The #Patriots are trading for TE Martellus Bennett, source confirmed (as @AdamSchefter said). It's a swap of late-round picks.

The #Bears had decided Martellus Bennett needed to go. They tried to trade him for about 18 months. Finally found a taker: The #Patriots.

Patriots will give up 4th and get back a 6th as well in Bennett deal. Late-round compensation still being worked out.

Makes sense. Bears likely didn't want him to find his way to another team in the division. Pats are trying to replenish their skill positions, especially after that devastating run of injuries last season.

True. Though I figure that if I get the facts of the deal out front people won't have to deal with "x" number of shit posts by the broken record.

If Bennett is so wonderful why did Chicago get rid of him?

Because Jay Cutler sucks?

Also potential attitude problems.

Bennett and Gronk on the same team with the best QB in the league. That could be pretty awesome.

Wait, Rodgers got traded to the Pats?

Brady is a better QB than Rodgers.

I can't stand the Pats so it makes me feel dirty saying this but I have to agree.

Obviously the Bears were not going to trade Bennett to the Packers.

But the reason this is upsetting is the Pats have the best TE in the NFL and are still trying to improve the position. We have perhaps one of the worst TEs in the NFL, and we have done nothing to improve it.

Their entire offense is 1 RB, 2 TE, 2 WR. They need a second starter at TE.

Well, they certainly were not going to trade him to anyone in the division and probably wanted to avoid keeping him in the NFC.

Which free-agent tight ends out there have speed down the middle?

And is Backman fast? I don't recall.

We need our first starter at TE.

If you take out the hail mary, Richard Rodgers averaged 8 yards per catch. That's really hard to do.

If you take out the stupid passes to Rodgers in the flat/TE screen/swing passes that almost never works, I'd bet that average ticks up towards 10-11.

Sometimes it's the player. Sometimes it's the play call.

oh I agree that play is stupid. not sure why they run it.

they run it because they expect him to break a tackle and turn the ball up field, but he has no fluidity on those catches.

Does anyone know if Rodgers improved upon his 1.7 YAC from the 2014 season?

Not unless he grew taller.

Unless he suddenly gains a lot of balance, I don't think you'll see a lot of YAC from Rodgers. That dumpoff to the flat for 3 yards was pretty awful to watch, especially when it was a CB knifing in to take out Rodgers' legs and watch him flop over. I like Rodgers and think he's a good #2 TE, but he's not fast and not a good blocker either. Would like to see a faster, athletic TE to threaten the middle, and a good blocking TE as the #3. I don't think Backman is going to be the answer to either.

Bennett would have been a great addition, but there's no way Chicago would trade within the division.

Imagine what the meeting room and locker room will be like with Bennett and Gronk. There's a couple of personalities.

One would think by now they would know RR can't break a tackle to save his life. All a LB or DB has to do is sneeze at him and he topples over. :-|

It is pretty depressing to watch.
