Like the pick. I messed up when I did my best available for round 2. I had Spriggs way higher than Coleman. He would have been 3rd on my list going into today behind Ragland and H. Henry.

IU not an OT factory: The most appearances by a Hoosiers tackle in the NFL are 146 games — recorded by Bob Skoronski, 5th-rounder in 1956.

Who could forget Skoronski.? A real monster at tackle.

With all the hoopla over ILB needs, I looked at 14 other teams that play the 3-4 and took a look at their starters (per the NFL depth chart). Here's where they came from:

Rd 1 - 5 (Pittsburgh has 2 of them)
Rd 2 - 8
Rd 3 - 4
Rd 4 - 1
Rd 5 - 2
Rd 6 - 1
UDFA - 6

So it seems the majority of the starters at ILB do come in the 1st or 2nd round. I'm surprised at the number of UDFA. But thought I would share this to help out with the discussion. This does not include the Packers, as I wanted to see where the rest of the league was. So it would appear that TT needs to put some more emphasis on those first 3 rounds for ILB. Betting on a later round or UDFA seems like hope, and hope is not a good strategy.

The Packers ILB are a 4th and a 7th.

5. CHRISTIAN HACKENBERG | Penn State 6043|223 lbs|3JR Palmyra, Va. (Fork Union) 2/14/1995 (age 21) #14

BACKGROUND: A five-star quarterback recruit out of high school, Hackenberg was the top quarterback recruit in the 2013 class and received scholarship offers very early in his high school career, ultimately choosing Penn State over Alabama, Florida and others – chose the Nittany Lions because of head coach Bill O’Brien and his offense. He won the starting job as a true freshman in 2013 (12 starts) and earned Thompson-Randel El Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors. He set new school records for a freshman with 231 completions, 2,955 passing yards and a career-best 20 touchdowns, earning Freshman All-America honors. With O’Brien off to the NFL after the 2013 season, Hackenberg struggled to adjust to the new coaching staff, throwing a career-high 15 interceptions as a sophomore in 2014, adding 55.8% completions and a personal-best 2,977 passing yards. He started all 13 games as a junior in 2015 and set career-lows in completion percentage (53.5%) and passing yards (2,525), but did improve his touchdown-to-interception ratio (16-to-6). Hackenberg elected to forego his senior season and enter the 2016 NFL Draft.

STRENGTHS: Ideal physical build and height for the position…live arm to rip lasers with above average velocity and zip…effortless deep ball thrower and able to make throws other quarterbacks are physically unable to make…toughness isn’t a question with the size to take consistent punishment and bounce back…quick-footed athlete for his size to easily move in the pocket or stretch his legs and throw from different platforms – clean footwork in his three, five and seven step drops…experienced taking snaps under center with pro-style concepts…two-year team captain (second youngest player to be elected captain in school history) and viewed as a leader in the locker room…well-respected on campus, especially for the way he handled adversity with the sanctions (helped keep 2013 recruiting class together) and the struggles with the coaching change…durable and didn’t miss a start the last three seasons (21-17 record as a starter)…leaves Penn State with school records for career passing yards (8,457), completions (693) and 300-yard passing games (nine).

WEAKNESSES: Nonexistent feel in the pocket, struggling to navigate around the noise…slow to process and late reading coverages…too relaxed and needs to show more urgency from snap to release…immature eye use, staring down targets and predetermining throws, which leads to baffling decisions…wasn’t
consistently asked to make whole field reads or work sideline-to-sideline in his progressions…upper and lower half mechanics are often on different pages, affecting his overall accuracy…doesn’t need to drive his hips to add zip on throws, but improved follow through motion will help his precision…methodical set-up and delivery, but often out of rhythm…highly inconsistent ball placement and downfield touch, struggling to control his ball speeds – completion percentage dropped each season…deer in headlights when blitzed – often sees it coming, but doesn’t make the proper adjustments pre- or post-snap…played behind a shaky offensive line (sacked 103 times in his career), but too many of those hits were of his own doing, holding the ball too long and clamming up under pressure…confidence needs rebuilt…quick-footed athlete for his size, but won’t routinely evade pressures with a bad habit of retreating and getting lost…ball security needs improved (17 career fumbles)…didn’t miss a game in college, but missed the second half of his final game (Jan. 2016) due to a sprained right shoulder – not considered serious, but needs cleared.

