Don't mind Alexander, but didn't like how the trades worked out. If you go by the theory that a pick in the following year is equivalent to one round later, that's going to be roughly equivalent to a late 2nd for a top half of the third and a 5th. Just that is a pretty even trade, and we also dropped four spots in the first round. It could work out, but it will likely take a Drew Brees injury to do so, and he's been ultra durable.

Yes I had him NOT going to Round 2.

I see no reason to go by this theory. The pick is based on where NO finishes. Hope they have a bad year now. It was somewhat interesting how they reached up for Davenport though.

It's impossible right now to tell how the draft with the Saints plays out. Until we know how the Saints record ends up being, we don't know. If they have big injuries and it's a top-15 pick, then Gute is a genius.

Exactly. If the Saints aren't in the Divisional Playoffs again next year, the pick will be lower and of greater value.

If they pick 20, playoff round one loss, the trade is dead even.

But it doesn't help now unless you deal it now.

So its value while it remains a future asset is discounted to the present. Very illiquid.

Can be very valuable, but it has some limitations.

The calculation is if you can still get the guy you want and the extra pick, you're golden. That pick next year is worth LESS this year, but you already got it in your pocket AND got the guy you were targeting (most probably - Mayock had the Pack taking him at #14). It's a government bond with an high but inexact final amount that matures next year. Could be worth a lot.

Deputy Nutz
04-26-2018, 09:44 PM
The issue isn't whether they got value with the trade, its whether they lost value on who was available at 14 and what they ended up getting at 18.
Derwin James was available, also Edmunds. If those players reach their potential and become All Pros the Packers missed a big opportunity.

I like Alexander as he was the 2nd best cover corner in this draft. In fact he might be a better football player than Ward. I think it was better than moving up to get Ward, so the Packers have that going, which is nice.

Pete Dougherty @PeteDougherty
Packers trade with Saints officially announced, for No. 14 this year they get No. 27, No. 147 (fifth-rounder) and first-rounder next year.

Pete Dougherty @PeteDougherty
Packers receive picks 18 & 248 (R7) from Seattle for No. 27, 76 (R3) and 186 (R6).

Anything can happen. Streak like the Packers always picking in high 20s don't happen often. Even Pittsburgh gets weird in even seasons.

No one would be surprised if NO defense took a step back or the running game got slowed down a little this year.

Wide receiver

1. DJ Moore, Maryland

2. Calvin Ridley, Alabama ... He wasn't happy or maybe he was just relieved to get off the Board finally in Round 1 hahaha.. I think he'll be happy in Atlanta learning from two awesome WR"s including the BEST IMO, Julio Jones.

3. Courtland Sutton, SMU

4. Christian Kirk, Texas A&M
T-5. James Washington, Oklahoma State
T-5. Anthony Miller, Memphis

Rise: Moore (2), Sutton (4), Washington (NR)
Fall: Ridley (1), Kirk (3), Sutton (3), DJ Chark, LSU (T-5)

In that dipsy doodle of moves from NO. 14 to NO. 27 and back to NO. 18:

The Packers got a solid CB and covered a certain need. They did nothing really for Aaron Rodgers or add protection for him as I hoped they might.

The Packers also gave up their Third Rd. Pick at NO.76 and their Top 5th Rd. Pick at NO.186.

So they left two players on the Board that we liked as you named above or TREMAINE EDMUNDS, VIRGINIA TECH, ILB who went at NO. 16 to the Bills and DERWIN JAMES, FLORIDA ST.Safety who went next at NO. 17 to the LA Chargers.

Next Season for all intents and purposes the Saints will make the playoffs.

So that NO Saints First next Season is in all likelihood a No. 20 to 32 Overall Pick.

Player Bio Jaire Alexander - CB - Louisvile

" While Alexander was just a three-star prospect coming out of North Carolina, and ranked only in the top 70 cornerbacks in the country, Louisville saw a future starter in his speed, ball skills, and physical play on the outside. He proved them correct in 2016, intercepting five passes and breaking up nine others in 13 starts to garner second-team All-ACC honors. Alexander played in 12 games, with one start on defense (19 tackles, one interception) in his true freshman season.

