I’m counting the edge players in this.
Clark - Packer HOF talent.
Daniels - Packer HOF talent. At the tail end of his prime, but still young enough for a prime year at 30.
Zadarius - Plays the run and pass well
Preston - Same with a slight lean toward pass
Gary - is a wild card, but I like him to rotate in and blow guys over with his fresh legs and uncommon brute force
Fackrell - a nice situational piece. Has a nice first step and some bend. Is a matchup problem for OTs who struggle with speed.
Lowry - has been a solid player. His best 8 games were his last 8 games where he had three sacks, 4 deflected passes and a forced fumble. He says he’s in the best shape of his career and understands the defense now so he can turn it loose the way he did in the second half of last season
Lancaster - A Suprise showing late last year. His pro day numbers were slightly better than Clark’s combine numbers. Clark was 20 compared to Lancaster’s 23 at the time of their testing. One guy closer to his prime so obviously I’m not saying he’s as good of an athlete. But has a lot more upside than his undrafted status would suggest. He says he’s increased his explosion and foot/hand quickness while keeping his strength the same. Plus he knows the defense. I actually project him to be a starting caliber nose in 2019.
Mont Adams - DL coach said Adams has figured out how to be a pro. He showed up in shape, and with marked improvement over last year. I haven’t been a big Adams fan, but he did flash late last year and I think he made some big gains this offseason that will show up on the field.
Those are 9 guys that range from Packer HOF talent to low level starter. And I know low level starter doesn’t sound especially appealing, but when a guy like Adams, Fackrell, Gary, Lancaster or Lowry only have to play 20 snaps per game, they can unleash everything they have and play above that as part of a deep rotation. Also, only playing 20 snaps, they can be put in matchups and situations that highlight their talents while negating their weak spots. Lancaster can play short yardage and goalline. Fackrell can play more in games where the OT struggles with speed and more on passing downs to negate his size issues. And so on. And on top of those guys playing above their level, they also rest Clark, Daniels and Zadarius so our big horses can play even better than they already play.
We have star players. We have rotation players. We have pass specialists and run specialists and a couple all around studs. The depth and variety is going to be mix and match heaven for Pettine. Each game will look a little different based on matchups. Overall, I look for the Packers to be a deep, physical, punch you in the face defense that gets better as the game goes on. It’s gonna be a big year for defense! It’s kind of a special window because we get that last big year out of Daniels lined up with the primes of Clark and Zadarius and then crazy veteran depth mostly at the end of their rookie contracts so that’s why it’s so experienced and affordable.
