Pete Dougherty @PeteDougherty
At No. 175 Packers draft WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling of South Florida, 6-4, 206, 4.37-second 40, 30 1/2 vertical. ... Tall, fast receiver, unusually big gap in performance in 40 time (great) and vertical (poor).

Meet the black Jeff Janis, kid is raw as shit. He’s not the ST player Janis is but will provide better pass catching.

GBPG:

LOWDOWN: Has good size and speed for a receiver and the ability to stretch the field. A big-play wideout, with 26.4 percent of his catches going for 25 or more yards. Likely needs to work on his route running. Played two seasons at North Carolina State before transferring, catching 44 passes for 538 yards. Started all 13 games his first season at South Florida in 2016, when he ranked fifth on the team with 22 catches for 415 yards and tied for a team-high five touchdowns. Set USF single-season receiving records as a senior last year with 53 receptions for 879 yards and six scores. He had three 100-yard games in his final five contests, including 133 yards and a TD against Texas Tech in the Birmingham Bowl. His biggest game came against UConn in November, when he caught six passes for 152 yards, including a school-record 95-yard TD. “He’s smooth, he’s got elite speed,” Packers college scout Matt Malaspina said. “A fine athlete. A good kid. … A very loose, athletic, long guy with speed.” - Scott Venci

QUICK TAKE (Tom Silverstein): This kid can fly, but he might be a Michael Clark type. Caught a lot of deep balls, but he'll have to do more than run straight down the field in the NFL.

Who is the Packer's Florida scout? Has it been the same guy for years, going back to Shields? Well, the answer is no. In fact, the Packer scouting department is extremely young. Lot of new guys, including Santana Dotson's nephew and Charlie Peprah. only West regional scout Sam Seale has been at it for more than 10 years (22 as an actual scout).

This guy seems to have the most connections with Florida....

Matt Malaspina (new guy)

Matt Malaspina (mal-eh-SPEEN-ah) enters his 20th NFL season and his first with the Packers in 2017. He joined the Packers as a college scout on Feb. 8, 2017, after spending 12 seasons (2005-16) with the San Francisco 49ers.

Malaspina finished his tenure with San Francisco as the team’s director of college scouting for four seasons (2013-16). He oversaw the daily operations of the college scouting department and the staff. For the three years (2010-12) prior, Malaspina was a national scout, primarily serving in the Southeast region. He also assisted the department by cross-checking the top prospects in college football.

For five seasons (2000-04), Malaspina worked under Ted Thompson in Seattle, serving as an area scout for the Seahawks. While in Seattle, he covered the Northeast and Southeast regions. Malaspina spent the 1999 season evaluating college prospects from the Southeast region for the Carolina Panthers. He also spent 1998 with National Football Scouting.

Malaspina was a coach as well, serving as an offensive assistant at Jacksonville University from 1997-98. His first college coaching position was with Central Florida, his alma mater, in 1997. Malaspina graduated from Central Florida in 1993, playing center for the Knights. Before returning to coach for the Knights, Malaspina played center in the Canadian Football League for the Shreveport Pirates in 1994 and participated in training camp in 1995.

Jon-Eric Sullivan

Jon-Eric Sullivan begins his 14th season with the Packers and second as the director of college scouting after being promoted on June 16, 2016. Sullivan previously served as a college scout covering the Central Plains region (2008-11) and the Southeast region (2012-15) after working as the team’s National Football Scouting representative to the annual NFL Scouting Combine and authoring evaluations of all prospective seniors in the Southwest region.