SUMMARY: A three-year starter, Hackenberg had a promising freshman campaign in 2013 under the guidance of Bill O’Brien, but his development regressed with the new coaches the past two seasons – both coaching staffs used traditional, pro-style schemes, mostly I-formation and under center snaps. He didn’t receive much help from his surroundings the past two years with questionable play-calling, inconsistent weapons and a leaky offensive line, but Hackenberg deserves plenty of blame as well. Although he has special arm talent, the tape shows flawed decision-making, poor pocket awareness and streaky accuracy due to unstable mechanics. There is no question that Hackenberg will benefit from NFL coaching, but the game still moves at light speed for him and hasn’t shown signs of slowing down – is he already damaged goods? Overall, the physical traits and arm strength are ideal for the NFL, but Hackenberg doesn’t show a natural feel for the game and lacks a strong grasp in three critical areas of playing the position: touch, placement and decision-making – will be overdrafted in the top-50, but the tape shows a mid-round project.

My prediction for tonights Rounds 2 and 3 of the 2016 NFL Draft::

Whatever TT does I think most of Packer Nation's first reactionary words will be one of these:

a) Whhhhhaaaaat ..as in ...Whhhhhaaaaat the HELL !

b) Yoooouuuuuuu....as in....Yoooouuuuuuu Dumb Ass !

c) Fuuuuuuucccck ! .......... Red's neighbours will hear that scream.

Incredibly, none of these things seemed to happen! Wist wasn't enthused, but he didn't even swear.

BACKGROUND: A three-star linebacker recruit, Deion “Debo” Jones received interest from TCU, Arizona and several others, but LSU was his “dream school” and once Les Miles offered him, he committed to the Tigers – nicknamed “Debo” after his father’s favorite two athletes: Deion Sanders and Bo Jackson. He carved out a key special teams role as a true freshman with 23 tackles over 13 games, earning the Wild Tiger Trophy for the most special teams production. Jones was stuck behind Lamin Barrow on the depth chart as a sophomore and played all 13 games on special teams, recording 15 tackles. He was Kwon Alexander’s back-up in 2014 and earned his first start as a junior, finishing with 27 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss. With Alexander off to the NFL, Jones took over the starting weakside linebacker job as a senior and led the team with 100 tackles and 13.0 tackles for loss, adding five passes defended and two interceptions. He accepted his invitation to the 2016 Senior Bowl.

STRENGTHS: Reliable reactive athleticism to go from A-to-B in a hurry…strong plant-and-drive burst once he sees it…plays with range and decisive strides to stick to tight ends and backs in coverage – even lined up at cornerback on some snaps…above average straight-line speed and lateral quickness for the position…active, but limits mistakes and plays patient, allowing plays to develop…high football I.Q. and understands his responsibilities…fierce hands to fight through blockers and find the ballcarrier, staying low and on his feet…physical tackler with aggressive limbs to finish…special teams standout due to his speed, vision and toughness – spent first three seasons primarily as special teams coverages, but didn’t gripe, maintaining a positive mindset…earned praise from his coaches for his ability and commitment to the team – (LSU head coach Les Miles: “He’s a very bright kid and one of the fastest guys on our team”).

WEAKNESSES: Slender shoulders and waist for the position, lacking ideal build…too patient at times vs. the run, losing outside contain or allowing blockers to gain leverage…aggressive fighting through blocks, but take-on strength is average and needs to improve his shed strategy…lowers his eyes and loses his target at times as a tackler, which creates an inconsistent strike zone…needs to clean up his striking technique with a bad habit of leading with his helmet – ejected from 2015 Auburn game for targeting…ballskills are a work-in-progress…needs to improve his communication in coverage to prevent busts…only one season as a starter (12 career starts).

SUMMARY: A one-year starter, Jones took over the weakside linebacker role as a senior in LSU’s 4-2-5 scheme, playing every down and on special teams – rarely left the field. He struggled to crack the starting line-up over his first three seasons in Baton Rouge, but stayed upbeat and controlled what he could, standing out on special teams coverages. Although undersized, Jones has fluid athleticism to play sideline-to-sideline and stay within arms-length of pass-catchers in coverage. He is football smart, but plays hesitant at times and doesn’t always trust what he sees due to his lack of defensive reps. Jones is at-worst a productive special teamer at the next level, but he also has starting potential in the right role due to his athleticism to cover the entire field vs. the pass and the run – top-64 draft pick.