He's also made a name for himself as a punt returner in his first two seasons (29 returns for 223 yards in 2015, 19 returns for 195 yards in 2016), including a 69-yard return for a touchdown against ACC rival Florida State in 2016.

Alexander missed about half of the 2017 season with leg and hand injuries, but managed to start six of seven games played on the year (19 tackles, one interception, four pass breakups) and was named honorable mention All-ACC."

Are you serious?

I also was thinking that we should draft him but I believe he landed in the perfect spot.

I had him (before the Draft) going at 15 and to the Arizona Cardinals. NO 16 was Originally in this Draft - Baltimore and if the Arizona Cardinals passed the Ravens would grab him. So the Ravens and their fans have to be ecstatic with the selection of Lamar Jackson late in Rd. 1.

That was Philly's Pick or NO. 32 and somehow NE got it and Baltimore traded back into Rd. 1 and NE to Pick Lamar Jackson.

So, the Packers got this?

for
2018 #14, 2018 3rd, 2018 6th

I had the wrong intel. Basically, to drop four spots they got a 2nd (trade chart equivalent), 5th, and 7th for a 3rd and 6th. I actually like that a lot, and they may have still got the player they wanted at #14. They have enough ammo to easily get back into the 3rd round.

I don't know how you can judge the Saints trade when you don't know what that 1st round pick will be. Could be anywhere from 1 to 32. I agree they probably got the guy they wanted. At worst, the trades probably turned out okay. If the Saints have a bad year, it could turn out really well.

For once, the Vikings did not draft the guy I did not want them to get in the first round. I was not a big fan of Hughes. I had a mid 2nd round grade on him. I'm sure Zimmer can scout CBs better than me, but I was worried they'd get OG Will Hernandez.

I went on an NFL forum and about 3/4 of the fans picked the Saints as the biggest loser in round 1, so there's that.

I thought we gave up more and got less. Seeing the actual picks changes my opinion. So far, I'm encouraged by Gutey. Not afraid to hit FA early. Not afraid to make tough decisions on aging vets (although I would rather he resigned Jordy for half his salary). Not afraid to move up or down in the draft. Ended the silly requirement that a corner that is under 5'10 1/2" can't be drafted. I'm not saying you should have a roster full of 5'9" CBs, but there have been a lot of CBs shorter than 5'10 1/2" who have made the Pro Bowl and can play in any scheme. Any hard requirement that would eliminate that likes of Darrell Green and more recently the likes of Chris Harris is silly.

Hopefully pbmax isn't lying face-down, dead on his keyboard.

I nearly was, but out of frustration, at finding a decent scouting writeup. Lotta sites are very skimpy if you aren't paying for the service.

I hope Joemailman or Rastak can bail me out of that today.

It's Baker!

Surprising. If they like Baker, whatever, that's fine. Separate argument. I think they were the one team uniquely positioned to draft Barkley #1 and then take your chances that Mayfield is there at #4, which he probably would have been. The Giants may have then taken Darnold. If the Browns were entertaining the thought of doing this, they must have been concerned about the Jets at #3 possibly taking Mayfield. Otherwise, why not draft Barkley 1 and Mayfield 4. OK, I understand they got Ward at #4, but they could have addressed corner later, like the first pick of the 2nd round.

Seems the best rushers went right before our pick?

