Ricky Jean Francois is being released by the Packers according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. They gave him a $250,000 signing bonus this offseason as part of a one-year, $2 million deal. Now, 16/17ths of his $1.25 million base salary is wiped off their books.

Jean-Francois is a vested veteran. Isn't his salary guaranteed by having been on the week 1 roster?

I wonder if this means Adams is ready to play, Lowry is 100%, etc.?

Wait a sec...if they cut Gunter AND Francois, does this mean they've found out that Brooks's concussion is serious, so they're calling up Gilbert?

Rob Demovsky
ESPN Staff Writer

Because he was on the roster Week 1, Ricky Jean Francois can still collect the rest of his $1.25 million base salary via the one-time veteran termination pay rule. The only thing the Packers save on is his weekly roster bonuses, which had $375,000 of the $400,000 left available..

BREAKING: Packers Release DB to Make Room for Suspended Wide Receiver's Return

" Wide receiver Geronimo Allison is set to return from suspension this week and reclaim his spot on the roster.

In order to supplement the move, the Packers have cut ties with cornerback LaDarius Gunter, hours after launching Ricky Jean Francois out of Green Bay."

Rob Demovsky ✔@RobDemovsky

The Packers also have released CB LaDarius Gunter. That's the official move to make room for Geronimo Allison. http://www.espn.com/espn/now?nowId=21-40001449-4 … 5:23 PM - Sep 12, 2017

Interesting that JSO reports Jean Francois having been released, but the Packer website still includes him on the roster. The Packers generally update the website very quickly, and they have Gunter off and Allison on, but also still include Jean Francois.

It was not a smart move IMO. Say what you want about Gunter being too slow, but he did a damn good job last year against all but a couple of the very best WRs. Randall and Rollins and maybe House are doing better this year. Hopefully they all stay healthy - what are the odds of that? I like Hawkins, but at this stage of his career, he isn't nearly as good as Gunter. Instead we got Pankey - another big clod who couldn't block anybody in the preseason, even the scrubs of other teams.

Just watch, Gunter will resurface as a decent Corner for somebody.

hoosier

Turnover at bottom of roster is usually not detrimental to a team's season and most often a good sign: that the GM is looking to improve the team. Gunter was way down on the depth chart for a reason. If Spriggs cannot go they need to be able to dress a third tackle. In a few weeks Pankey may be replaced by someone else who fills a momentary need. No biggy.

That's the spirit! Never say die. I'm sure Gunter will latch on to some depleted roster before the season is over. Maybe Belicheat will convert him to a safety and he'll make the pro bowl.

Here's the thing that concerns me: We only have 5 defensive linemen on the current roster. One or two guys get nicked up, and we suddenly very short across the front.

10 offensive linemen are now on the roster unincluding Barclay on IR.

hoosier
09-13-2017, 01:13 PM
There are five on the roster and only two will be on the field at a time. Depth is a little precarious until Adams is ready to play, but assuming that happens fairly quickly five doesn't seem like far too few. Maybe the real silver lining in RJF's demise is that the team thinks Adams is almost ready.

And none of them can block there way out of a paper bag on run plays, and none of them are anything special at pass blocking either. Heaven help us if Rodgers wasn't so damn good at avoiding the pass rush. Hundley, who is more mobile than a lot of QBs, couldn't even keep from getting sacked way too many times. Plus they are all big fat nothings on kick offs, kick returns, and covering and receiving punts.

Rodgers was at least partially at fault on many of his sacks against Sea. He rediscovered the quick hitting plays in the second half, which will be the key against Atl.

Continues to be the only weakness in his game...you would take with a former WR at RB he would look for the check down more often.

I wouldn't put it that way, since by all accounts Gunter was a good guy who made the absolute most of his abilities.

I would say that I'm glad that the Packers have 6 better/faster players than the guy who lined up against J. Jones in the NFCC game.

Gunter never figured out how to use his size to his advantage. Al Harris wasn't fast, but he knew how to disrupt the timing of pass patterns in the first 5 yards. I never thought Gunter did.

Young Al ran a 4.45, Gunter 4.65. Older, slower Harris was also a master of the hold on every play strategy until they give up and stop calling it (similar to Seattle's CB's these days).

Hi Pete, What's going on with all of the running backs on the 53 man roster? Doesn't seem like the #3 and #4 guys are playing any kind of significant role on special teams and have yet to take a snap from scrimmage. Why not, instead, elevate a player or two from the practice squad who can fortify other positions that are "thin" because of injuries?
by AZ Andy 1:05 PM

We're only two games into a 16-game season. Running backs get hurt, those other guys will get their chances, and then some. They have to have seven inactives on game day anyway, so elevating guys if they're not then on the game day 46 doesn't do anything. They're going to need all the backs, you can almost guarantee it. It's a long, long season.

For me, the most disturbing thing about the Atlanta game was the (lack of) defense. I figured the offense would sputter, being without their top two tackles and with the usual early-season feeling-out that always seems to happen in Green Bay, but I had hopes the defense would be a stouter unit, particularly the corners. But that game looked just like the last two against Atlanta. The usual mush soup of loose coverage, lack of pass rush, and general bewilderment.

I had hopes that the Packers would stay healthy this year. Those too were dashed last week. Broken coverage schemes, strained hamstrings, broken hands: nothing new under the sun!