BACKGROUND: A five-star safety recruit out of high school, Cravens was ranked as the top prep player in the state of California and received offers from every top program in the country, committing to USC the summer prior to his senior year. He started at strong safety as a true freshman and recorded 52 tackles and four interceptions, earning All-Pac 12 Honorable Mention and numerous Freshman All-American honors. Cravens moved to a hybrid linebacker/safety role in 2014 as a sophomore and showed off his versatility by leading the team in tackles for loss (17.0) and interceptions (three), adding 68 tackles and 12 passes defended to earn First Team All-Pac 12 and All-America honors. He started all 14 games as a junior and led the Trojans in tackles (86), tackles for loss (15.0), sacks (5.5) and forced fumbles (two), earning First Team All-Pac 12 and All-America honors for the second straight year. Cravens elected to forego his senior season to enter the 2016 NFL Draft.

STRENGTHS: Fluid athlete for his size and flawlessly transfers his weight in his movements…explosive burst to beat blockers to the spot with controlled pursuit speed – sees through blockers to make the initial man miss and break down on the move…diagnoses quickly with an attacking mindset and reactive athleticism – high FBI, anticipation and sense of his surroundings…comfortable in space and can cover a lot of green, staying in phase with receivers in man coverage or making stops vs. the run in the backfield…great job leveraging blocks and will sacrifice himself to give his teammates a chance to make the play…savvy blitzer, avoiding the hands of blockers and using timing to penetrate…very good field awareness and takes correct pursuit angles…knack for making plays on the ball and creating after pick-offs, averaging 14.8 yards per interception return (9/133/1)…versatile skill-set and played all over the USC defense as a safety, linebacker or cornerback – also played on special teams coverages…team captain and praised by the coaches for the way he carries himself – eats, drinks and breathes football…strong-willed, but down-toearth and comfortable in his own skin…enjoys competition and toughness isn’t an issue…athletic bloodlines – brother (football) and sister (basketball) played athletics at Hawaii and he has multiple cousins who played football collegiately and now in the NFL, including tight end Jordan Cameron and linebacker Manti Te’o.

WEAKNESSES: Lean-muscled and lacks an ideal build or growth potential for linebacker – appears maxed out physically…core strength doesn’t always match his intentions…improved fundamental tackler, but still undisciplined in areas and has some bad habits that will lead to missed tackles – tends to drop his head and isn’t a wrap, lift and drive player…can be engulfed by blockers and eaten up near the line of scrimmage, struggling to take on bigger bodies…aggressive nature will lead to negative plays, misreading zone read plays or overpursuing his target…played most of his USC career near the line of scrimmage and was rarely in the deep half of the field…positional fit is a question mark for some schemes…missed only one game the past three seasons, but parts of several others due to injuries, including a sore right elbow (Oct. 2015), sprained right knee (Nov. 2014) and groin injury (Oct. 2013) – missed part of 2013 spring practice after surgery for torn cartilage in his knee.

SUMMARY: A three-year starter, Cravens began his career at strong safety before moving to a hybrid strongside linebacker position in the Trojans’ 3-4 base defense where he was asked to do a little bit of everything, playing mostly at the line of scrimmage. His take-on strength and physical nature as a tackler are both below average for the position, but he’s a fluid athlete with excellent reaction skills to can cover wide receivers on an island. Cravens’ best traits are his natural instincts to anticipate the play and always be around the ball – consistently in the right place at the right time and that’s not an accident. His positional fit in the NFL will vary by scheme with some viewing him as a strong safety and others as a weakside linebacker in a 4-3 base, but clever coordinators will figure out how to maximize his savvy instincts, cover skills and athleticism – top-40 prospect and will be a productive NFL player if schemed correctly.

BACKGROUND: A four-star cornerback recruit out of high school, Alexander initially verballed to Tennessee, but reopened his recruitment and committed to Clemson – twin brother committed to Auburn and is now at South Florida. After redshirting in 2013 due to a groin injury, Alexander earned a starting cornerback job as a redshirt freshman in 2014 (set a school record for snaps by a freshman) and recorded 21 tackles and six passes defended, earning Freshman All-America and All-ACC Honorable Mention honors. He started 14 games in 2015 as a sophomore and posted similar production with 23 tackles and five passes defended, earning First Team All-ACC honors. Alexander opted to forego his final two years of eligibility to enter the 2016 NFL Draft.

STRENGTHS: Quick-footed in his transition with the speed to match receivers off the line of scrimmage…fluid hips with the lower body muscle fibers to spring in any direction…nimble drive process to click-and-close…uses his body to cut off routes, understanding how to leverage the field and sideline…keeps an eye in the backfield to jump routes and intercept angles…highly physical for the position in both coverage and run support…very good high-to-low tackler downhill, throwing his body around…cocky, brash and plays with an attitude – loves to talk on the field and play mind games with receivers…applies coaching and is dedicated to honing his craft – already prepares like a pro…innately motivated and driven by his family – his fire for competition can’t be extinguished…battle tested over 27 starts, usually shadowing the opponent’s top receiving threat, lining up inside and outside – quarterbacks completed only 24.5% of passes in 2015 when targeting his receiver.

