The receiver group out there now cannot beat man to man except Nelson on some routes. He needs to go back to multiple personnel of first drive.

Nah that worked and they have a lead to "protect".

I swear Stubby can't get out of his own way. I'll never understand why he's so quick to abandon stuff that's working. I'm of the belief that you keep doing it over and over until the other team proves they can adjust/stop it and then you counter their adjustment. I can never imagine Lombardi abandoning the power sweep when they we're running people's asses over with it play after play.

Jordy didn't have that great a night. He had a couple of nice catches but a couple of drops and one bounced off his hands for a Gmen INT.

Pugger

For all the time Rodgers had to throw, it didn't seem like our WR's were getting much separation.

IMO this is a major problem for us and why our offense sputters at times.

I thought all of our O linemen had a good night. NY paid a lot of $$ for those pass rushers and Rodgers had all day back there. Too bad our WRs stink at getting separation.

I'm really coming to this conclusion as well. If the DB doesn't make a mistake, the Packers WRs are not open. The next time Devante Adams comes back and fights for a pass will be the first time. I'm about 90% on board with Bretsky about this guy. Tons of talent and no heart.

texaspackerbacker
10-10-2016, 08:15 AM
I can't type fast enough to post during the game and still follow it good, so I'll give my observations now.

As I predicted, a win but we didn't maximize things. I was a lot more pleased with McCarthy's play calling - early especially but really most of the game - in terms of passing on early downs and setting up the run. I was especially pleased with my favorite target to criticize: our O Line. They played their ass off most of the game both in pass protection and run blocking. Lacy ran like a beast; I hope the ankle doesn't slow him down in future games. Aaron Rodgers didn't have his best night, but I'll take him on an off night over just about anybody else at their best. Yeah, the line blocked for him a lot better than usual, but how about that escapability. Nelson made a couple of great catches, but generally he played like crap. He isn't running like before the injury, and no excuse for the 4 or whatever drops. Another guy I like to criticize, Davante Adams, was damn good tonight, although he reverted a few times. Hard to tell if he ran bad patterns or Rodgers was just off target several times. I'm surprised to see so much criticism of Starks in here. I thought he had pretty good burst and cuts. He was a step or so away from a big gainer a couple of times. They need to keep using Ripkowski instead of a TE at FB. This was a damn good Giant defense that we beat up on; Their DBs may have been depleted, but the ones they played did damn good in coverage. Things could have been better yet, but I'm satisfied.

On defense, this was another Capers gem, and a LOT of players executed excellently. Our DBs almost shut down Beckham, and they totally shut down Cruz and Shepherd, two damn good WRs. I really like Rollins' athleticism and Gunter's coverage instinct or whatever, and Hyde was great. Our D Line - whoever was rotated in - did a great job of pressuring Eli, and they did great stopping the run. I saw the Giants O Line run right over the Cowboys D a few weeks ago; They couldn't budge our guys. Martinez and Ryan did good against the run, but they let a mediocre TE get deep on them a couple of times.

Who the hell made the decision to pick up this all out piece of crap punter over Masthay and Mortell? Kickoff coverage kinda sucked too. Slocum's fault? Somebody needs to clean it up.

It seems like the league is consciously trying to take away that Packer advantage of free plays with quick whistles on off sides and that illegal shift thing when they hurry up before the opponent gets its players off the field.

All in all, we made a good opponent look kinda bad. The Packers were ragged at times, but they fixed a lot of things.

I said this in the Banjo string, I mean thread. :-) Is it the route concepts, or the execution of the route concepts. If we all agree that tonight A-Rod had enough time on many drop backs to survey and run through the normal progression of the play called, but ended up having to do scramble drill, even with decent protection. Is that more because of the isolation routes being stale and predictable to the defense, is it the lack of talent at WR to win in the route concepts, is it Rodgers inaccuracies on plays where there isn't even that much pressure, or is it a combo?

HarveyWallbangers
10-10-2016, 09:11 AM
Mostly, it was Rodgers off on short throws (e.g. screens) and drops. Jordy must have dropped four balls last night (it may have been the worst game of his career), including a couple of big plays and one that turned into an interception. Richard Rodgers dropped a TD. Kind of a weird night. Outside of that and the punter, most of the units had a good night.

"I’ll tell you right now, I’m pretty sure if I catch my balls it’s a whole different story," Nelson said. "It’s just making the most of your opportunities."

ThunderDan
10-10-2016, 09:40 AM
The Packers dominated the Giants last night at Lambeau. Costly turnovers, shitty short passing, drops by receivers and the worst punting I have seen in a game kept it close. This should have been in the 34-10 range for a final score.

The Packer D dominated the Giants O. They could only score FGs on short fields until the last 5 minutes of the game.

The Packer O shot themselves in the foot over and over. We had 250 yards of offense in the 1st half and only put up 17 points that should have been 14 if not for a strip sack by Fackrell.

Maxie the Taxi
10-10-2016, 09:41 AM
Jordy is not near all the way back. I remember a particular play where the camera followed him running a route. He jogged straight downfield, did some kind of weak stutter-step, cut to the left and didn't fool anyone. The DB stayed with him step-by-step. I got the feeling Jordy doesn't trust his knee to make his usual quick and hard cuts with acceleration. That's what used to give him separation.

As for Cobb, he was his old, fearless self -- a fantastic 1st down machine. IMO the game's MVP.

Holy Fackrell was terrifying a diminished opponent, but he looked pretty legit on a speed rush. He develops a counter to that and watch out.

Don't forget Adams deciding to not catch a ball he was perfectly in position to catch because he thought someone was behind him.

Kickoff coverage was not good to go along with punter. Lotta missed tackles. Banjo getting hurt led to at least two missed tackles on next two kicks. Kinda odd since his backups had gotten reps while he was banged up earlier.

I don't have statistics to back this up, but my impression was that Stubby ash-canned -- for the most part -- his no huddle offense. Arod was under center a good part of the game as well. I also noticed more motion and two men in the backfield sets. Stubby also seemed more willing to use play action and misdirection. This is good IMO. Plus, I have to say his game management in the last three minutes was improved, showing a willingness to be aggressive with the pass to earn 1st down and close out the game.

Is it possible that this is done deliberately, to set up a later route? I know d-linemen and pass rushers do this all the time - give them a slow-mo look a few times to lull the blocker into thinking that's your speed - then at a key moment, you blow by them.

Or maybe not. Maybe Jordy said it best:

"'I’ll tell you right now, I’m pretty sure if I grab my balls it’s a whole different story,'" Nelson said."

And isn't that the truth for all guys, anyway?

He definitely went with more options and personnel groups, Ripper included.

But you will notice that the second half featured a LOT of 11 personnel (1RB, 1TE, 3 WR) and the no huddle returned with poor results.

I also noticed more motion and two men in the backfield sets. Stubby also seemed more willing to use play action and misdirection. This is good IMO. Plus, I have to say his game management in the last three minutes was improved, showing a willingness to be aggressive with the pass to earn 1st down and close out the game.

And you guys keep telling me Stubby is too stubborn to change his game plans. ;-)

I see what you did there...

And you guys keep telling me Stubby is too stubborn to change his game plans. ;-)Sometimes you have to hit a mule over the head with a 2x4 in order to get his attention. :-)

As I recall, Jordy was the primary target on that play. My point is he just looks tentative on his cuts and acceleration.

This I did not know. I was just casting about for explanations, and looking for a way to re-cast Jordy's quote.
