View Full Version : "Ted Thompson Always/Never ____s": Another One Bites the Dust?

There have been a few "Ted Thompson always/never" myths floating around like soap bubbles over the years, and many have been popped. Ted Thompson always gets rid of guys he didn't personally draft. Ted Thompson never trades up. Ted Thompson hates signing free agents from other teams.

This year, we may be seeing the popping of another TT soap bubble: Ted Thompson only wants to have young teams.

I don't think the stats are out there yet as to the average or mean age of each team, but this year it does seem like a much more veteran team. Think about it: all five linemen returning, with Linsley in his second year and Bahktieri in his third being the youngsters. Rodgers is a second year guy, but Quarless seems like he's been around forever (maybe too long). Had Nelson not gotten hurt, you had two vets and a second year guy. Lacey is a veteran running back, Starks even moreso. Kuhn is like the Gandalf of the team.

Rodgers in in his thirties, and his backup actually has NFL experience, albeit limited.

Same on defense. Outside the rookie corners, this is a veteran group. Defensive line, linebackers, safeties - vets who can run the complex Capers defense (I think this is the kind of group Capers has dreamed of having - vets who know the system).

So here we are, after years of youngsters, with an actual veteran team (though I am surprised by how young the offensive linemen all are - even Sitton is not yet 30).

Thompson finally has the pieces he wants. He's cycled through several drafts, has the salary cap in a good place (by comparison, the Lions had to re-draw Golden Tate's contract just to get under the cap for this year, meaning they had to put off some of his salary into the future), and seems to have a good rotation of not-too-many-contracts coming up at once.

Wow. It's good to be a Packer fan, I think.

Actually, I don't know that this year disproves the theory that TT wants young teams. The Packers are a veteran team, but they're not old. 31 of the 53 are 25 or younger. 10 are rookies. Only 6 are 30+ and that includes 2 ST guys. In other words, it seems TT knows what he's doing.

Packers are still young, top 6 in youth according to Football Outsiders. But the starters ages have started to creep up. Much of the depth is wet behind the ears.

Found it.

— The Packers, as usual, are young. According to the Philly Voice (http://www.phillyvoice.com/ranking-nfl-teams-age/), Green Bay had the third-youngest team in the NFL as of Saturday’s roster cutdown, with an average age of 25.49. That’s right in line with past seasons – 25.62 and sixth-youngest in 2014, 25.42 and sixth-youngest in 2013 and 25.65 and fifth-youngest in 2012. The Bears, not surprisingly with a new regime, are trending younger, as well. After fielding one of the five-oldest teams in each of the past three seasons, the Bears checked in at No. 19 with an average age of 26.21 — a half-year younger than last season.

Funny thing is, a few years ago when they were the youngest or second youngest roster, they were something like 5th or 6th in average experience among starters.

Maybe this is what it is. They're young, overall, as they have been, but they have more experienced starters than they used to. Maybe the depth is what's so young, while the core of the team tends to be first or second contract vets.

I heard something funny on Detroit radio this week. The talking head predicted the Lions would take the division because "Green Bay is ripe for the taking. They're an aging football team."

Yet the Lions field an older team.

Their grey beard is at MLB; ours is wearing the headphones.
