Roster reduction is underway for the #Packers. CB Warren Gatewood and QB Marquise Williams were released today, according to league sources.

I think Williams deserves another look on PS. But probably not before Callahan.

If Lane Taylor continues to draw a check it will be a failure of depth that he wasn't replaced.

I agree. It seems they value experience over potential. I thought Price showed more than Ringo but it appears they're going with the experience and pushing potential to the PS.

Sometimes Ted goes with the guy least likely to get signed off waivers to stock the PS. That way Ted gets to have his cake (keep the vet) and eat it too (keep the youngster). It also makes the coaches happy they have the experience.

Fritz

Wait, wait. I thought the bitching was that Ted always kept the kids and didn't value vets enough, thus driving the coaches mad. When did this narrative change? Or are you just a renegade?

The vets he loses tend to be older and more expensive than Ringo. But in this case, he hopefully got to keep both.

EDIT: added hopefully. Hopefully this isn't a whammy.

Nice. He's off the bubble list. I'd say there are a few more who could realistically be removed too (Gunter, Brice, Barrington, Janis) but we'll wait a bit longer to see if Teddy pulls a trade or something.

I think only one of Murphy or Taylor stick. I also think neither one is deserving. Murphy can't handle NFL edge speed yet and Taylor has somehow lost all ability to move in any lateral direction since last year. Also seemingly lost the ability to stand still and refrain from grabbing opponents outside torso area.

Back-up OL - Spriggs, Barclay and someone not currently on the roster perhaps... Not sure you can count on Linsley down the road this year. Twice-torn hammy? Not good.

Geronimo appears to be a your typical preseason tease, you know, like the Boykins, the Gurleys, and the such. If he makes the team, great; underdog stories with happy endings are an excellent source of morale enhancement. If not? Not much of a loss.

vince

Not me. He's a big reliable target which has value but I'd say his ceiling is pretty low. IMO - Reliable possession receiver who will play unspectacularly in the league for many years - probably move around a lot. #3 receiver tops

Six UDFA rookies to go with all six draftpicks. That's gotta be historically significant.

Captain Obvious expresses concern over the OL depth. The rest of the team looks really complete - especially when Pennel returns in a month.

12 DB's and 3 ILB's.

I think we'll see a lot of Burnett, Hyde and Evans (to the extent he sees the field) playing the new hybrid role up in the box.

Davis to IR. Add a long snapper back in. What's the speculation on the two safeties? I don't see any of that group going anywhere.

It would be great if Burks and/or Murphy get upgraded and those two are demoted but those are net zero to the positions....

A bunch of fast and aggressive ST guys for the foreseeable future, plus I think we're seeing some evolution toward a new defensive wrinkle with LB/S tweeners playing up in run support, slot/inside zone pass defenders. blitzers and overall playmakers swarming to the ball. A bunch of these guys have skills to fit that bill.

12DBs though? I know it's a pass happy league, but wow.

Teams have now gone beyond dime defenses, and use 7 DBs at one time. We might start seeing 8 or 9 DBs active on game days. Having 10-12 on the roster may become the norm.

Hyde will be a free agent next year. He brings a lot of versatility to the team, but the Packers now potentially have his replacements at CB, S, punt return and kickoff return if they decide to let him go.

Burnett and Shields will be free agents after the 2017 season. Both have had more than their shares of injuries. I doubt either will see another GB contract, and if the young guys work out, one or both of Shields and Burnett could be gone next year. If Shields holds true to form, he will miss at least a couple games this year. Do we even know if Burnett is ready to play now?

Banjo is there for STs and is very replaceable otherwise.

If a team finds DBs they think have shots at being capable starters, they really have to keep them. GB may have even more reasons to do so than some other teams.

I expect Davis or Dorleant will go on IR to make room. Either would then be eligible for recall if needed. Absent injuries to others, neither is likely to be active on game days anyway, so stashing one on IR makes roster sense. Both looked to have significant injuries, especially Davis.

They no longer have to designate a player for return, they can just use it on any eligible IR'd player they decide . My point was that they can use it for them if they need to later in the season if they lose a bunch of WRs or DBs.

Is he fast? What's his speed rating on Madden? I hope he's fast.

They dumped Burks to get him on the roster and Burks is not, if Packer Twitter is to be believed, a candidate for the PS.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Packers gave Blake Muir a tryout on Sunday.

The former 49er is an Australian native, who played college football at Baylor. He was signed by the 49ers after going undrafted.
