Gord Downie, Tragically Hip frontman, dies of cancer aged 53

Lead singer of Canadian rock group and the country’s ‘unofficial poet laureate’ has died following battle with brain cancer

Gord Downie, frontman of Canadian rock band the Tragically Hip, has died after a battle with brain cancer.

A message on Twitter attributed to the Downie family announced that the musician had “passed away with his beloved children and family close by”. The statement went on to say that “Gord knew this day was coming – his response was to spend this precious time as he always had – making music, making memories and expressing deep gratitude to his family and friends for a life well lived”. Downie revealed that he had been diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in May 2016.

In my lifetime of loving music and that in all gendres, I've never seen a better 'Front Man' for any Great ROCK Band. Gord Downie was indeed Special and certainly loved and fully and completely appreciated in Canada.

Canada went into grief yesterday with the announcement of his expected death to this life. Up here we love 'The Hip'. We love Gord Downie.

Our Prime Minister was in tears when he spoke of this los to Canada in a Special Press Conference yesterday. I cannot even imagine the horrific pain we'll feel when that other Gordon passes away. I mean Canadian Icon Gordon Lightfoot. There was recently yet another tribute to his great works just recently and Gordon somehow keeps on.

My goodness but Gord Downie and The Tragically Hip Band Members could write the best ROCK Songs...." Three Pistols" is the second single by The Tragically Hip from the band's second studio album, Road Apples (1991). The song reached #1 on the RPM CANCON (Canadian Content) chart.

The title of the song refers to 'the city of Trois-Pistoles, Quebec', and the song is about the Canadian artist ''Tom Thomson' a Member of ' The Group Of Seven ', Famous Canadian Artists.

Note: Trois-Pistoles is a city in the Bas-Saint-Laurent region of Quebec, Canada. The town is located on the south shore of the Saint Lawrence River.

ANALYSIS Gord Downie's muse: 4 topics that influenced his songs

Tragically Hip frontman wrote extensively about environment, Indigenous issues

By John Mazerolle, CBC News Posted: Oct 19, 2017 9:52 AM ET Last Updated: Oct 19, 2017 12:49 PM ET

" ...It's all there in the lyrics.

In interviews, Gord Downie was sometimes halting and introspective, always trying to find the right words. He could be maddeningly vague when asked directly about his artistic intent, but listeners could find most of what they needed to know in the album sleeves of the Tragically Hip's 13 full albums and Downie's four side projects.

Downie, who died Tuesday at age 53, was seemingly incapable of writing a cliché. His lyrics avoided pop-rock boilerplate and had themes and motifs, not to mention heart and insight. ..."

Gord Downie's take on ' the prospect of death ', is captured in the band's 2002 song ' A Beautiful Thing '. A phone call surprises the narrator in the dead of night:

"You'd better be dying" — and you were

So we talked about things and where they went

Big remarkable events

And how each day's a new day

And they get spent

How you'd continue, artfully, like the breeze

Trying to do one true beautiful thing "

A poem written by me about someone that is 'everything far removed' from what Gord Downie was and will remain in accordance with all he left behind for the appreciative to appreciate.

A poem defining the small man of utter disgrace as he moves his useless flesh in every direction far removed from anything even closely resembling decency.

The Dummy Failure.

He can't get out, stuck in this cycle

Over and over, again and again

Making the same mistakes

Too selfish - stupid to realize

It's his bad and ugly choices

His patheticness and cries of pain.

The observer exclaims: Well done, 'You':

Your consistently successful

Ruining .....Everything

I come from downtown
Born ready for you

Armed with will and determination
And grace, too

The secret rules of engagement
Are hard to endorse
When the appearance of conflict
Meets the appearance of force

A Hip Fans Comment and this song:

" This song and it's message reminds me of why I became a criminal defence lawyer. It's a dirty job and, despite popular views, not one that pays well. The most delicate of our democratic values is the presumption of innocence and it must be vigorously defended no matter how serious or heinous the crime or how deplorable the individual."

" We told him with the bestowing of his name, in our custom, our tradition, it helps you in this world, but it also helps you in the next world, because your relatives, that is how they'll call you, to come and help and assist you on your journey." - Perry Bellegarde
