Defensive end Ezra Johnson eats a hot dog during a game.

Johnson ate a hot dog on the Lambeau Field sidelines during the 1980 exhibition finale against the Denver Broncos. The Packers were routed, 38-0, and finished 0-4-1 in the preseason, with some calling for Starr's resignation.

Starr fined Johnson $1,000 and made the defensive end apologize to the team. Defensive line coach Fred von Appen quit over the incident, which he thought warranted a suspension. The resulting week of turmoil right before the season opener did not bode well for a successful start.

"I was just hungry . . . that's the truth," Johnson, 54, said from his home in Jonesboro, Ga. "The reason it became so big was that von Appen chose to quit because Bart didn't suspended me. http://archive.jsonline.com/sports/packers/82693772.html

Bart Starr was a great, great quarterback, a mediocre coach, and a lousy talent evaluator.
