First he promoted Sashi Brown, previously the team's general council (a lawyer by any other name...is still a lawyer!) to to executive director of football operations and has full control of the roster.

Now Paul DePodesta, who was the Mets' - yes, the Mets, you know, MLB? - GM to be the Browns' Chief Strategy Officer. This is the guy that did the Sabermetrics analysis for the Oakland A's back in the day.

Radio here has it that he's a salary cap guy. Will connect Haslam's cash to the GM, who will have player selection control. Obviously, no GM can really have total control, because, well, money. Probably a good thing also to have a buffer between the GM and owner, because having the owner select the QB and having the GM make in game decisions about playing time didn't work out so well.

By the nature of the analytics he does, he might be cap guy, but he will also have input when assigning value to players. At least once there are in the NFL, but possibly for draftees as well.

And other than drafting Joe Thomas and getting a first round puck for Trent Richardson, there's not much competition. Poor old Browns--they've become what the Clippers used to be in the NBA until a few years ago.

A puck was all he was worth. And the Browns blew it on....

That pick turned out to be No. 26 overall. It wasn't as high as Cleveland hoped, but they were able to parlay the extra pick into even more draft value. Here's what they did on draft night:

Traded their own pick (4th overall) to Buffalo for a 2014 first-round pick (9th overall), a 2015 first-round pick, and a 2015 fourth-round pick.
Picked Justin Gilbert at No. 9.
Traded Indianapolis' first-round pick (26th overall) and their own third-round pick (83rd overall) to Philadelphia for their first-round pick (22nd overall) .
Picked Johnny Manziel at No. 22.
