View Full Version : The return of "The Luxury Automobile" TE Lewis

The like two plays he made last year when I got to yell "Luxury Automobile" at my TV were fun. TE Marcedes Lewis signed again.

The move also reunites Lewis with offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, who was in Jacksonville with Lewis during the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Lewis had one of his best professional seasons in 2017, catching five touchdown passes and helping the Jaguars lead the NFL in rushing yards.

I imagine Hackett had a role in convincing Lewis to return to Green Bay after McCarthy used him so little last year.

Very likely. I realize folks view him as a "blocking" TE. But even at his age, I'd like to think that he can give us something similar to Bubba Franks type of passing production, particularly short routes and certainly in the red zone.

I read that his last year in Jax he was a pretty effective receiver off play action.

Because they threw to him so little last year, I recall one rare occasion on which Lewis blocked, then released over the middle, and Rodgers threw him the ball, with not a single defender within fifteen yards.

Hackett: "They threw you eight times last year? Hell, buddy, we'll double that if you sign up with us this year!"

So now I know the exact statistic on how many times I yelled "LUXURY AUTOMOBILE!!" at my TV screen last year.

It's the same number of licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Tootsie Pop.

He is a 3rd and 4 machine. Stop the run he will get you a 6 yard over the middle catch. Stop the pass he will road grade a 5 yard run. Of course MM never figured out how to use a multi threat TE.

I'm a little bit surprised and not really pleased that they decided to keep Lewis. He was a nothing as a receiver, and an extra O-Lineman could do the job better as a blocker from the TE position in short yardage situations.

He was nothing as a receiver because MM didn't target him as a receiver. He was pretty good for Jax in 2017, especially off play-action. We'll see more play-action from LaFleur than we did from MM.

The injury to Degaura made this possible. Sternberger looks like a waste of a pick. He's the Oren Burks of that draft.

I still have plenty of hope for Sternberger. Was Tonyan that much further along in year 2 than Sternberger is? Tonyan had 10 catches his second year and didn't come to the team as a good blocker. Sternberger has 12 catches in his second year. Plus, Sternberger was injured for most of his rookie year. I just think he's too athletic and too natural as a receiver and route runner to give up on this early.

I got it wrong about Lewis - saying we should not re-sign him. However, I was praising Tonyan when a lot of others were on the Sternberger bandwagon and praising the Deguara pick. I haven't given up on Sternberger yet, but I do think he has under-performed for where he was drafted and may never be any more than just a guy. Deguara they shouldn't even have been drafted. I suppose he still could amount to something, but I'm not expecting much, especially considering where he was drafted.

I wouldn't be surprised, though, if we keep all four next year.

Here is the problem with Sterberger..... he’s the worst pass blocker I’ve ever seen. Putrid, pathetic, looks uncoachable.

Lazard is faster, smoother, better hands, more explosive, better pass protection player and equal run blocker.

Why play a tight end if they can’t do tight end things. You’re better off with a WR if you’re trotting out a TE who can’t pass protect. Useless.

I agree with Harv. Lots of TE's come out of college as bad blockers. So far his career has paralleled Tonyan's first 2 years: Too much missed time with injuries to really evaluate. I think there's a likelihood he'll get it together and then we'll find out we've been mispronouncing his name.

He does well running and hitting a target or moving forward.... but when he has to setup for pass pro he just looks tentative and confused. If I try to bum rush past my six year old, he drops his weight, digs his heels in and try’s to stop me. Stergberger doesn’t even have the sense to dig in, drop his weight and push back. It’s fucking bizarre to watch. Maybe over thinking, but still weird. Gary did some weird stuff last year so maybe overthinking will go away for Stergberger too

Is this a thread about the performance of current or even future Packers Tight Ends? Hmm?
Is it?

NAY! It most certainly is not!

This is a thread to celebrate the return of Old Man, The Big Dog, a legendary career of a man respected throughout the league who is still performing effectively.

This is about THE LUXURY AUTOMOBILE™. An old school, battle scarred, OG mofo who's still got something left in the tank. A nearly mythological style of player whom we get the privilege of witnessing while he continues his quest for the championship ring.