WEAKNESSES: Lacks elite size and arm length for the position…played mostly press-bail technique in college, flipping his hips early in the play, causing him to get turned around instead of staying square to the receiver…not as comfortable in off-coverage and still developing his route anticipation and understanding of
coverage indicators…struggles to locate the ball once he takes his eyes of the backfield and needs to improve his feel with his back to the ball…suspect ballskills and will leave production on the field – no interceptions at Clemson…throws his body around, but prefers to lead with his shoulder instead of wrapping up…loves to talk, but needs to keep his emotions under control…puts too much pressure on himself to be the best…marches to the beat of his own drum – guarded and idiosyncratic personality will be a turn off for some…minor durability concerns, redshirting in 2013 due to groin surgery (Sept. 2013) and missed most of the National Championship game due to a nagging right hamstring (Dec. 2015) from the Orange Bowl – missed parts of several games due to a knee sprain (Oct. 2015).

SUMMARY: A two-year starter at Clemson, Alexander played mostly press-man coverage and was left on an island, relying primarily on bail technique. He didn’t record an interception in college, but wasn’t consistently targeted and didn’t give up a touchdown the last 24 games, dating back to September of his freshman season. Alexander smothers in man coverage due to his lower body fluidity and quick reflexes, but needs to improve his route anticipation, discipline and ballskills, especially in off coverage. He plays with contagious swagger and confidence to challenge any one, working hard to get in the head of wide receivers. Although still unpolished in several key areas, Alexander is wired right for the position and should start very early in his NFL career – not as big as Josh Norman, but similar skill-sets.

BACKGROUND: A four-star wide receiver recruit out of high school, Boyd narrowed his college choice to Pitt, West Virginia and Tennessee, committing to the in-state Panthers – was a high school quarterback and also lettered in basketball and baseball. He saw early playing time as a true freshman, starting 10 games and leading the team with 85 catches (new ACC freshman record) and 1,174 receiving yards, breaking Larry Fitzgerald’s Pitt freshman records in both categories. Boyd started 12 games in 2014 as a sophomore and set a career-best with 1,261 receiving yards to become the first player in ACC history to tally 1,000+ receiving yards in both his freshman and sophomore seasons, earning First Team All-ACC honors. He started 12 games in 2015 as a junior and led the team in receiving for the third straight season with a career-best 91 catches for 926 yards (only time he finished below the 1,000-yard mark) and six touchdowns. Boyd was the lone unanimous First Team player on the All-ACC team. He chose to leave for the NFL Draft after the season, skipping his senior year.

STRENGTHS: Gliding athlete with an instant accelerator to reach his top speed with his initial strides…sharp cuts and burst off his plant foot, mixing his gears well in his patterns…quick release off the line of scrimmage with natural route running prowess, setting up defenders and selling routes with beautiful body fakes…easy body control to twist mid-air and adjust to obscure ball placement…excellent hand-eye coordination with strong hands to pluck, extending his catching radius beyond what most his size can – attacks the ball, doesn’t wait for it…lack of body strength shows in traffic, but surprisingly efficient in contested situations…tough over the middle and always looking to pick up yards after the catch – innate field awareness…highly competitive playing temperament and lunch pail worker…lined up everywhere in the Pitt offense, including outside and in the slot – also lined up as a running back (8.3 career rush average, 63/520/1) and quarterback, displaying a strong arm to be a passing weapon (3-for-4 passing in his career for 96 yards)…return man on special teams, averaging 24.4 yards on kickoff returns (46/1,124/0) and 8.8 yards on punt returns (27/238/1)…leaves Pitt with the school career records for receiving yards (3,361) and receptions (254).

WEAKNESSES: Underwhelming size with a thin torso and lean body features…limited bulk and lacks the power to fight through tackle attempts or pick up yards after initial contact…lacks an ideal build to take consistent punishment in the NFL…majority of his routes at Pitt are within seven yards of the line of scrimmage (screens, slants, etc.) and unproven as a consistent downfield threat…will hear ghosts around him, leading to concentration drops…holds the ball too loose as a ballcarrier, leading to ball security concerns…struggles to gain correct positioning as a blocker with below average functional strength – too easily pushed around and needs technique work to mask his lack of power…off-field decision-making needs investigated – arrested and charged with a DUI (June 2015), leading to a suspension over the summer and 2015 season opener.

