time in 2011. He scaled it back a little in '12 and '13, but that isn't saying much; and then of course MM finally had enough, and got involved with the defense; the Elephant became our base; and we saw a lot more 3-3, and less 2-4. With clearly better results.

2) Dunderdummy played the 2-4 in short yardage and goal line often times. He played it inside the 10 yd line with goal to go. There's just no excuse for that.

3) We no longer have "the fat guys" to run a traditional 3-4, hence we have to run the Elephant/hybrid in base - which is fine with me given our personnel.

4) Given our personnel, the same arguments apply to the nickel, i.e. we should be running a 3-3, so Perry can have his hand in the dirt; Neal is standing up rushing; Matthews is in the middle and presents all kinds of problems for the OL and the calls they have to make; Peppers, Daniels, and Jones round out that alignment.

Notice in that alignment, we don't have to have either Barrington or Ryan on the field - either of whom would be a weak link in the nickel; or, in yesteryear, Hawk or B. Jones.

5) If it is as likely as not to be a run, you can go with Richardson are your nickelback; if it is more likely to be a pass, go with one of the midgets.

Q: Haven't heard anything about Richardson in this camp - is he hurt?? Is he running in any of the subpackages??

Well, for sure and for certain he has ball skills - no one is doubting that; but if he doesn't get the pick, how many TD's is he going to allow b/c he can't tackle Shirley Temple??

That's the story of the Packer D under dunderdummy - it's turnovers or bust. Way too much of the time it's bust.

"1) Dunderdummy ran the 2-4 as his base"

I don't think the Packer defensive coaches thinks of "2-4" the way you do, especially with Perry on the field.

"2) Dunderdummy played the 2-4 in short yardage and goal line often times. He played it inside the 10 yd line with goal to go. There's just no excuse for that."

Yes there is an excuse (reason), but you disagree with it.

"3) We no longer have "the fat guys" to run a traditional 3-4, hence we have to run the Elephant/hybrid in base - which is fine with me given our personnel."

I totally agree. Some of this was just out of the Packers hands or alternatively (or at the same time), they did an ineffective job replacing Pickett, Jolly, and coaching Raji.

"4) Given our personnel, the same arguments apply to the nickel, i.e. we should be running a 3-3, so Perry can have his hand in the dirt;"

This is what the coaches believe they are doing

"5) If it is as likely as not to be a run, you can go with Richardson are your nickelback; if it is more likely to be a pass, go with one of the midgets.

Q: Haven't heard anything about Richardson in this camp - is he hurt?? Is he running in any of the sub packages??"

They liked Hyde then Rollins. Richardson is a third option, but is the second with Rollins on injured list.

I think they did just fine replacing Pickett and Jolly last year. Losing Raji hurt the depth at nose. But Guion, Daniels and Boyd played major minutes in base and did just fine, especially after Matthews moved inside.

Nick Perry with his hand in the dirt is the exact same guy. Even Wade Phillips agrees.

I think you mean 'replace' differently than I did. The team effectively 'replaced' them in that they made the defense work, but Daniels isn't the same kind of player as either Jolly or Pickett, and Guion and Boyd were just OK. But yeah, they were probably as good as Pickett and Jolly in their last year in GB, but that's not saying a lot.

It isn't that Perry is the same guy or not - it's that he is a down lineman with different responsibilities that allows for Neal to be on the field on that side, and Matthews in the middle. That alignment will be more stout against the run, and provide many more rush options if it is a pass - plus, you can run/blitz more easily out of that.

If Perry is an OLB, Matthews can still line up in the middle, but then you'll have Barrington on the field, no?? Barrington stepped up his game a great deal last year, but he is still a 4.92, 40 guy, and always will be. Marshawn Lynch leaving him in the dust for an easy 30 yd gain when the wheels started coming off in the NFCC Game should be a lasting reminder of why you don't want Barrington in the nickel.

We don't have anyone that can 2-Gap anymore. I don't even think Pennel can 2-Gap. Raji certainly can't, and never could; so, of course their roles have to be different.

If you put Daniels in there and expect him to hold up against a double team?? Forget it, of course he'll get run over... which is one of the reasons you don't want to run a 2-4 with the personnel we have.

If you have 3 down linemen inside the tackles - everyone can look to penetrate and control their single gap, and defending the run becomes a much more doable proposition while in the nickel.

