I'm glad this deal is done. Brings a good vibe to the beginning of the season. I'd love to see Reid here, but the NFL seems to be blackballing him. What a shame.

That 33.5 is per year. Ryan's contract averages something like 30, right?

It does not say 33.5 per year

"Jones says the contract includes $33.5 million in new money, incentives each year and more than $100 million in guaranteed money."

From APC:

The negotiation over Aaron Rodgers’ next contract has finally reached its conclusion. According to NFL Network’s James Jones, the Green Bay Packers and Rodgers have agreed to a four-year extension worth $134 million in new money. As part of the deal, Rodgers will receive $80 million between signing and March 2019, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

The deal, which reportedly includes over $100 million in guarantees, shatters the previous record for highest average annual value ($30 million per year, held by the Atlanta Falcons’ Matt Ryan). It remains unclear whether Rodgers’ new contract replaces his old one or simply attaches additional years and money to the existing agreement. In the latter scenario, the Packers would have their franchise signal-caller on the books through the 2023 season at a total cost of nearly $175.7 million. Such a contract would keep Rodgers in Green Bay through his 40th birthday.
https://www.acmepackingcompany.com/2018/8/29/17796804/aaron-rodgers-packers-agree-to-4-year-134-million-extension-nfl-2018

So the extension is $33+M/year, but the actual average including the current two is $29.3M which is a bit more manageable.

WTMJ is reporting that with all incentives, bonuses, etc. the new contract has a maximum potential value of $180 million. I wonder if some of the potential "extra" is for escalators that kick in if another player signs a bigger contract.

Pugger's ESPN link has the smallest details I have seen, it'll probably be a while before the full details are leaked:

The extension includes nearly $103 million total in guarantees, another record amount, and has an annual average value of $33.5 million, according to Schefter.

The total maximum value of the deal is between $176 million and $180 million, based on $4 million in incentives tied to helping the Packers make the playoffs and finishing top three in quarterback rating, the source told Schefter.

An important feature of the deal for Rodgers was the cash flow in the first year, according to Schefter. Rodgers will receive $67 million by the end of the 2018 calendar year and an additional $13 million before March 17, 2019, according to Schefter.

Writing Rodgers for VIP. Of note ... in 2014, when his previous extension really kicked in, he consumed 13.20 percent of the cap. In 2019, based on @Jason_OTC's projections, Rodgers could command 13.16 percent of the cap.

End of season '18: $66.9
By March 2019: $80.8 earned

$103 through 3 years
$176 through 6 with $4 mil bonus for team goals

Deal runs through 2023.

If my information is correct, Aaron Rodgers’ extension should free up over $15.4M in cap space for the #Packers (https://twitter.com/hashtag/Packers?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw).
— Zachary Jacobson (@ZachAJacobson) August 29, 2018 (https://twitter.com/ZachAJacobson/status/1034853989802684417?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw)
It is significant that the Packers were able to free up salary since it might signify that the team is looking to make some moves in the near future. Recently, GM Brian Gutekunst said that he was willing to spend money to acquire quality talent (https://www.12up.com/posts/6156871-packers-gm-brian-gutekunst-s-latest-comments-hint-packers-might-try-and-land-khalil-mack?view_source=teams_page&view_medium=[packers]) to help bolster Green Bay's roster.

With some holes in their defense, maybe the Packers will make a legitimate attempt to acquire Khalil Mack?

So... what % is paid to the QB and Offense vs Defense (ignore ST) by year? Will we be competitive on D - enough to outlast a bad playoff game, weather or injuries? Will nfl expand the pool, grow past 53 or allow luxury tax?

I think it’s a fair deal. he deserves it and is one of best ever. But at what cost? Is this his last contract? Does he end up a Viking at 41?

He basically IS the team, and he's getting paid accordingly. With a bonus that large, the cap shouldn't be stretched too much in the early years, and assuming he's still fairly near the top of his game by '22, another deal should smooth out the cap hit then.

OTC or Spotrac will give you offense versus defense, but OTC and Bill Huber projected Favre's money next year will be 13.16% of the cap, if it goes up as projected (by about $10 mil per team).

He was already predicting dissatisfaction in Year 4 on his podcast today because Rodgers gets close to 60% of contract value in first 3 years. Used Julio Jones as an example. However, Rodgers has never agitated like Jones has about being passed up. There may be other differences but I have not been paying attention to Jones specific complaints.

I suspect it will be enough to be the bonus, new money and cap champion twice in his career. Contract renegotiation at 38 likely will not be the same as this one.

If Spotrac is right, Packers could conceivably refuse to pay his 4.8 million roster bonus in 2020 (probably just after new league year starts in March) and have a cap hit that doesn't swamp the cap savings over the next two years. Could be a 2 year deal if he gets hurt. That is why its a nearly $60 million signing bonus.

Cause if OTC (based on Florio's report) is right, the hit this year is about the same.

Here is the ridiculous breakdown of the $4 million in incentives in the deal. Odd that the incentives fail to make this deal a 6 year, $180 million deal. I wonder how long they argued about that last $500,000.

2020 base-salary escalators ($1 million maximum)

A. $100,000 with at least 72.5 percent offensive playtime during the 2019 regular season, and the Packers must make the playoffs. An additional $120,000 with the same regular-season playtime qualifier and 72.5 percent or more playtime in the divisional playoffs. Another $130,000 at those playtime thresholds for the NFC Championship Game. An extra $150,000 for making the Super Bowl with the same playtime standards as before.

B. $100,000 each for finishing top three in the NFL in (1) passer rating, (2) completion percentage, (3) interception percentage, (4) yards per pass and (5) touchdown passes in 2019 with a minimum of 224 pass attempts and 72.5 percent of more Green Bay's offensive snaps that season.

2021-2023 incentives ($1 million per year; $3 million total)

These incentives have the exact same thresholds and dollar amounts as the 2020 base-salary escalators.

So now this thread is degenerating to Hundley-hate too hahahaha? Kizer will never be a decent QB because he lacks the discipline to avoid throwing interceptions. Rodgers has that discipline (and accuracy) better than anybody else in history. Hundley was MUCH better than Kizer will ever be in that way. I had hopes for Boyle - with Rodgers as his example, but it seems like he puts it up for grabs a lot too.

i like how people are bitching because the best player in the nfl has now become the highest paid player in the nfl

and the team can always improve the team by releasing some of the dead weight thats sitting on huge contracts, or using all of their cap money for the first time in forever
