http://www.draftinsider.net/reports/2016/ILB/Beniquez-Brown

Beniquez Brown
School: Mississippi State
Position: ILB

Positive: Two-year starter who finished with a career-best 99 tackles last season while also blocking two kicks. Underrated run defending linebacker with starting potential at the next level. Remains disciplined with assignments, chases the action hard and wraps up tackling. Breaks down well, uses his hands to protect himself and relatively instinctive. Fires up the field filling gaps, displays speed in pursuit and the ability to get outside the numbers. Flows well to the action laterally, displays a closing burst and nicely redirects to the play. Remains disciplined with cover assignments.

Negative: Inefficient and often times over pursues the action. Easily knocked off balance by the first block. Average skill in coverage.

Analysis: Brown is a terrific two down defender that can also stay on the field in certain zone packages and is one of the more underrated linebackers in this draft.

Josh Hawkins
School: East Carolina
Position: CB

Positive: Two-year starter who finished with a career-best 5 INT's and 11 PBUs as a junior. Athletic cornerback prospect that flashes ball skills. Effective facing the action, shows good route recognition in zone coverage and quickly locates the ball in the air. Has a nice move to the throw, correctly times his pass defenses and physically beats down opponents to break up passes. Works to get off blocks and make plays against the run.

Negative: Lacks the great closing burst. Has questionable deep speed. Struggles making plays with his back to the ball.

Analysis: Hawkins offers solid size and can line up in dime situations where he's facing the action.

http://www.draftinsider.net/reports/2016/RB/Don-Jackson

Don Jackson
School: Nevada
Position: RB

Positive: Junior-college transfer who's started the past two seasons, posting a career-best 1082 yards rushing and 8 TDs as a senior. Short but creative ball carrier with next level potential. Runs with good lean, patient and sets up defenders then makes them miss. Quick footed, sidesteps piles and possesses the agility necessary to turn the corner. Sees the field, finds the running lanes and has a burst which he turns on in a single step. Terrific job helping the quarterback sell ball fakes, displays good blocking vision and a solid pass catcher out of the backfield.

Negative: Not a back that's going to pick up much yardage off initial contact. Cannot beat defenders into the open field or run to daylight.

Analysis: Productive the past two seasons, Jackson projects as a third-down back/situational runner on Sunday.

http://www.draftinsider.net/reports/2016/DE/Reggie-Gilbert

Reggie Gilbert
School: Arizona
Position: DE

Positive: Three-year starter that's lined up at both defensive tackle and defensive end. All-Conference selection as a senior after 41 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Somewhat underrated defensive line prospect with decent upside. Plays with balance, rarely off his feet and moves well laterally chasing the action. Uses his hands to protect himself, plays low to the ground and keeps his feet moving on contact. Holds his ground against blocks or plays off them altogether to get to the action.

Negative: Lacks bulk, easily knocked from the action by a single opponent or removed from the point. Possesses a poor closing burst.
Analysis: Gilbert was out of position at and in Arizona's three-man line last season but is a prospect who should only get better as he physically matures and adds strength to his frame

http://www.draftinsider.net/reports/2016/WR/Geronimo-Allison

Geronimo Allison
School: Illinois
Position: WR

Positive: Junior-college transfer that's started the past two seasons, leading Illinois in all receiving categories last year with 65 receptions, 882 yards and 3 TDs. Productive college receiver effective running after the catch. Comes back to the ball out of breaks, displays a sense of timing on receptions and gets vertical to highpoint the ball over opponents. Quickly releases off the line into pass routes, has a fluid style and lays out or extends to make the difficult reception. Works back to the quarterback to make himself an available target, finds a way to separate from defenders and uses his frame to protect the pass. Keeps the play in bounds running after the catch and shows short area quickness. Possesses soft hands and looks the pass in.

Negative: Loses out in battles. Drops some catchable throws on occasion. One speed receiver who lacks a deep burst.

Analysis: Allison has shown consistent progress the past two years and would be solid addition as a fifth receiver primarily used to run underneath routes.

http://www.draftinsider.net/reports/2016/WR/Devonte-Robinson

Devonte Robinson
School: Utah State
Position: WR

Positive: Junior-college transfer who's been a part-time starter the past two seasons. Posted career totals of 44 receptions, 552 yards and 4 TDs as a senior. Athletic pass catcher who displays flashes of ability. Quick route runner, fires into breaks and stays low on exit, positioning himself to make the reception. Extends his hands and nicely makes the reception on crossing patterns. Easily adjusts to the errant throw and effectively makes the over the shoulder reception downfield. Uses the sidelines well.

Negative: Displays poor focus and concentration. Takes his eyes off the ball before he's made the catch and drops catchable throws.

Analysis: Robinson possesses the size and speed to lineup as a 4th or 5th receiver at the next level but must polish his game and start to pay attention to the details of his position.

http://www.draftinsider.net/reports/2016/TE/David-Grinnage

David Grinnage
School: North Carolina State
Position: TE

Positive: Junior totals included 25 receptions, 290 yards and 3 TDs. Posted 5 touchdowns the Rotated into the starting lineup since his freshman season. Large tight end prospect with an unpolished game. Offers the quarterback a nice target, uses his frame to shield away defenders and works to make himself an available target. Nicely adjusts to the errant throw and displays solid focus as well as concentration.