NO. 14. New Orleans Saints (via Green Bay): Marcus Davenport, DL, UTSA

NO. 16. Buffalo Bills (via Baltimore): Tremaine Edmunds, LB, Virginia Tech

NO. 17. Los Angeles Chargers: Derwin James, S, Florida State

NO.19.[/B] Dallas Cowboys: Leighton Vander Esch, LB, Boise State

NO.22. Tennessee Titans (from Buff Via KC and Bal): Rashaan Evans, LB, Alabama

NO. 28. Pittsburgh Steelers: Terrell Edmunds, S, Virginia Tech

NO.32. Baltimore Ravens (via Philadelphia) ** Lamar Jackson, QB, Louisville and this Pick was Graded as an A +and the Highest Graded Pick in Round 1

** As this week progressed I wondered if he wasn't the Man the Packer should target. Lamar Jackson is seriously athletic and the most exciting and explosive Prospect in this Draft Class. He was there at Pick NO. 14 and Picks NO. 18 and 27. He is head and shoulders better that what we currently imagine as a competent Backup QB.

On the flip side. I feel Lamar Jackson landed with the Team of best fit and with after (a maybe and Arizona at Their original NO. 15 and the Baltimore Ravens Original NO. 16 Picks.

DRAFTED BY CLEVELAND BROWNS

Round 2 ‧ Pick 1 (33)

AUSTIN CORBETT - NEVADA - G

Prospect Info

6' 4" - 306 lbs - 33 1/8” -HANDS 10 1/2”

GRADE = 5.79

You want to talk about a fast riser. He's one of the cleanest players in this draft, plays with a nasty edge. The Browns are pretty good inside, so it will be interesting to see where they line him up. He was a former walk-on that went to a three-time captain. That's a John Dorsey pick right there. --Mike Mayock

Pick Analysis ... Round 2 • Pick 2 (34)

Guard - Will Hernandez - UTEP

" Run game mauler. I love the high-school wrestler background because it typically means you have great balance and leverage. He just doesn't like people. A little better than you think in pass protection. When he locks on with heavy hands, it's over. " --Mike Mayock

GRADE = 6.12

Round 2 Pick NO. 3 (35)

NICK CHUBB - GEORGIA -RB

GRADE = 5.79

They saw a running back they wanted. They pounced on him. Since he hurt that knee in '15, he got better in '16 but we saw the old Nick Chubb this year. --Mike Mayock

ROUND 2 - Pick NO. 4 (36)

DARIUS LEONARD - SOUTH CAROLINA ST. - OLB

Prospect Grade = 5.81

An off-the-ball linebacker. We know what this guy is. He's a dynamic, off the ball run and chase linebacker. He can play third down in your sub package, he can cover tight ends, you can drop him to a running back. --Mike Mayock

Round 2 - Pick NO. 6 - (38)

RONALD JONES - USC - RB (Junior)

This is an explosive player, he's electric outside and the one thing I loved about Ronald Jones is this is a guy behind somewhat of a patchwork line who still ran for 1,500 yards and 19 touchdowns. --Joel Klatt

There were some concerns about his knees but he's an outstanding run game guy. He can bend and anchor and on this Chicago Bears front, he's gonna be special. --Mike Mayock

COURTLAND SUTTON - SMU - WR

Pick Analysis

" Big bodied, outside-the-number wide receiver. Very smooth athlete. He's just got to finish consistently on inside traffic throws. He's got tremendous body movement. When you talk about signature, one-handed catches, nobody's got more than Courtland Sutton " --Mike Mayock

Pick Analysis

" An undersized edge rusher who looks like Yannick Ngakoue. He's got get-off, bend and dip. When I say he's got dip, you dip, I dip, we dip. That is Harold Landry, and that's Freak Nasty, baby. " -- Mike Mayock

ROUND 2 PICK NO. 10 (42)

MIKE GESICKI - PENN ST. - TE

He scored 1,800 points in high school basketball. Matchup nightmare in space. He is not a point of attack tight end in the run game. If you're a safety or a linebacker in space with him, that's tough duty. --Mike Mayock

DANTE PETTIS - WASHINGTON - WR

An outstanding punt returner. Very slight. I think he's a natural slot. What's interesting is Trent Taylor had a nice year for them in the slot last year. Can he make people miss? Yes he can but he's not real strong. --Mike Mayock
