Packers selected Stanford OT Kyle Murphy with the No. 200 overall pick of the 2016 NFL draft.
Murphy (6'6/305) was a two-year starter for the Cardinal, manning right tackle as a junior before protecting Kevin Hogan's blind side in his senior year. Murphy earned first-team All-Pac 12 accolades in 2015. A 'tweener NFL prospect, Murphy isn't quite a good enough athlete to excel on the left side and lacks ideal playing strength for a right tackle. NFL Draft Scout's Frank Cooney notes that Stanford T Kyle Murphy exhibits "the initial quickness and knee bend to make a successful switch inside, if necessary."
Last season, Murphy earned First Team All-Pac-12 honors despite the fact that it was his first season at left tackle. As Cooney and others have noted, he appeared to struggle in a shift to right tackle for the Senior Bowl. At the time, Rotoworld draft analyst Josh Norris speculated that the shift likely resulted in his uneven results. Cooney sees a move inside as, perhaps, Murphy's best bet for finding NFL success. Rotoworld's Josh Norris says Stanford T Kyle Murphy's struggles at the Senior Bowl may have to do with switching positions.
Murphy was a Cardinal left tackle last year. At the Senior Bowl, the 6-foot-7, 298-pounder was shifted to the right side. "Murphy, a player I liked off his games, is really struggling this week," Norris wrote. "But consider that Murphy is moving to the right side after spending the entire season on the left. His footwork, hand use, balance, weight distribution, etc. is all flipped. Murphy is not moving his feet on first contact and easily being beat around the edge. Perhaps this is one reason why."