There are a lot of moving parts in this comparison. I meant replace, as in, were able to field a competitive defense with some resistance to the run (meaning, better than 2011 or 2013) on the defensive line.

While Raji of 2010 was not truly replaced, I think they had enough big bodies that the "base" 3-4 was fine Daniels-Guion-Boyd.

They do have more penetrators now than before, so short yardage can look a little different now with Peppers, Neal and Jones. However, if Raji is healthy and Pennel somehow makes the team, 3-4 or jumbo 4-4 won't be a problem either.

We'd have to look at the starting roster to be sure, but I think the elephant position, basically Neal, has allowed them to essentially add one fat guy. Neal counts as an OLB and nickel rusher. The last guy in is likely beefier.

Of course I made this same argument when we did have guys that could 2-gap - always hated the Jumbo 2-4. Got away with that alignment some of the time, but eventually opponents realized it would always be static, and it became very predictable where every one would be; hence, much easier to block for the run, and b/c we have 2 non-pass rushers on the DL, we couldn't generate any pressure against the pass either.

The Jumbo 2-4 should have been scrapped long before MM had to step in and put a stop to the madness.

Did M3 stop it or was Pickett not re-signed?

Scout.com leader in the clubhouse for the eighth O lineman spot.

So far, guard Lane Taylor has stated his case while taking a lot of Josh Sitton’s reps the past three practices. It’s only one element but it’s worth noting that Taylor is 7-0 in the daily one-on-one pass-blocking drills. He hasn’t faced a murderer’s row of defensive linemen, but the first of his three wins on Monday came against Mike Daniels — easily the defense’s best one-on-one rusher.

The 2-4 was mind numbingly ineffective whether Pickett was in there or not - whether it was a Jumbo 2-4, or a straight-up pass rush 2-4, it was an ineffective lineup regardless.

So if dunderdummy soldiered thru multiple seasons of obvious ineffectiveness with the alignment, regardless of personnel, why would he stop simply b/c Pickett was gone?? The only time the alignment was effective was in the SB season when dunderdummy had Jenkins, Bishop, Collins, and Woodson roaming all over the place to make it work.

After Jenkins left, that alignment should have been a goner, but of course dunderdummy rode it to infamy and an NFL record for pass defense futility, and the 3rd worst overall defensive performance in league history.

If those realities were not enough to rattle dunderdummy into doing something else, why would the single loss of an aging NT/DT who at the end of the line dissuade him from running it?? MM said he was going to get more involved in the defense, and from the outset of the 2014 season, the 2-4 was rarely seen; and when dunderdummy did run it?? it was every bit as ineffective as it had been before.

LaDarius Gunter pretty good. Hey Wist! A physical corner!:glug:

Would be interesting if that was the case, I think he was penciled in at the #5WR/ST specialist. That would make two of last year's picks somewhat of a waste.

Well, I have my doubts that Abby can stay healthy enough to make the team. I don't think it's surprising that Montgomery would be ahead of Janis. You're talking about a 3rd round pick out of Stanford vs. a 7th round pick out of Saginaw Valley State.

Has anyone heard or read anything about Davante Adams? I've read dozens of articles since TC started and haven't seen him mentioned once. Alot of praise is going to Montgomery - which is good, but how is Adams doing? He had a great 2nd half of the year and I was hoping he'd be even better this year. Maybe no news is good news?

He was being labelled as the All star of OTA's or something, but since then I've heard/read nothing beyond a couple of generic "Jordy, Cobb and Adams"-style WR articles. You'd think there would be some mention of him. Right now Montgomery is the new guy so he's getting all the attention...I haven't heard too much about Cobb or Nelson either.

This is the fun part of camp - watching to see which rookies make plays, and which second or even third year guys make the jump.

Mulumba, Jayrone Elliot, and Gunter get lots of mentions so far on defense. Adrian Hubbard - crickets. Dmitri Goodson - destined to be the next Jarrett Bush (as in ST ace and nominal position player).

Datone Jones - more crickets.

Datone Jones has gotten his mention! But, you have to read the FG kicking part to see it. One of Crosby's misses on Monday was a blocked attempt by Jones. I know, not exactly the primary area we want to see him excel in, but maybe its a start!.

I think this is what makes Barrington an NFL starter. He seems like the type of young guy that old guys respect. Something about having a mean SOB playing behind you that gets lineman known to take plays off to give their all. Like perhaps Ngata only became Ngata because he had Ray Lewis standing behind him.

