Just lovely. Can't even play a softball game without sustaining a serious injury. And we wonder why the injury list is always so long.

GRAND CHUTE - Linebacker Clay Matthews was hit in the face with a line drive and left the field Saturday during a Green Bay Packers charity softball game.

Matthews was pitching in the third inning at Fox Cities Stadium when offensive lineman Lucas Patrick smacked the ball directly back into the Pro Bowl outside linebacker’s face. The force of contact knocked Matthews to the ground, and the ball ricocheted toward the foul line between third base and home plate. Matthews quickly stood up and, glove over his face, immediately walked toward the dugout while Patrick checked on him midway.

Matthews was taken to the hospital, according to NFL Network. The belief, according to the report, was that Matthews sustained a broken nose, but the Packers presumably requested a full checkup.

Matthews was one of two captains for the game, joining receiver Davante Adams. The game resumed about 30 minutes after Matthews departed, but Adams pitched behind a batting practice screen.

Without their captain, Team Clay rallied to win 10-9.

After the game, Adams spoke about the moment Matthews got hit.

“It was scary," Adams said. "I could hear a little crack. I didn’t know if it was glasses or what it was. You never want to watch something like that unfold. He didn’t seem like he was doing too bad, but I know it didn’t feel good.”

Adams didn’t know much more other than that Matthews had been hit in the nose and was in pain. Adams gave Matthews credit for getting to his feet so quickly and walking off the field.

“Tough guy, because I would've still been on the ground right now,” he said. “We're just going to pray for him and hope that he feels better soon.”

The Packers are in the midst of their organized team activity period. Matthews has not participated in OTAs because of a knee injury. After the Packers went almost the entire draft without selecting an edge rusher, Matthews’ health is critical to the Packers' success this season.

“You look at the depth at the outside linebacker position,” Matthews said earlier this month, “and it’s not that great.”

I suppose it could have been worse. Patrick's line drive could have hit him in his injured knee instead of his block head.

It'l just give him some of that old school football player look. Unless he sneezes it off during a game, it won't affect anything except his endorsement contracts.

Pitcher is a dangerous spot on the field. Not surprised it happened. I was lucky enough to have some college buds pick me to pitch to some real hitters once....fuckers tried to kill me about half the time. It was either a home run or a line drive right back at me. lol

That almost happened to me once, but I just barely managed to get my glove up in front of my face in time. Caught it too! Teammate said he heard 2 almost simultaneous cracks. The bat hitting the ball, and the ball hitting my glove.

Evidently someone forgot to tell CMIII that the pitcher, once he lets the ball go, becomes a fielder. The guy was just standing there, hands down by his side, waiting for something to happen. Well, it happened. Next time get those hands up and do something with them.

LB Clay Matthews provides update on his condition

Wes Hodkiewicz - PACKERS.COM STAFF WRITER

It was 'a broken nose' injury. Surgery to come after the swelling subsides.

That will open up a whole new genre of Commercials.

I can't hardly wait to see what he does.
