View Full Version : Lowest possible QB rating?

I thought there was a minimum QB rating, just as there is (or at least was) a maximum rating. Kaepernick put together this impressive stat line yesterday:

9 of 19 for 67 yards, 0 TDs and 4 interceptions.

His QB rate is 16.7 per the Gamebook.

I thought there was minimum that was higher than that?

Nah, it can go to zero. Cutler had a goose egg at halftime against the Pack a couple of years back.

But has it always been that way? Wasn't there a minimum at one time, just like the maximum?

I don't think it's ever been changed. Zero is the minimum though, you can't get a negative number, any negative values that the different parts of the calculation (which is possible) are zeroed out.

Actually, Wikipedia just told me it's been in place in its current, original form since 1973.

Thanks. I will have to reprogram my thinking!

Seems like you could go negatory.

Andy Dalton had a QB rating of 2 last season in a game.

What we need here is to come up with the equivalent of baseball's Mendoza Line - something so abysmal it sets a standard, and named after a player.

The Cousins Line? The Weeden Line? The Dalton Line? The Krappernick Line?

I dissected the passer rating once upon a time. Its minimum is zero and is maximum is 158.3 (I think, my dyslexia might be kicking in). It's built on four different statistics that have go from zero to a maximum.

What's lower than zero? The answer is none, none more zero.

I'm left with zero and what can I do with zero?

I'd go with the JaMarcus Russell Line.

Incredible line by Kaep. Quincy Carter smoked crack and never posted a 0 QB rating

No Packers on that list, but damn if that 2006 game didn't bring back great memories

Rex Grossman[64] 12/31/2006 Chicago Bears Green Bay Packers L 26-7 2 12 33 3 Did not play 2nd half.

No Packers on either 0 games or the 'perfect' games. Lots of wild things on the 0 list, including the dueling 0's game Atl-Stl 12/9/73. Watching that game film must cause blindness to any QB coach.

Saw that one too, and it's so ridiculously improbable that you have to assume there were some pretty mitigating circumstances to cause that - weather? General drunkenness?

Okay, I had to look it up. I had to see what John Hadl's worst game was as a Packer.

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/boxscores/197512070min.htm

11-30, 93 yards, 0 TD, 3 INT, passer rating of 9.1 in a 24-3 loss to the Vikings.

Hall of Famer Terry Bradshaw poster a "0" three times, the most by anyone?????

He started 158 games, played in 168, and had 158 games qualify with 10 or more attempts. He posted three zeros while throwing to two HoF'ers after taking the snap from a HoF'er and having the option to hand off to a HoF'er for most of those games.

My favorite one is Ryan Leaf: 1-15, 4 yds, 2 INT.

Favre's worst full game - 9.6 rating. Packers @ Denver, 1999. 7/23, 120 yards, 2 INTs.

Rodgers' worst game - 34.3 rating. Packers @ Buffalo. 34.3 rating. 17/42, 185 yards, 2 INTs.

Bradshaw was there before the three other HoFamers. So it could have been early in his career with Frenchy Fuqua.

Good grief was Favre terrible in that Thursday night game in Dallas. He looked like he wanted to be elsewhere. Rodgers comes in and looks miles better. Then he breaks his foot the following week.

Rodgers versus that Buffalo D was painful to watch.

They happened in '70, '75 and '82. '70 was Noll's 2nd year. They were 5-9. '75 was a Super Bowl year. They were 6-3 in '82. In '70, Steelers also had a 0 game from Terry Hanratty.

He was terrible and getting benched early in his career so 1970 makes sense. The first two Steeler SB teams were all defense and running. Second two were passing and Mel Blount scaring the crap out of everyone else. So 75 is believable; if they lost, the running game was probably desultory. If they won, Bradshaw probably passed 7 times.

82 was the beginning of the heyday of my revenge on the Steelers. The wheels were falling off and Gabe Rivera and Louis Lipps wouldn't be able to carry the team. Around this time Bradshaw was hurt and eventually forced to retire. He has never forgiven them for what he perceived to be bad medical advice and being hurried to return. It was a great time to live among Steeler fans. :D