Anyone remember details of the Packers getting into GPS tracking and other newer measures of athlete performance and fitness?

Because they have used some of the same stuff Chip Kelly is doing in Philly but I specifically recall them collecting data on GPS and the players for some time. Which leads me to this:

“Our biggest competition is the status quo: the inability of old-school coaches to move beyond doing what they’ve always done,” said Gary McCoy, director of sports science at Catapult. “Change is frightening, especially in a sport like pro football.”

Hiring Australian-educated trainers and buying fancy equipment won’t do much good if coaches and players are reluctant to put theory and data into practice. McCoy mentioned one NFL client that has been highly receptive to sports science but collected three years of data before they began applying it.

In the early going, Adrian Hubbard's only been mentioned for being hurt. He better get better and show something or he'll get left in the dust. Well, okay, maybe not until after he's had a chance in the exhibition games.

I love Janis's potential, but it's hard not to root for Myles "Standish" White. I read somewhere, in answer to someone's question about him getting any stronger, that he's gained (I think) 18 pounds the last two years.

I'm wondering if Jayrone Elliot is showing anything yet. Or maybe he's waiting for the exhibition games to start.

I wonder, too, if that young QB - Blanchard, is it? - is going to make life tough for TT and Mikey-Mike. What do they do if they see a real pro QB in him, far closer to being ready than Hundley, who surely would be snatched up if they try to sneak him onto the PS? Maybe Casey Hayward can loan one of them his hamstrings so one of them can be put on injured reserve.

Ah, Hayward. I have a feeling - just a feeling, but his history supports it - that he's never going to truly develop into a reliable starter. Guy gets hurt more often than a sensitive seventh grade girl on her first period. Not his fault, I know, but it must give the coaches pause. Joe Whitt better be giving those rooks and Goodson a crash course. Someone's going to have to emerge from that group as an outside starter.

Don't forget that Shields has never been available for 16 games in a season yet, to. He can be expected to miss at least two. CBs #3, #4 & #5 have to be ready to play.

Bill Huber at Scout.com says Randall in the lead for dime back job.

Randall has made a play or two at every practice to vault ahead of second-round pick Quinten Rollins, who had a strong offseason but missed the first three practices of training camp due to his hamstring. Randall has joined Shields, Hayward and Hyde in the dime.

Should also note Randall has played both outside spots. Rollins hasn't yet, he's been inside at slot CB.

Until Wednesday, when he made good plays several times, Monty was outplaying Adams in early camp practices.

http://www.greenbaypressgazette.com/story/sports/nfl/packers/2015/08/04/insider-thumbs-mulumba-adams/31139049/

Part of the perception probably is skewed by expectations, but it’s hard not to conclude that third-round draft pick Ty Montgomery has been the better playmaker early in camp. And one play involving Adams on Tuesday was a little jarring: cornerback Sam Shields’ leaping interception of a Rodgers throw on a go route.

Shields made an exceptional play, but one of Adams’ assets is his physical strength going after those kind of throws. On that play, he didn’t attack the ball like you’d expect and thus never had a shot at the catch or at least pass breakup.

Also, Lane Taylor, who looked barely replacement level last year at times, has had a very good camp.

■ Lane Taylor, the No. 1 backup at left guard, lost his first one-on-one rep of camp when Mike Daniels beat him on their first rep. Taylor was 7-0 going into Tuesday. He won his other one-on-one snap of the day, against rookie Lavon Hooks.

I'm sure Rollin's primary role, ideally anyway, is backup slot to Hyde. And that's probably where he gets his first reps in preseason. But later in the game he will get his shot outside

Question is this: if Shields, Hayward and Hyde are healthy, does Randall have a role? They seem to be grooming him for a lot of ST work.

Rollins actually has a straighter line to Game Day reps on Defense.

On this team? Just wait a few seconds. Shields and Hyde get injured on every other play - almost as often as Terry Glenn. Randall will play on the outside in the dime (which probably means a decent amount of time) and in relief.

I do like that the top pick AND a UDFA (Gunner/Gunter) seem to be stepping up and that there is still time for Rollins to come through as he missed very little camp. Makes the DB depth chart seem less shaky right now.