SUMMARY: A three-year starter, Boyd played with three different starting quarterbacks each of his three years with the Panthers, but his production was consistent each season, leaving Pitt as the school’s all-time leading receiver. With streaky quarterback play and running back James Conner sidelined for 2015, the Pitt playcalling manufactured touches for Boyd, including hand-offs and shorter routes, as the clear top playmaker on offense. A graceful athlete, he trusts his hands and uses quick eyes to snatch and immediately analyze his surroundings, but his body size does lead to durability concerns, especially over the middle. Despite average measureables, Boyd is an exquisite catcher of the football and able to stand out by paying attention to the details – second round prospect and his ideal NFL fit is in the slot in a Jarvis Landry-type role.

From PFF:

23 (54). Minnesota Vikings: Mackensie Alexander | Grade: A
No. 21 on the PFF Draft Board, Alexander is strong in man coverage and his movement skills allow him to stay with shifty receivers. The Clemson scheme did him no favors from a grading standpoint, but he allowed only 0.66 yards per cover snap, good for 10th in the class. He struggles with zone concepts at times, missing tackles in open space, but Alexander is a good pick at this point in the draft.

1. CODY WHITEHAIR | Kansas State 6036|301 lbs|5SR Abilene, Kan. (Abilene) 7/11/1992 (age 23) #55
YEAR (GP/GS) GRADE 1st-2nd Round 2011: Redshirted MEASUREABLES Arm: 32 | Hand: 10 1/8 | Wingspan: 79 2012: (13/12) 9 LG, 3 RT COMBINE 40-YD: 5.02 | 10-YD: 1.73 | 20-YD: 2.95 | BP: 16 | VJ: 25.5 | BJ: 09’02” | SS: 4.58 | 3C: 7.32 2013: (13/13) 13 LG PRO DAY N/A (positional drills only) 2014: (13/13) 13 LT 2015: (13/13) 13 LT Total: (52/51) 26 LT, 22 LG, 3 RT

BACKGROUND: A three-star recruit out of high school, Whitehair grew up hoping to one day play at Kansas State, choosing the Wildcats over scholarship offers from Oklahoma State and Colorado State. After redshirting in 2011, he became a starter in 2012 and split time between right tackle and left guard, earning Honorable Mention All-Big 12 honors. Whitehair started all 13 games at left guard in 2013 before kicking out to left tackle in 2014 where he started every game the last two years, earning Second Team All-Big 12 honors each of the last three years. He accepted his invitation to the 2016 Senior Bowl.

STRENGTHS: Adequate build and body type…balanced set-up and sinks hips at the point of attack…quick off the snap with the wide base and shuffle to handle speed…works hard to square, stick and anchors while holding form with proper knee bend…at his best when he gets into rushers to make first contact and control their chest with a quick punch…strong upper body to ride defenders away from the pocket…athletic puller and controlled in space to connect and seal on secondlevel blocks…veteran awareness with excellent vision and pressure instincts, keeping his head on a swivel…tough as nails and plays through pain…four-year starter with versatile experience at left tackle (26 starts), left guard (22) and right tackle (three), earning All-Big 12 honors all four seasons…well-coached and considered the hardest worker on the team – wants to be the best and leads by example.

WEAKNESSES: Lacks ideal size, length and growth potential…bad habit of lunging due to his shorter arms…too much of a catch blocker and needs to be more aggressive with his hands to keep rushers from attacking his body, getting him upright and pushing him on his heels…struggles to control the point of attack in the run game – relies on body position more than power in the run game…needs to better control his momentum on the move and break down in space…needs to eliminate the holding penalties with a bad habit of grabbing a fistful of jersey…needs to show more of a nasty attitude to bully, bury and finish.

SUMMARY: A four-year starter, Whitehair “prefers” to play guard, but he has extensive experience at tackle and has practiced at center – team-first attitude and played where he was needed. He left an indelible mark at Kansas State with his leadership, work ethic and high-level of play the last four years and boasts the professional make-up that will be welcomed in NFL locker rooms – does all the right things and endeared by coaches (Kansas State head coach Bill Snyder: “He has great respect from his teammates…the ability to guide and direct young people in the right direction”). Whitehair is assignment sound and rarely makes mistakes with the quick punch and shuffle to stone rushers in pass protection, but he isn’t as effective as a run blocker and needs to develop a more physical mean streak. He doesn’t have the length to hold up consistently on the edges in the NFL, but Whitehair has the base strength, toughness and instincts to start as a rookie at either guard or center – late first round prospect.