Allow me to refresh your memories and counter-steer this thread back on it's intended, proper, and original course.

Mercedes is shockingly effective. His pass pro is so underrated. When teams load up, we can count on 89 to keep mack or Brandon Graham or whoever at bay so 12 can find his guy. And when they only rush 4, he catches the damn ball so you have to cover him. He's a great piece that opens up the playbook with his pass protection excellence. Obviously he adds to the run game too. He’d be an awful piece in an offense that doesn't have the speed that Adams, MVS, Lazard, Jones and Tonyan bring. But he's in this very explosive offense and is a perfect fit

Look no further than how Lewis was used in 2018 under McCarthy (18% snap percent on offense) to how he's used with LaFleur (45% and 36% in '19 and '20 respectively) to see how the coaching strategies are improved. Lewis is an excellent support player that can help the other 10 guys on the field do more. And he can do work in the red zone from time to time.

When Sternberger breaks out, y’all will need to bow down to the original member of his bandwagon.

Tight ends usually line up closer to the LOS because they can block or run routes from that spot. If there is a blitz called, a big part of the advantage of the tight end is he can pass protect much better than a WR. Stergberger is clumsy, unnatural and inept at pass protection. You might as well have a receiver if the TE can’t pass block.

Sternberger is a feisty run blocker and a smooth pass weapon for the position. He’s just missing the one part, but it’s a very important part.

I’ve seen OTs never figure it out and it’s their whole job to learn to pass protect. It’s a task some guys never figure out. I don’t think they want him on the field much of he’s gonna get 12 killed. It might be a fatal flaw

If the signing bonus is only $2.1m instead of $4m, then it’s not really $4m/year deal. More like a 1y/$2.1m deal, then cut or restructure next year. It was a way to give that $2.1m without having it all on this year’s cap.

I like that Rodgers occasionally targeted Lewis - other teams see him as merely a blocker, and he was oh-so-wide-open on those plays.

Agree with Bobble about MM. In 2018 he was targeted four times. In 2019 he was targeted 19 times.

Ah, that's it. Burks. Adams. Fackrell.

I like how Lewis is used in the passing game and the more I look at it the more important he is with bahk injured and Lindsey gone. Going to need all the help we can get on the line.

Lewis kinda reminds me of Kuhn. Kuhn could sort of run and it had to be defended and he could sort of roll out and catch the ball so that had to be defended too. But 12 knew he was protected and loved that. Mercedes is like that. You keep him in pass pro and you know he’s gonna hold up, almost like an OT. 12 can work magic if he has time. That’s Mercedes charm. He run blocks really well too.

So if Gutes trades out of the third round altogether - either moves up in the second and gives away the third for it, or trades back into the fourth - we should be happy.

The future does not belong to the timid. Time to exorcise those 3rd round demons.

Plus we had the pleasure of watching 2 seasons of Jimmy Graham trip over the chalk.

But now doing a great job with the Bears.

Uninspired or misplayed with the Pack?

Either way, our bad.

Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and over after failing time after time

Just trade our 3rd every years.

Nah, he still can't block. He is ok as a situational red zone target. Mostly he is simply used up.

Now that they have Daguerrotype coming back, along with The Luxury Automobile and Robert Tonyan, perhaps they can trade the Furburger for a seventh round pick and a can of coca cola.

I think that would be asking too much. I don't know that anyone would want to give up that can of Coke.

That's what I was thinking. Maybe an RC Cola, but not Coke.

A 2025 seventh round pick and a can of caffeine free diet Pepsi.

As you can see, I am NOT a fan of the Furburger. He's hurt all the damn time, and for all the shouting about his great "potential" when they drafted him, he's developing only into a regular on the injury report. I think the one stretch of five games in his first season where he was healthy, he got some compliments on . . . how hard he tried to block.

My #2 most enjoyed yelling at the screen player name is John Kuhn.

But for whatever reason I enjoy yelling "THE LUXURY AUTOMOBILE!!!" at the screen during the game more than any other player previously. I really like how, just about when even I've forgotten about THE LUXURY AUTOMOBILE™ he's given the opportunity to make and deliver a big play.
