McCarthy: Sam (Shields) is improving. Break was good for him. Won't practice today. All inactives except Sam & Cook will do something today.

Bob is not at the press conference, he is traveling to meet Bobby April at a Stuckey's to try to convince him to commit to the Packers.

Guess I'm out of the loop.

What's the explanation for the dig at McGinn and Bobby April?

What's the explanation for the dig at McGinn and Bobby April?

McGinn had an article stating that hiring Zook was a mistake when Bobby April and a couple others were available:

Do you think McGinn ever walks through the locker room? I bet Zooker would be ordering the code red if he did.

Guess I'm out of the loop.

What's the explanation for the dig at McGinn and Bobby April?

McGinn has critiqued several of McCarthy's hires, hinting they are hired out of friendship and loyalty and not qualifications. In some cases, Slocum, he seemed right on target. On others, dumping Bob Sanders, McGinn failed to stick up for reputation and experience (Capers over Sanders) and accused McCarthy of embarrassing the franchise by blaming lieutenants.

But special teams have been a hobby horse of his for long before that. The only hire I remembered him cheering was John Bonamego, who had a sterling reputation some years back and was hired by Sherman. JB was a success by every measure McGinn likes to cite, Rich Gosselin's yearly rankings, reputation among sources and League wide rankings of punting and kicking units by yardage/average.

However, Bonamego's units struggled, providing a two year glimpse into the talent versus coaching debate.

This is a case of Bob hitting on an important (hiring of assistants) point but being unable to discern what leads to success.

The Gints don't have much, if any, run game, but their one-dimension can be special. I hope they have Burnett back to help in the secondary. They really need to make Eli move in the pocket and hit him early and often. Their secondary is pretty banged up, so that will be a plus for the Packer offense.

Damarious Randall dropped out of practice and returned with his thumb taped. He left again, came back with no tape and sat out, no helmet.

If the Giants team that showed up last night in MN shows up in GB on Sun night, we should kick the snot out of them. Giants were disorganized on both sides of the ball.

the answer for obj has been laid out for the league in the last several games. play him tight, play him physical, and he ends up doing more harm than good for his team.
so...expect him to go off on the Packers because we don't play that style of pass d. we let the opposition run free. are the Packers dbs incapable of playing this way or is it on the coaching staff or both. either way if things don't change back there expect more of the same. making players of the week out of guys you've never heard of.
the giants don't have a threatening running game so the Packers need to sell-out on pass d.

Especially considering we're coming off a bye week and the Giants played Monday night. ...On the other hand, Manning was subjected to a hellacious pass rush while Bradford not so much. Manning was throwing the ball into the dirt after 1 second. If we give Manning time to throw we could be in for a long night.

I believe our lack of aggression by our DBs is both coaching and the type of players we have. Of course it does seem like if we sneeze on a WR we get flagged for holding or PI...

We do possess a decent pass rush especially with Clay, D. Jones and Guion returning. It is our back end and our tendency to leave the middle of the field wide open is what kills us...

So, for the scheme-niks here, what exactly is it that Packers are doing, or not doing in the secondary that is allowing the big plays? Is it schematic? Is it play calling? Is it blown coverage? Frustrating to think back to the MN game, and the front seven did their job, but the back end had no answers, and was consistently getting torched.

Do you place that at Capers feet, are the players blowing coverages?

You're not wrong. Joe just has a bee in his mailbag. Giants have excellent receivers and you inspired me to look at stats for packer passing defense.
http://www.espn.com/nfl/statistics/team/_/stat/passing/position/defense

Only the Jets are giving up more yards per passing attempt. They don't intercept passes. They are near worst in the league in completion percentage. The one stat they are doing well in is getting sacks.

I am unthrilled by the Giants game. I hate night games. The Giants are floundering and playing on a short week. The game is opposite a presidential debate. I'm much more interested in seeing the Cowboys next week.

It's the second-year draftees, Randall and Rollins, who were the primary reason people were talking up the secondary, but are the reason the secondary has been sucking wind so far. I'm getting a little nervous about Randall - when I read the comments he makes, he's starting to sound like one of those defensive (and I don't mean that in a literal or a good way) players who says he'll take responsibility while blaming his untied shoes. I'm not liking how his attitude seems to be developing, and I wonder if it's tied to the lack of development of his football skills. I think I read something he said about needing to start to prepare for other teams' #2 receivers as he did for #1 receivers. Really? You just figured that out?

Clayish
10-06-2016, 07:49 AM
Secondary has to step up in this one. Obviously have to try and shutdown OBJ at all costs and make sure to keep an eye out for that rookie.

The Giants secondary is banged up as well, and we need Aaron and the receivers to take advantage of that. Very winnable game.

That said, ever been to a Mike Sherman-coached HS football game? If you have, you most certainly have sat on one of those stinky metal bleachers.

Unless your seat is inside some box or way back up there yonder where players look like ants, you most certainly will be sitting on some stinky metal bleacher at Lambeau. Uncomfortable as fucking a fat lady, even if you're not sitting between 2 fat guys.

$300 M of tax payers' hard-earned bucks was used to renovate the Field, and they won't even get rid of the old, stinky metal bleachers and instill single seats throughout! :x

btw: Since Conn is boring, you won't be disappointed with dull and dark Green Bay. Absolutely nothing to do in Green Bay, 'cept maybe feed the "Redskins" at their casinos (Note: Even after you've fed 'em Redskins plenty of your hard-earned bucks, they'd still treat you like dirt.)

I'm a little bit worried about our corners also. However, I have a fairly low opinion of Eli Manning in terms of decision making - kinda Cutler light without the ability to run. I like Rollins better than Randall, and I like Gunter better than either R and R. On offense, I'd love to see a healthy dose of Jeff Janis, but I'm not holding my breath - McCarthy's damn stubbornness and all. I'd also love to see the Packers unleash a wild pass-first attack, but there again, I'm not holding my breath - McCarthy's damn stubbornness and all.

I think the Packers win, but not nearly as comfortably as they should/would if they really maximized things.

I can't say the DBs were great. Several times, Giant receivers were WIDE OPEN, but Manning was about as accurate as Rodgers last night. At least Eli had an excuse, because pass rushers were in his grill constantly. I'm not sure why Rodgers couldn't make an easy 10 yard pass on the numbers to anyone when he could sit in the pocket for 4-5 seconds just about every time he dropped back to pass.