Cody Whitehair, OG
Height: 6-4 Weight: 301
Class: rSr Hometown: Abilene, KS

PLAYER OVERVIEW

A 50-game starter, Whitehair received All-Big 12 honors all four seasons at Kansas State, punctuated by his lone first-team nod as a senior.
He has experience at guard and tackle, including the past two years at tackle, and played in all 51 games over his four-year career.

A three-star recruit out of high school, Whitehair became a starter as a redshirt freshman. He began his career at left guard and right tackle before moving to left tackle as a junior in 2014, earning Second Team All-Big 12 honors. Whitehair returned to left tackle as a senior captain in 2015.

"I think he's probably better at guard in our league, but he might be able to play all five positions if needed," an AFC scout told NFLDraftScout.com. "He knows how to neutralize speed off the edge or quickness inside ... very, very well-coached and it shows on film."

Whitehair knows his versatility will be a significant plus to his draft stock.

"I would like to think I can play (inside and outside)," he told NFLDraftScout.com. "I would prefer to play guard. But if a team that I play for needs me at tackle, I'm up for that too. I'm up for playing whatever position. Someone needs me at center, I could tackle that position. Ultimately guard and tackle. Either way I feel comfortable."

Whitehair also received strong praise from the Kansas State coaching staff for his work ethic and leadership abilities.

"It just comes from within, the motivation that I want to be successful and I want this team to be successful," he said. "I come to work every day with that mentality. I know people say we lost so many guys and have spots to fill, but we just come to work every day. And hopefully that attitude and mentality rubs off on my teammates. I grew up in this program and around these guys so this program means a lot to me."

STRENGTHS WEAKNESSES

STRENGTHS: Adequate size for the position and uses his wide base to handle speed off the edge, staying balanced and sinking his hips at the point of attack. He squares well and rides defenders away from the ballcarrier, using his punch and hand placement to lock on and engage. Plays with veteran awareness, displaying excellent vision and instincts to recognize pressures pre-snap.
WEAKNESSES: While he does a nice job handling edge speed, Whitehair can get beat when he allows rushers to attack his body, forcing him upright and on his heels. His toughness is off the charts, but he could add a pinch of nastiness to his playing recipe, eliminating catch blocks. Also tends to get grabby at times, which will attract yellow laundry at the next level, appearing much more comfortable inside rather than at tackle.

COMPARES TO: Zack Martin, Cowboys - Although not as physically gifted as Martin, Whitehair is a similar player with his ability to square up to defenders and control the point of attack. And similar to Martin, Whitehair is a college left tackle who will move inside to guard in the NFL.

IN OUR VIEW: A college left tackle, he will move inside to guard for in the NFL, which he considers his best (and favorite) position. Whitehair is an assignment-sound blocker, staying square to his target with anchor strength and aggressive hands.

ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS Was Mr. Automatic during Florida State's successful run from 2013*-2014 and connected on 88.5 percent of his field goals during his career. Never missed a field goal from 39 yards and in during his three years at Florida State going 46-of-46. When it's time to tackle, he leverages returners against the sideline and has speed and athleticism to make the tackle. Leg strength on kickoffs improved with each year. Has outstanding 4.09 kickoff hang time. Unfazed by the moment.
WEAKNESSES Saw his accuracy dip in 2015. Made just 5-of-9 field goals from 41 yards and beyond. Will occasionally lose track of a kickoff and knock it out of bounds. Only attempted six kicks of 50-plus yards during his career. While quality of kickoffs have improved, still doesn't have a booming kickoff leg..

I stand corrected. That's almost exactly the league average across all positions where 30% of starters are first round picks and 47% of starters are first or second round picks.

IU not an OT factory: The most appearances by a Hoosiers tackle in the NFL are 146 games — recorded by Bob Skoronski, 5th-rounder in 1956.

IU is not really an anything factory in football, but even if it were, 146 appearances is a lot for an offensive lineman.

