View Full Version : Think GB is looing for a WR/Return man off the waiver wire

Current WR situation:
Jennings
Driver
Ferguson
R. Martin

Both Brewster, Gardner, & Rodgers cut. That leaves only 4 WRs. I think GB has somebody in mind as a returner and WR. I think GB picks up a WR and drops Leach.

We're defintely gonna sign another WR, maybe two.

If my math is correct, we have three open roster slots--which means we can sign a wideout without cutting anybody.

That's who I'm missing. Blackmon. He must be close to returning. I'm glad they hid Hawkins and Bourke on IL.

But in year two you'd think Hawkins would contribute some. Probably better to hide him on IR than cut him though.

I don't know about that. He was pretty raw. He started like 1 game at Oklahoma.

Hawkins is a great athlete, but he just doesn't have the coverage skills.

Yea, and he wasn't playing alot in the arena league. Hey, if you can hide him IR and develop him further, why not?

Doesn't cost the Pack much at all.

cowboys released skyler green wr/pr...i seem to remember him looking good a few times.

I thought Green looked good against Minnesota. I don't like guys that are strictly return man. It would be nice if the 5th wideout could play a little WR also. I'm not sure Green isn't strictly a return man.

Maybe Coach Stock liked what he saw when he shoved R. Martin in at return with no practice and no warning. At least he caught the ball. And it was interesting to watch.

That and Ruvell's size has got to help him at WR.

Right now, even having Rob Davis back there would have been better than Cory Rodgers.

He put himself behind the 8-ball right after draft day with the gang banger wanna be incident in Texas. It went all "downhill" from there.

Bills cut Jim Leonhard.

Now that wouldn't be a bad guy for a reserve safety and a return man.

While that's true, Minnesota's special teams has been pretty bad thus far...something I'm not real happy about.

I agree the Pack will sign another WR, and maybe a returner. 2 surprises from today: Arli$$ Beach being put on IR, and Blackmon coming off PUP.

I thought Arliss was the logical choice for KR, and 4th RB. Now that he is gone for the year look for Blackmon to get a long look at PR & KR.

Our returners are: Blackmon, Jennings, Woodson, Gado, R. Martin. I am surprised they have not gone back to Ahmad Carroll now that he is not starting.

RE: WR. In a serious pinch Woodson & Blackmon could help at WR. This won't happen unless a major catastrophe ensues. If it does, Favre will need to diagram the plays in the dirt during the huddle.

woodson, jennings, blackmon..it doesnt appear that we lack talent in KR position..i havent really looked into special teams but how are the blocking assignments? if some guy is running untouched into the KR, you cant really blame the return man.

Willie Ponder got cut from the Giants today. He was their main KR guy for the last 2 years, and had a 90+ yd TD in both '04 & '05. Avg is ~ 26 yds. He is a 4th year guy out of TX A&M.

Update on Willie Ponder from Giants.com:

One of the interesting calls was the decision to keep Jennings over Ponder. A sixth-round draft choice in 2003, Ponder led the NFL in 2004 with a 26.9-yard kickoff return average, the highest by a Giant in 30 years. Ponder brought back a kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown against Pittsburgh, then returned one 95 yards for a score in last season’s opener versus Arizona. In three years, Ponder caught eight passes, none last year.

Jennings was a track star who didn’t play football at Florida State. He has received a lot of publicity for his flashy car (1995 Caprice Classic with 26-inch rims and multiple speakers), gold teeth and witty quotes. But Jennings has steadily improved as a player, largely because he was on the Giants’ practice squad for part of the 2004 season and all of 2005. In the Giants’ 4-0 preseason, Jennings had a team-high seven receptions for 70 yards and returned a punt 57 yards for a touchdown at Baltimore.

“It was a tough call, without a doubt,” Coughlin said of the Jennings/Ponder debate. “But when you look at what’s been done, you have to be fair about analyzing it. Both players can play in the league. Both have certain elements that they bring to the overall special teams and offense, and that made for a most difficult decision.”

They also have Chad Morton as a return specialist.

Peter Warrick of Seattle was dropped and is available as was Michael Lewis of New Orleans, but I believe he's injured.

TT NEEDS to sign a return man. Right now, we have Noah Herron and Samkon Gado as our top two kick off return men. That duo will scare NO ONE! That tells me that TT is okay with having sub-standard special teams. UNACCEPTABLE! I have been asking all pre-season long, "why do we keep putting Herron back there, he's not a return man!" Well now he is our only option and TT needs to fix it, NOW!!!!!

Yes, TT does have to find someone. Special teams last year was the weakest link on our team (yes, there were many others).

They should be trying to get more players in for a look-see. Jim Leonhard would be a good start.

Its been awhile since I've seen him, but does Leonhard have wheels? I remember him as a tough runner, but hardly a burner. Is he a returner?

Not sure if the Bills used him as a returner before they cut him.

Agree he was not a speed demon, but he did use his blockers enough to get into the endzone at Wisconsin.

You forgot Woodson and, now, Martin. I do believe someone will be brought in, though. Unless Martin surprised a few people. Perhaps Willie Ponder. I am much more worried about finding coverage people. They couldn't keep up with the kicks.

I know he has been injured so I don't know when he'll be ready, but Blackmon is an experienced KR guy (in college at least). TT may be counting on him to step up.

From Packers.com:
Registered 2,700 career kickoff return yards, 222 yards shy of the Division I-A all-time mark

I wonder if they'll audition him on the PS for a couple of weeks or if they saw enough of him before he got injured.

edit: never mind. They won't do that.

Willard

My guess is Blackmon is getting close to healthy. I thought the only reason it was taking him so long to come back from his broken foot was not medical, but procedural. My understanding is that if TT had cleared him to play at any point during preseason he would not be eligible to go on PUP list. I think TT kept him inactive to keep the Packer's options open. Now that he is one of the 53 I expect to see him start practicing immediately. Has anybody actually heard anything about his current status?

I disagree, he was the only corner on the field yesterday who didn't give up a big play.