Nelson has another perspective on AR's interceptions:

Just as Rodgers’ decisions may be different in camp than they would be in a real game, so might the receivers’ actions, according to veteran Jordy Nelson. He explained that a 50-50 ball in camp can put a receiver in a tough spot, because he’s always going to try to make the catch no matter what, whereas in a game, a receiver in a disadvantageous position might break up the pass and make sure it’s not picked off.

Right now, in early August, no one is going to give up the chance to shine, especially when on the field with the two-time MVP.

At this point I don't care about the 49ers (they've taken enough hits to remove them from the dangerous list) but Smith clearly has a problem if this charge is legit.

Bobbo's Friday Practice Report http://www.jsonline.com/sports/packers/training-camp-report-friday-at-a-glance-b99552506z1-321110841.html

Rajion Neal has been impressing with the extra reps coming with Crockett's absence and Lacy getting some rest with his sore foot. He has impressed Edgar Bennett who said he was "flashing" some nice ability. The former college WR lost Jake Ryan with a hesitation move during the practice.

For everyone panicking about the lack of mentions of Ha-Ha Clinton Dix, Bob reports that he and 2 other safeties went 1 on 1 versus the vaunted Packer WR corp on Friday. Jordy got the best of Sean Richardson outside and deep, but the starting safeties were able to thwart Cobb (HHCD) and Janis (Burnett). As a result of the trouble the WRs had with press coverage, he declares the WR worthy of the dreaded thumb down award. Burnett said the goal of the drill for the safeties was to tie up faster WRs at the line.

Quinten Rollins Band: WR Javess Blue, a rookie free agent, had impressed as a clever route runner. Then, on Friday, he really hurt himself by dropping a well-thrown corner route of about 20 yards from Brett Hundley in the end-zone corner behind Quinten Rollins.

Nelson Works Smarter Than Thou: On Thursday, Nelson spent a 2-minute musical interlude having Mike Trgovac, the defensive line coach, demonstrate how the D-linemen had just finished a drill in which they slipped by a dummy. Obviously, Nelson saw value in wide receivers trying it.

Worrying Note to Watch:

Casey Hayward: Hayward hasn’t necessarily been a disappointment in the traditional sense as he has been a solid player in camp, but for a guy who was ranked so high by the analytics community and is looking for an extension, he has been off and on. He has shown flashes of the big play ability that makes him so exciting, but he has struggled in press coverage and with recovery. He will be a good player this season, but I expect more from a guy that talented.

Not sure how Linsley can exceed expectations. Any improvement to his technique at all, and he's going to be a perenial pro-bowler. The only NFC center in his class is Frederick in Dallas. Tretter likely got himself Wally Pipp'd, he ain't getting back on the field.

Oh - and from the previous post - just what is a 'clever' route runner? I'm sure I don't know what that could mean.

I imagine its someone who can sell the fake move before the real move. Precise routes would mean not only are you where you are supposed to be when you are supposed to be there, but that you have also lost, or kept at bay, the defender. You can either out-technique him (Jennings) or outsmart/juke them (clever WR).

Just a guess though.

In general, I think the League also discourages speculation about what exact injury a player may have suffered. Happens on TV all the time as announcers try to stifle reaching a conclusion about the nature of the injury when it looks obvious on TV. They are wrong often enough I think in general its a good idea. Not sure why, in this particular case Wilde thought that was wise.

So who is the surprise of camp so far?

Probably this guy:

http://www.packersnews.com/story/sports/2015/08/11/insider-thumbs-walker-thompson/31508141/

Thumbs Up
Josh Walker entered training camp as one of those relatively unknown offensive linemen scrapping with a handful of other relatively unknown players for maybe the final spot on the 53-man roster. Through nearly two weeks of camp, though, Walker has been as good as any of the Packers’ backup offensive linemen, and that includes Don Barclay, JC Tretter and Lane Taylor. Walker is legitimately in the battle for one of the eight or nine spots likely to go to offensive linemen. Walker, who spent most of last season on the Packers’ practice squad, is at 328 pounds the heaviest of the offensive linemen. He’s worked all camp as the right guard with the No. 2 offensive line and held up well. He’s also stood out in one-on-one drills, where his record is a stellar 15-2. Those numbers tell only part of the story — Walker often is working against lower depth chart defensive linemen such as Khyri Thornton and rookie Christian Ringo, rather than starters such as B.J. Raji and Mike Daniels. But in Tuesday’s practice, Walker’s 3-0 record in one-on-ones included wins over Datone Jones (twice) and Josh Boyd, who were regular rotational players last season. Walker’s next step is to carry over his play into the preseason games, starting Thursday night at New England. He’s a player to keep an eye on, because through two weeks of practice he’s given himself a legitimate shot at making the final roster.