Carl Nassib to the Browns. He might turn out to be damn good, but his favorite move, lining up wide, isn't going to work so well against NFL tackles. Won the Lombardi Award this year

Analysis
Strengths Desires to succeed and is relentless in his pursuit. Former walk-*on who was told by Bill O'Brien (then-Penn State coach) that he needed to forget about playing pro football. Was offered a scholarship six months later. Long levers with big hands and comes off the ball with good upfield burst. Has straight*-line speed. Excellent feel for navigating around the pass rush arc with maximum efficiency. Uses subtle hand play and lateral body lean to turn the corner and get after the quarterback. Comes off the ball with proper pad level and brings hips into contact to try and maximize his strength. Uses proper arm extension, plus vision and a well-*timed shed to attack running backs in his gaps. Smart, instinctive defender who is able to diagnose plays quickly. National sack leader despite missing two games. Forced six fumbles this season.
Weaknesses One-year wonder. Not physical at the point of attack and can be mauled by power. Thin through legs and needs more mass across his frame for improved base and play strength. Not much twitch as an athlete. Average change of direction and finds himself out of position to make tackles. Lacking agility and ends up on ground too often. More of a grab and drag tackler than bodied*-up finisher. Missed 10 tackles in 2015 and had just four run stuffs. His motor causes him to fatigue in spots. Relies on "wide*-9" launch-point for favorable angle around the corner as rusher. Lacks speed*-to*-power rush ability and needs to add more counter moves.

BACKGROUND: A no-star athlete recruit out of high school, Fackrell received some attention from FCS-level schools, but no FBS offers until Utah State entered the picture late in the process – also an all-region basketball and volleyball player in high school. After redshirting on defense in 2011, he earned a starting role as a redshirt freshman and recorded 87 tackles, 8.0 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks to earn First Team All-WAC and Freshman All-America honors in 2012. Fackrell started all 14 games as a sophomore in 2013 and finished with 82 tackles, 13.0 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks, earning Second Team All-WAC honors. He tore the ACL in his right knee in the 2014 season opener, which put him on the shelf for the rest of the season. Fackrell returned healthy in 2015 as a senior and led the team with 15.0 tackles for loss, adding 82 tackles and 4.0 sacks to earn First Team All-MWC honors. He accepted his invitation to the 2016 Senior Bowl.

STRENGTHS: Tall, long-levered frame…worked hard to develop his muscle and limb strength – was only 200 pounds when he arrived at Utah State…loose athlete with smooth redirection skills and long strides to cover a lot of ground…lateral quickness to sidestep blocks or string plays to the outside…active rusher and quick to read, adjust his angle and close – blockers don’t have an answer for his stunts or loops in space…uses his length to engage and lock out…looks natural in reverse and has experience in coverage – offers athletic versatility and natural ballskills (eight passes defended and four interceptions in his career)…played on special teams coverages in college, including one blocked kick…humble and hard-working, but also feisty and competitive – singled out as the leader of the defense by his head coach…football junkie who already works and prepares like a professional…football bloodlines – father (Darrell) played defensive end at Utah State (and mother was a an Aggies cheerleader)…squeaky-clean boy scout off the field with a compassionate, mature nature – married (Elizabeth) with a one-year old daughter (Delaney)…highly productive with 253 tackles and 36.0 tackles for loss over 41 career starts.

WEAKNESSES: Lean-muscled body type with lanky bulk…not a forceful player at the point of attack and needs to develop his take-on strength to push through the shoulder of blockers…plays tall and too easily caught up in the crowd – quick hands, but shed technique and block recognition requires fine-tuning…needs to better break down and finish in space…long-legged mover, leading to choppy steps and lost balance in short-areas…inconsistent backfield vision and anticipation, which leads to overaggressive tendencies…older prospect and will be a 25-year old NFL rookie…missed all of the 2014 season due to an ACL tear in his right knee (Aug. 2014).

SUMMARY: A three-year starter, Fackrell lined up as an edge rusher and outside linebacker in Utah State’s 3-4 base, almost always standing up and playing on both the left and right sides of the formation – was a jack-of-all-trades defender who rushed and dropped in coverage. He is a tall, long-armed and flexible athlete with range and closing burst, doing his best work in space because he’s not a power player – has ballskills and would be a very intriguing tight end prospect. Fackrell can be too easily controlled at the point of attack and needs to develop his take-on strength to better dispose of blockers, but the competitive toughness is there. He has above average intangibles and you won’t find anyone who says something negative about him as a person. Fackrell isn’t an explosive player, but flows with great effort in pursuit and offers functional versatility to be an every down player, ideally suited in a 3-4 scheme.

My draft board for the Packers would look like this right now:

ILB Reggie Ragland
TE Hunter Henry
ILB Deion Jones
OG Cody Whitehair
OLB Kamalei Correa
OT Shon Coleman
ILB Joshua Perry
DE Chris Jones
DT Jarran Reed
DE Jonathan Bullard
CB Xavien Howard
DT A'Shawn Robinson
OLB Noah Spence
WR Sterling Shepard
DE Bronson Kaufusi
OLB Kyler Fackrell
DE Jihad Ward
CB Kendall Fuller
OLB Jordan Jenkins

No idea where Myles Jack and Jaylon Smith might go.

