With the early passing of Lombardi, I think Starr become a symbol Of the Lombardi era and all that it stood for. I was 9 years old when the Ice Bowl was played. My first hero.

No other athlete in any sport ever held the top place for respect/admiration that Bart Starr held for me. My heart will always count him as a role model and the best that ever wore a Packer jersey. As for me, he will never be forgotten. RIP.

Truly a legend in his time. The reason I always tried to wear # 15 in any sport I played. The 1st NFL championship game I saw was the '65 mud-fest vs Cleveland and I was hooked on Green Bay ever since. As a kid, I thought the Packers would win every year. A true gentleman, humble, and admired by many. A sad day in my life. RIP Bart.

Exactly. I don't post very often but for this thread I will just add he was the reason I became a Pack fan in western ND in the 60s. When the viqueens came into existence, I would not switch my team, unlike many out where I lived.

Yep, I had that book too.

I feel a bit sad that I really only got to experience Coach Starr. He always came across as a bit testy, but you knew it mattered to him, but he just wasn't great on that side of the clipboard. '82 was a fantastic year though. His best. But that doesn't matter - his greatest accomplishments were on the field. I agree with Shadow that he's the greatest Packer.

I agree with Shadow that he's the greatest Packer.

thats why i asked if he was mr packer in the first post

i never saw him play, but in my opinion he was the ultimate packer. i still think a-rod and favre were better QBs, by starr is the face of the franchise

and honestly, you couldn't ask for a better man to be the face of your franchise

I agree. My only complaint is that the rawhide boys ranch wouldn’t take my used car because “they had to be able to roll it onto the transport”

Brett Favre

@BrettFavre
Bart Starr was the most kind, thoughtful and classiest person you could ever know. I consider myself extremely lucky to have called him friend and to have been mentioned in the same breath. Deanna and I are praying for Cherry and the Starr family. #RIPBartStarr

Troy Aikman

@TroyAikman
Bart Starr was a true gentleman and one of the kindest people I knew. I had elbow surgery following our ‘95 Super Bowl in Birmingham and Bart made a visit to the hospital. To this day, not sure how he even knew I was there. #ripbart

Kurt Warner

@kurt13warner
Saddened to hear the news that one of my idols #BartStarr has passed away... one of those rare GREAT players that was a WAY better human being than fball player! He touched so many and will be deeply missed - the world needs more like him!

John Kuhn

@kuhnj30
I only got to meet you a few times but each time you reminded me of what an impact you can have by just being good person. One of the nicest people Ive been blessed to know and the epitome of what it means to be a professional athlete! RIP Bart Starr

Mason Crosby

@crosbykicks2
Bart Starr is a legend in so many ways! I am so sad to hear this news today. I remember first meeting him my rookie year at the Lombardi golf classic. He always had time for everyone and made everyone around him better. Praying for Cherry and their family on this sad day.

Calais Campbell

I’m saddened to learn of the passing of Bart Starr. His legacy has touched many people and I’m lucky to be one of those that was inspired by his spirit. Thank you for being the ultimate role model for professional athletes. Rest in Heaven

Man, this has been a tough day. Bart epitomized class in everything he did. He’s an absolute legend and should always be remembered for who he was, not for what he played. He was so much more than a football player. #RIP

Video from Thanksgiving Night when Favre had #4 retired and Bart Starr was brought out. Starr portion of video at about 7:00 mark. I'm still mad at the Packers for losing to the Bears that night.

Today is a sad day. Bart Starr was truly one of the greatest, both as a quarterback and as a man. He deserves so much of the credit for five @packers championships. Bart, you were a special player and man, and you will be greatly missed by all of us. @nfl @ProFootballHOF

My wife was a young teenager in the mid-sixties, and was attending a wedding with her family in Dallas.
The Packers were in town.
On her way back to her room from the pool, Bart held a door open for her.
So typical of a gentleman.

That stadium looks awfully small to be able to fit the 5 million people who all say they were at that game. :)

It jumps out that all the comments from the people who met him, say how good a man he was. He was the best of his era, a legend on the field, but an even better man. When we talk about "Packer People" he is what defined it.

That's how you stay warm at a game like that. Or some random drunken stranger could give your foot an invigorating rub, like what happened to my daughter at the Vikings playoff game.

I was 4 years old, sitting in the Charlotte, NC airport when my grandpa whispered to my grandma he thinks Bart Starr is sitting next to him. Before he said anything, this gentleman leans over and says, "I see you're wearing Green Bay Packer shirts. Are you from Wisconsin?"... my Grandpa says, "yes we are. has anyone ever told you that you look a lot like Bart Starr?" Bart replied, "Well, my wife thinks I'm pretty good looking, but I'm just an old aging former Packer quarterback now. But yes, I am Bart Starr." He sat and talked to us forever, and took me into those old photo booths and took 4 snap shots with me in the booth. He signed it, "To the Packers future 1st round draft pick. Bart Starr" It was very cool, and even though it is now 34 years later I still remember that day. Unfortunately, my parents realized after doing a house remodel, they've lost that picture he took with me. It sucks, but the memory is awesome.