Negative: Limited speed and not a downfield threat. Does not play with much balance. Not a natural hand catcher and lets the ball get inside him.

Analysis: Grinnage showed flashes of ability since his freshman season but never truly put a complete game together. He's a size prospect who must improve every aspect of his game to make it out of camp this August.

I didn't evaluate Kentrell Brice, but I've heard some good things about him.

He tested well

5'11" 200, 4.44 40, 4.40 shuttle, 7.60 3 cone, 42" vertical, 133" broad jump

Kind of weird numbers. He's a little short, great speed for safety, ridiculous vertical and broad jump (Morgan Burnett-like numbers), but below average shuttle and 3 cone. Apparently, he's explosive but stiff. The only other guys I evaluated were WR Allison, TE Grinnage, and ILB Brown. I didn't like Grinnage. Terrible athlete and not even that good of a bloker. I thought Allison was borderline draftable. Solid UDFA at a position where he has little chance to make it. Brown was a solid all around player in college, but he's small and doesn't have enough athleticism to make up for it at the pro level.

I wonder if the punter is a legit threat to Masthay.

Peter Mortell, P, Minnesota: 5-11, 203, no 40. Played at Green Bay Notre Dame. Three-year starter with career average of 44.0, a school record.

The school record is more impressive now that Minnesota plays outdoors.

Nice article about him http://www.thedailygopher.com/2016/4/30/11546202/minnesota-ounter-peter-mortell-green-bay-packers

Masthay would seem to be vulnerable - he got outpunted last year but the guy couldn't hold. This guy can - and apparently knows how to make the kicker smile.

Wow, there are some very impressive UDFA's signed yesterday. Geronimo Allison will be interesting to watch. Please let him stay healthy during TC. Lately it seems like late round or UDFA WR's seem to get hurt early in camp and then basically have no shot.

Kentrell Brice looks like an enforcer at Safety.

Josh Hawkins looks like he has ball skills and speed to burn.

Brandon Burks is in the mold of a DuJuan Harris body type (both from Troy). Find his Pro Day workout. Dude did 20 or 21 reps on the bench and had a 37 inch vertical. Super athletic. Could be a change of pace back, but can he pick up the blitz?

There were others who stood out too. Should bring some good competition to TC.

(We don't call ours Stubby for nothing.) Maybe all these scouts are the type that can't or won't think out of the box. Hang time is not that crucial a yardstick when a guy is running a few steps before he even kicks the ball and can directional punt. It seems from the film that Hackett's coverage team usually had more than enough time to get downfield.

A question I don't know the answer to:

Are the "man downfield" rules during a punt the same in the NFL and college? That could explain differences in coverage and hang time requirements.

Funny quote by Hackett...evidently he also has a good sense of humor:

"The main reason I'm playing this sport is because deep down, I'm fat and I don't like running very far," Hackett told ESPN's Chris Fowler during a college football awards show. "So I'm running 20-odd yards on and 20-odd yards off, and that's about all I got for you."

In college, once the ball is snapped, everyone can go downfield. Don't need the hang time that the NFL needs. Also, that would be why rugby-style punters are liked as they take an extra second or so to get the ball off enabling the coverage team to get further downfield.

I suspected that might be the case. It explains a lot about very effective college punters who just don't transition well into the NFL.

By draft day, the sites I trust had him as a 7th round pick or UDFA. The encouraging thing is that McGinn is one of the sources that had him as draftable. McGinn had him as the #17 ILB. He tested poorly at the combine, and he's not very big. Then again, a lot of ILBs in this draft tested poorly. Reggie Ragland, Tyler Matakevich, Scooby Wright, Stephen Daniels, and Kentrell Brothers are tested as poorly, but most of those other guys have the size advantage on Brown.

For what it's worth, I was driving late at night a few weeks ago and stumbled across a sports program on the radio... they were talking with a "former scout" (don't know who it was) about "sleepers" in the draft and he mentioned Callahan. Said the kid had a live arm, great touch and anticipation... said he had a real chance to stick on an NFL roster. I found a clip of him on youtube, and he sure looked like he could fling a ball.

Anyone have any info on him?? Saw he was listed at 6'1, 215 lbs, and threw for a ton of yds and TDs at the lower levels.

A picture (or moving pictures) is worth a thousand words. Can someone here break down what you see from Callahan in these highlights? The first few throws in the video show off a really nice, accurate deep ball. Seems to drop it in a basket, with decent coverage from the D. He seems to trust his arm to get the ball to his receiver, even in contested spaces. Also seems to have some scrambling ability as well.

Does he dominate enough at this level to make you impressed with his talent relative to competition?

Babb was never fully given a chance to compete for the starting job, what with Rodgers being handed the job after Favre left and TT drafting Brohm. His talent was greatly under-appreciated.