LOTS of defensive guys to love there

Packers needed serious help with pass rush and pass pro (tackle). I think they've addressed that (assuming they are any good)

OLB Fackrell Kyler ... Utah St. Mountain West

Pro Day Results

Short shuttle: 4.31 seconds ... 3-cone: 7.24 seconds ... Bench: 16 reps of 225 pounds

Draft Projection Round 3

NFL Comparison Connor Barwin

Bottom Line When it comes to the length and athleticism teams will look for off the edge, Fackrell will be one of the poster boys.

His field versatility, coverage talent and potential as a pass rusher could make him one of the fastest rising prospects in this draft and a future contender for a Pro Bowl nod.

He's active, he's a smart football player... if his athletic ability were commensurate with his football IQ he'd be a 1st round pick, but there's the rub - he's not athletic enough to get the edge, and not strong/powerful enough to bull rush.

There's a lot to be said for football IQ - but I value physical ability first. Physical ability gives a guy a higher ceiling; Fackrell ceiling isn't very high b/c his so limited physically. He will be a steady, unspectacular, hold the edge, and clean up the garbage kind of player.

Not what I was looking for.

15 tackles for loss and dropped into coverage quite a bit which reduces sack opportunities.

He's a finesse guy that plays in space a lot... I watched a couple game tapes of him, his assignments were consistent - played in space a lot, even lined up on the slot receiver from time to time.

Okay, fine... but what does that say about him as a point of attack defender and pass rusher?? Did we just draft a 6' 5" slot corner??

Here is Dane Bugler's overview on him... pretty much agree with this assessment from what I've watched of him.

IN OUR VIEW: A three-year starter, Fackrell lined up as an edge rusher and outside linebacker in Utah State's 3-4 base and was a jack-of-all-trades defender who rushed and dropped in coverage.

He is a tall, long-armed and flexible athlete with range and closing burst, doing his best work in space because he's not a power player. Fackrell can be too easily controlled at the point of attack and needs to develop his take-on strength to better dispose of blockers, but the competitive toughness is there. He has above average intangibles and you won't find anyone who says something negative about him as a person.

Fackrell isn't an explosive player, but floats with great effort in pursuit and offers functional versatility to be an every-down player, ideally suited in a 3-4 scheme.

Limited athleticism my ass

Blazing fast 1.61 10 yard dash. Consequently same as Matthews.

34.5" vert and 10' 01" broad jump. Also comparable to Clay Matthews.

Lots of length with 33 1/4" arms

He's got everything it takes.

I had him as one of the best coverage LBs in the draft. Makes me wonder if he can play nickel LB in place of Joe Thomas. I had him as a late 2nd/early 3rd round pick. There were a couple of other guys I had a bit higher, but all three picks were near the top of the available players on my board at the time, so it's hard to nitpick. In terms of my favorite picks for the Packers so far: I'd go Spriggs, Clark, Fackrell.

If it was going to be a need draft, I like it. Didn't reach or climb for weak positions. Traded up for a marginal first round talent in the middle of second. Didn't take an ILB just to take one in a draft that was weak at the top of that position. Got the third choice of D line help without moving up.

Still don't like need drafts (hello Jerel Worthy!) but this one doesn't seem egregious.

Good list, but maybe too short. It could be that none will be available when GB picks.

The Packers ended up getting two of the 20 (adding Spriggs) I listed at the start of the day. Not bad.

Note: I just missed copy and pasting Spriggs to the list. He would have been third on my list. I had Coleman 6th on the list, and you can see here that I had Spriggs comfortably higher on my board.

"Jack of all trades..." kind of guy?? Yeah, I'd agree with that.

Now how does that fit with the duties of an OLB in dunderdummy's 2-4?? Are you going to have Barrington and Ryan still on the inside?? Neither of them can rush the passer worth a damn... look what happened when Peppers dropped into coverage on that backbreaking play to Fitzgerald.

I just don't think Ted, and this regime in general, have a vision of what their defense should look like - like the fat kid in Moneyball said, "Like an island of misfit toys".

If they were concerned that he might only be a two down player, that's a weak concern. If he's a beast against the run, they'll thank him as he's running off the field on third and long. He looked like he has some pass rush when I saw video of him. He flat out looked dominant from what I saw. He must have a knee.