Probably this guy:

This is exciting for a couple reasons. First, it looks like we have a good guard backup for the immediate season. Second, we may have a potential replacement for Sitton in three years. Sitton is currently signed through the 2016 season. 2017 he will be a UFA assuming nothing is done between now and then. Sitton will be 31 years old at that time. Josh Walker will be 26 years old and entering his prime. He's a possible.

The Packers seem to putting pieces in place to have continuous success. It's fun to watch. I'm sure it's not easy to do.

http://www.jsonline.com/sports/packers/packers-rookie-quinten-rollins-impressive-against-patriots-b99557152z1-321944271.html

Look at the way he covered Thursday night.

On a back-shoulder fade 15 yards downfield, Rollins was in perfect position and knew just when to reach and break it up.

On two take-off routes, he tracked the ball just the way all the scouts said he did at Miami, turned back at the right time and came within an eyelash of intercepting both passes.

When running back James White moved into the flat, Rollins broke up quickly from zone coverage and laid out the former Wisconsin Badger with a wicked cross-body block to force an incompletion.

On a bubble screen, he saw it instantly, sifted through interference and helped limit the gain to 1 yard with a low, knifing, aggressive force.

Rollins wasn't the least bit intimidated in New England, just like he hasn't been in facing Nelson, Cobb and Adams at Nitschke Field.

He understands where the ball is headed and where he should be positioned to make a play on it.

He plays more athletically and with more speed than he tested last spring.

He has terrific hands, more than adequate size and a physical and mental toughness that should bode well for his future.

This is Wilde doing a terrible job of helping Rodgers take a shot at Russell Wilson (without naming Wilson) on behalf of his buddy Matt Flynn.

Unlike some other quarterbacks – ones who shall remain nameless here – Rodgers isn’t one of those guys who works hard for show, or will tell you in great detail about how he’s the first one in the building and last to leave every day. Much like his position on sharing his religious beliefs (he espouses the St. Francis of Assisi approach to spreading the Gospel), Rodgers doesn’t want to hear about how hard you work. He wants to see it.

The article is about how Tolzien has earned everyone's trust (except Bretsky's) as the #2 QB.

McGinn drinking the Quinten Rollins Kool-Aid. I agree with him. He was my favorite pick of this year's draft.

Same article on Barclay:

The assumption would be that Barclay will start improving soon. Still, the Packers have to be worried.

It was noteworthy that Josh Walker, who played 35 snaps at right guard, was reinserted at right tackle for the 10-play final series after rookie Fabbians Ebbele struggled there in one series following Barclay's departure.

Walker, a bulky power player, moved into contention to become the No. 3 guard with a strong performance (one pressure, one "bad" run). The Patriots were playing the dregs by the time Walker shifted to right tackle, but he didn't have a glaring bad play there.

Walker's scouting report from 2014 sounds like he's strictly a Guard though. If Barclay continues to struggle, there is still the question of who is the backup RT.

http://www.draftinsider.net/reports/2014/G/Josh-Walker

Positive: Three-year starter awarded all-conference honors as a senior. Strong, stout offensive lineman best in a small area. Quick into blocks, stays square, and explosive at the point of attack. Plays with a nasty attitude, jolts defenders with good hand punch, and turns them from the line. Effective run blocker and opens up the lanes.

Negative: Marginally athletic and ineffective blocking in motion. Does not show great footwork in space.

Analysis: Walker is a size prospect offering potential in a run-oriented system.

Barclay's report IMHO suggests he has a little more ability as an OT but is not as powerful a run blocker as Walker. http://www.draftinsider.net/reports/2012/G/Don-Barclay

i have seen any practices , but based on his performance in that game, it appears Barclay is going to need another year to get back to where he was before the ACL. He was brutal. I agree that back-up tackle looks like a huge concern right now. Hopefully someone steps up.

With reps, time to prepare, and some help - along with Rodgers being able to see pressure from that side and his mobility in the pocket, I think they could compensate.

Lang could move out too but that creates musical chairs along the line which you'd obviously prefer to avoid if possible.

Barclay was serviceable in pass pro when he was 100%. Anything less than that is a problem.