Do you think Callahan is better than B.J. Coleman or T.J. Rubley or any other Packer's backup QB who went with his initials?

I was intrigued by how the offense he ran looked like the Packer offense. Shotgun, vertical routes, ball coming out fast, accurate throws. Callahan must have been pretty competent at the pre-snap read to get the ball out like that. I also like his athleticism, but it's just a highlight reel. I am looking forward to some pre-season fourth quarters now.

Two guys may not have passed the physical:

Green Bay - The Packers announced the signing of 19 undrafted rookies, two fewer than the Journal Sentinel had reported as agreeing to terms this past week.

Two of the players - Georgia Tech safety Demond Smith and Alcorn State cornerback Warren Gatewood -- were not on the list and not at practice Friday morning.

Typically, it means that there was an injury concern the Packers had and so they voided the agreement.

Another, free agent who wasn't announced was Troy running back Brandon Burks. However, Burks is attending graduation and isn't expected in town until Sunday. The Packers don't announce signings until the player passes his physical, so once Burks does so, the team will announce his signing.

The Packers will only be down one player because they signed undrafted free agent Jacob Flores, a 6-3, 300-pound center from Dartmouth.

Same article from Spoon.

Breaking: GFL Standout WR Patrick Donahue will workout with the Packers at their mini camp

I'm very interested to know how this guy does over the weekend. His highlight reel from the German league was impressive. Hey, Boykin got an offer from rookie mini-camp weekend.

Could always use some more speedy players in the mix.

Brandon Burks, if he's the guy I'm thinking about, would be that third down speedster dude that we are all lathering for.

The solution is, of course, to not get to third down.

The solution actually is to pass it to RR out in the flat or do a Ripkowski FB dive (since Kuhn is gone).

+1

Run the ball well, win the down and distance battle, will open the play book and makes the offense harder to defend, less predictable.

McCarthy agrees. I take it as self evident that drive has failed

That was the only video I could find of him too... I agree with the scout, he looks to have a live arm and great touch.

He's an interesting signing.

Thanks for the video.

Comment woodbuck27:

Packer QB Prospect Joe Callahan is 6' 1" Tall and weighs 216 lbs RE: LINK above.

He has a solid accurate arm and good vision. He's not fast (a 4.9 - 5.08... 40 ) yet athletic and scrambles well. He's instinctive and patient and can find a play with his arm or feet when under pressure.

" In case you missed my D3 Football Preseason All-American list, I’m pretty high on Joe Callahan. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound senior from Wesley is poised to have another stellar season, following another one last year. The gunslinger amassed the second most yards of offense (4,190) and touchdowns (46) in the nation, which put him right behind Mount Union’s Kevin Burke (4,412 and 52). He also completed 300-of-463 passes for a stellar passing efficiency rating of 169.3 and led the nation with 10 games of over 300 passing yards. The kid is a senior this year, and in the high-powered Wesley offense? All bets are off. "

Division III standout QB Joe Callahan among Packers' 19 undrafted rookies

May 6, 2016

Rob Demovsky ... ESPN Staff Writer

" Joe Callahan, QB, Wesley College (6-1, 216): Non-combine invitee who made a pre-draft visit to the Packers. Won the Gagliardi Trophy given best football player in Division III. Became the only D-III quarterback to throw for 5,000 yards in a single season (he threw for 5,036). He also threw 55 touchdowns last season, the second most in D-III history."

Comment woodbuck27:

He may not become a Packer but he would do just fine in the CFL. The only thing I see that might preclude him from making the NFL is his size.I like his athleticism and instincts to play the position. His vision and focus is impressive.

Okay, my favorite part of the Joe Callahan video is about at the 33 second mark, where he's in the shotgun and he fakes a handoff to . . . nobody, since no one is within about six yards of him.

But what the hell. Maybe he'll be a practice squad guy they can develop into a good backup for when they trade Aaron Rodgers in two years and go on to Brett Hundley as their next HOF QB.

Kind of intrigued by Alstevis Squirewell beyond his name. New fullback started 26 games at defensive tackle for Newberry.

@PackerReport Was all-state FB in high school, averaged 10 yards a carry as a sr. Legit 4.6 speed, can probably squat a bus, super good guy

The creator's of the all those McDonald's characters from the 70's must have been in an altered state.

Because the Internet, here is a McDonald's wiki that made me laugh because someone actually took this seriously enough to make it. I do not recall Grimace's early flirtation with the dark side.

I think the Grimace is flipping someone off in that picture. With only three fingers, he is clearly holding up the middle one.

An article on Geromino, might turn out but obviously not a bright kid. These two paragraphs stood out

But Allison was ineligible to play as a sophomore because of academics. His junior season was wiped away for the same reason

I just kind of wanted to play ball, not knowing that a GPA was a requirement to play ball. That was a struggle for me throughout high school. It took me a minute to own up and realize that.”

So he wasn't allowed to play for two years and still didn't catch on that he had to work on academics???
