call_me_ishmael has it first, but here is the thread.

Haven't read who is getting the boot. My guess is Pipkins, but will Ted actually carry seven lineman?

Will wist get to see a 3 or 4 DL alignment this year on passing downs?

The #Packers want Dial to play role similar to Letroy Guion. The 6-5, 318-pound Dial can play nose, end or 3-technique.

I am a bit surprised he's going to be on the nose at 6' 5", but I cannot recall seeing him play, so OK.

#Packers releasing DL Christian Ringo to make room on their 53 for Quinton Dial, per source. They can put him on PS if he clears waivers.

#Packers swapping run-stopping and nose tackle ability for DT pass rush. They will be counting on Montravius Adams for latter at some point

Its Dial because they need an NT backup to Clark. They like Dial over Price. Hope to get Ringo on PS.

I hope this guy is good. I have absolutely no memory of this player. I've lost a lot of my Niner hate since Harbaugh split.

At this late a juncture, Ringo ought to make PS, if that's a big deal.

Ringo is PS eligible right? Man I thought for sure Adams would go to IR but must be a good sign that his foot is healing nicely.

After a strong preseason don't know if he clears waivers though

I feel bad for Ringo, he was always overshadowed by John, Paul...I mean, he played really well in the preseason and had earned a spot on the roster.

Price was better than ringo... ringo offered nothing.

Good article, I'm getting more excited about this defense everyday.

I think Ringo looked decent but does not have ideal size. He will probably make it through waivers simply based on timing. The claims would get resolved on Weds and he'd be useless for Sunday.

I think Ringo might be a better fit as an under tackle in a 4-3. Might need someone to get hurt to get a job.

I don't know a darn thing about this guy, but he sure looks the part, and from doing a quick 5-min browsing of his social media he does seem like a Packer person.

I like that the Packers are committed to getting bigger and faster. Everybody says it's a finesse and speed game now but I'm not so sure. Those 2012-2014 Niners/Seahawks/Giants teams would knock the snot out of the 2016 Falcons/Packers/Cowboys.

That's right from the stuff I saw and I'm thinking DL Christian Ringo might very well get picked up.

Bengals claimed Ringo

Wait, I'm confused. For years I complained that Ted never signed veteran free agent help because he didn't want to give up on *potential* future playmakers. Cost us a couple SB's, for sure.

But dammit, I'm mad he gave up on a good young pass rusher just to sign someone else's reject. Watch Ringo turn into a sack machine in Cinci.

I hate TT.

Love,
Tank

Dials’ pay of $775,001 is $1 above the league minimum for a fifth-year pro.

By going over the minimum, the Packers now have the freedom to sign him to an extension before the new league year in March, but it also means the full amount will count on the salary cap instead of getting the minimum-salary benefit.

Today I learned another nuance of minimum salary.

Today I learned another nuance of minimum salary.

Makes me think they are discussing a longer term contract already. Dial was in the second year of a 3yr/$12M+ contract with the 49ers. He was a starter last year, and by all reports a capable one, who just didn't fit their new scheme. Doesn't seem like the kind of a player who would have to take the risk by signing a one year, minimum salary contract; unless it was done as a quick and dirty way to get him on the filed immediately while they work out a longer term deal. He signed quite quickly.

On one hand, the Packers aren't normally overly-concerned about fairly paid players hitting free agency. On the other hand, they often "upgrade" players who are underpaid for the value to the team.

It seems like the only reason for GB to go $1 over and lose the benefit of a minimum wage contract is because they are very much interested in a longer term deal sometime soon; and the only reason for Dial to sign such a cheap deal now, while risking a significant injury, is because he expects a signing bonus and extension soon.

Interesting thoughts...it sounds like they needed/wanted a backup NT and think he can do it. Price and Guion were the only ones who could have and both are gone. I'm thinking if he proves he can play all along the DLine including NT they'll give him a Guion type contract. Gotta have guys who can keep Burnett/Jones clean when they play Nitro.

Another interesting aspect to this regards salary guarantees. Apparently, his 2017 salary ($1.5M) was fully guaranteed as of April 1. Often, those types of guarantees include offsets. If the player is released, the 49ers guaranteed payment to him is offset by any 2017 salary received from another team. By signing for the minimum with GB, and then signing a typical extension with bonuses and increased salaries for subsequent years, he might get to keep more from the 49ers while the Packers in total will pay what they think he is worth over the total term of the initial one year contract plus the extension.