Actually, I'm wondering if the knee was the reason for his sub-par performance. If that's the case, what he needs is rest/rehab, not work. He's a veteran. He probably doesn't need to play in every pre-season game to be ready for the season.

Most beat writers skipped practice to write about the Packer Development called Titletown Development Park and Brew Pub. Will house a Kohler Resort Hotel (some rooms under $200/night not on game weekends) promising to be a 4 star hotel (2nd round pick - you won't catch Al Michaels dead there), Hinterland Brewery and a Bellin Sports Clinic for Matthews, Neal and Perry.

They might also add a trampoline park and bowling. But even if they don't, Murphy promises families will always be able to afford the outdoor plaza. The pictures of the plaza set in winter include an ice-skating rink, however no final decisions about what the plaza will include have been made. Murphy promises the public will be involved with plans because they plan to use focus groups. I wonder if Murphy actually thinks a focus group is the same as asking for public input.

Red Zone woes

Thumbs down

Almost all the Packers’ 11-on-11 work starting last week through the end of camp has one side of the ball running scout team of the upcoming opponent. For instance, when the offense is going against scout team defense, it’s usually facing second-and-third stringers running somebody else’s scheme.

So it jumps out when the scout team outperforms the other side of the ball in a practice period. And on Thursday, that happened when the Packers’ offense failed to get in the end zone against the scout-team defense on several plays during a spirited red-zone period.

On one play from the 5, Rodgers and Davante Adams failed to connect on a short out pattern. Two plays later, on a two-point conversion attempt, tight end Andrew Quarless dropped a throw that was on the money. And on the play after that, another two-point try, Rodgers’ short throw to running back Eddie Lacy at the goal line was broken up by inside linebacker Carl Bradford.

Later, the scout-team defense stuffed the No. 3 offense on three straight running plays. On the first, halfback John Crockett fumbled on a run from the 5. The other two were from the 2. Defensive lineman Bruce Gaston broke through and dropped Alonzo Harris for a one-yard loss on one, and several defenders engulfed Harris at the line on the other.

Defensive players celebrated like they’d won a game. Good for them. Not so good for an offense working against the scout team.

Red Zone woes

They need a 6'5" or taller TE for the Red Zone, if anything just to be a decoy so someone else can get open. I wanted them to either draft or sign a Tall TE just for this reason, but no one listens to me.

They need to try and use Peppers again in these situations. It almost worked last time, then it was scrapped.

Morgan Burnett missed practice this week, but not for injury, he was excused for personal reasons.

Extra points

-Cornerbacks coach Joe Whitt had only a few hours to get Ryan White ready to play after the defensive back re-signed with the Packers prior to last Thursday’s preseason game against New England.

White, who went to camp with the Packers last summer, ended up playing 10 snaps against the Patriots because of injuries in the secondary.

“I think Ryan graduated with like a 4.0. He’s really smart,” Whitt said. “I didn’t meet with him until the day of the game that morning and we just went through some recall things. … He’s smart. He understands the nickel and the dime. I thought he went in the game and did a really nice job, especially with just one meeting.”

-Rookie defensive lineman Christian Ringo continued his best week of camp on Thursday, picking up wins over offensive linemen Garth Gerhart and Vince Kowalski during one-on-one drills.

The sixth-round pick out of Louisiana-Lafayette also nearly picked off Rodgers on a screen pass when he was working on the defensive scout team later during a red-zone period.

“That’s a d-lineman’s dream to get an interception or fumble. I let that one pass me by,” Ringo laughed. “When I get into a rhythm like that, I can mix it up like that. I had a good rhythm going that day. I’m just going to try to continue to keep it going. Hopefully carry it over to Sunday.”

New punter Jake Schum said Bucs called day after Jets cut him last week. Also worked out for Packers on Friday. Three-way battle now ...

Maybe the other punter WAS a schmuck. Though this guy may have simply been in to update the Packers emergency list.

If you can't hold on kicks for Crosby, you're gonna have to really outkick the incumbent. Wouldn't doubt personality played a role, too. I'm sure Schum won't be the last guy they workout. Masthay's been consistently inconsistent.
McGinn should write a column about how we need to get bigger, faster, stronger, meaner at P.

The #Packers have signed Lafayette WR James Butler (6-3, 217) after tryout. He's a former teammate of Christian Ringo and Alonzo Harris.

Seems more likely than not that Jordy AND Magic are to going to make the team.
