Who cares about this right now? What's important is the game Saturday against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Pack can win if they can get some pressure on Jim Hart, though.

Forget Hart. They need to get pressure on Lomax, otherwise, without Shields, Roy Green will go nuts on us.

This story isn't over.

It now seems evident that the NFL's preference is for just one team to relocate to the Los Angeles area.

Rooney emphasized the need to establish a program that will allow the communities of San Diego and Oakland to keep their franchises. McNair similarly stressed the opportunity for the Chargers and Raiders to find a solution in their current markets.

While Goodell revealed the $100 million assistance package, he did not disclose the relocation fee.

Here's what else we learned from the Los Angeles Rams' relocation press conference:

1. Goodell raved about the plans for Kroenke's Inglewood property as a stadium that will be the centerpiece of "one of the greatest complexes" in the sports world. It was important to the NFL that the stadium suit the Los Angeles market, doubling as an entertainment complex.

2. Spanos offered no clues as to whether he plans to exercise his option and join Kroenke in Inglewood. "I'm going to take a day off," a weary Spanos said. "I'm going to look at all of our options." The City of San Diego is hosting a June vote for $350 million in public funding toward a new facility to replace Qualcomm Stadium.

3. While Davis congratulated Kroenke on the owners' approval, he conceded that the results were "not a win" for the Raiders. "We're looking forward to giving Raider Nation a proper home," Davis added. "Don't give up. We'll get there." At this point, it appears the Raiders will be playing the 2016 season in Oakland.

If the Rams do go back to LA, I hope they use the "blue and white" outfits for their throwbacks. I always favored the simplistic look over the blue/yellow deal.

I heard on Rich Eisen's show that there is real enthusiasm in the NFL for Item #1 in Joe's quote. Entertainment complexes are apparently the next big revenue driver, in addition to owning the overall stadium revenue and hosting other events. If the Chargers move with them, the stadium would need to be scaled back since Spano's pockets aren't as deep.

Weirdly, that factor might help smaller franchises get help to stay in their current cities. I wonder how long that will last.

teams better figure out pretty fast (if they haven't already) how to make their facilities attractive for other events. 10 events a year is an absurdity, especially if the locals are paying taxes for it.

But the league wants to be there. Especially because it entails plenty of free stuff for the NFL, including a new campus for the league’s in-house media conglomerate.

And no one likes free stuff more than those who don’t need free stuff.

No I know why Rich Eisen was convinced the NFL owners were stoked about the Inglewood project.

I had to consult google maps to learn that San Diego is only a bit over an hour and a half drive to Anaheim.
Maybe sharing a stadium isn't as nuts as my first impression.
Edit: Doh! It's Inglewood, not Anaheim. Still, that's just 2 hours.

I'm happy to see the Rams back in L.A. Tradition matters a lot. Cleveland got Lebron back, that's enough for them.

I feel bad for Oakland. That stadium is a disaster.

Actually the Holiday Bowl was at San Diego's stadium, and Mike Lucas said that place is the worst p.o.s. in the land.

San Fran and Oakland should share a stadium.

L.A. and S.D. should share a stadium located halfway between them.

I though Rich Stadium was the worst - and it's pretty bad. But Qualcomm is and older dual purpose stadium and is terrible for both.

So we come full circle. When I was but a lad, I saw my first NFL game in Tiger Stadium in Detroit. They just ran chalk lines right over the dirt of the infield, and there was about a seventy-five yard space behind the sidelines up to the first row of seats in the stadium's left and right field corners.

Little did we know it was an "entertainment complex." Later, I watched the Packers play the Lions in the old Pontiac Silverdome, which also hosted monster truck shows and tractor pulls. Another "entertainment complex."

Maybe they could host a seventh-grade science fair at Lambeau Field, and - wala! - another "entertainment complex" will be born.

They used to do this at the Metrodome too. "We're gonna turn the metrodome into A MUD PIT!!! Daddy Don Garlits with be there with his dragster! Miss Universe!!" It was all aimed at the University intellectuals.

Sounds to me like the Raiders are open to the idea of moving somewhere - just about anywhere. I wonder if they'd consider St. Louis. I don't think support for the Rams was too bad there, and they have a decent domed stadium. Also, there is San Antonio - about the biggest non-NFL city, and it already has the Alamo Dome, which ain't too bad a place.

They met with San Antionio last year and that's their biggest rumored place to move if they do so. St. Louis is done with the NFL I think. They won't build a new stadium for the Rams, so I doubt they'll do it anytime soon for the Raiders.

I agree. They have to compete with USC and UCLA among football fans, but also 2 baseball teams, 2 NBA teams, and an NHL team. In addition MLS has 1 LA team, and shortly will have 2. With LA's large hispanic population, that's one city where futbol might be more popular than football.

Harlan Huckleby
01-14-2016, 05:49 PM
Actually, I don't think "the area" support matters much for the NFL. Football, as opposed to the other sports, is nearly completely nationalized. They sell TV across the country, whereas baseball is mostly broadcast in local markets. TV rights are the big money. The misc. local revenues hardly matters. Maybe that wasn't so true 20 years ago.

In case you think I'm talking out of my ass, well, I'll have you know I heard this explanation yesterday from somebody on TV, so it must be true.

They still have to keep the local owner profitable, but NFL is so popular now, I doubt that is much of a concern.

pbmax
01-14-2016, 06:18 PM
The National money is big and a difference maker, obviously. But the newer ownerships have been making hay with local sponsorships (Washington has sponsors for training camp AND chargers admission). Jerry violated the League official beverage deal with Coke to land Pepsi as a sponsor. And Rodger Goodall was the flunky that found a way to sell that to the League Office and other owners.

So local revenue is much larger piece of the pie (especially compared to pre-Jones Snyder Kraft groups) and can make or break a team's debt service.

It would be going too far to suggest that a lack of sell outs is going to doom them though. There are very large sponsors that could be had in LA. Its competitive, but the pool is very large

Huh, imagine that. Funny business to land a big deal.

Via Angel Jennings of the Los Angeles Times, Barbara Ohno alleges that Inglewood Mayor James T. Butts (pictured) instructed employees to “create a faςade of financial responsibility and well-being” (http://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la-me-ln-inglewood-whistleblower-20160524-snap-story.html)for Inglewood during the competition with Carson for the privilege of putting a football stadium within city limits. Ohio claim that Inglewood regularly used money from a federal Asset Forfeiture Fund to pay for expenses that could not be covered by the Inglewood General Fund.

“I was told to stand down, look the other way and be a team player because when Inglewood got the Rams, there would be so much money coming in, no one would care how the city ran its finances,” Ohno said in a statement, via the Times.
