The annual Krispy Kreme Challenge, a race that involves eating doughnuts, took a turn for the not-so-sweet when a competitor died over the weekend. According to the New York Post, a 58-year-old participant named Jeff Woods dropped out of the race in Raleigh, North Carolina after the first mile due to chest pains. He was rushed to the hospital and eventually pronounced dead.
Woods never made it to the Krispy Kreme store that is located at the halfway point of the five mile race. Participants presupposed to stop at the store and eat a dozen doughnuts before finishing the final two-and-a-half miles of the race. The competition has been around for the past 12 years and it benefits the North Carolina Children’s hospital.
