Hornung admits to wearing a leather helmet in college, plastic Riddell as a pro. Claims Riddell knew enough way back then to have warned him.

This seems like a hard one to prove. Seems like Riddell can argue they were a vast improvement over what he wore in college, and were probably at the leading edge of the technology at the time.

Prolly looked like a good gamble to the Horn.

While skull fractures and bleeding were a cause for concern with previous helmets, I am not sure hard shell plastic helmets, as it came to be used, have really had a net positive impact except for keeping players in the game (because they are not bleeding or fractured). It mainly has moved the risk of the collision forward in time.

Mainly, I blame the Steelers.

And to think that all those years Hornung thought he was just hung over.
