I’m counting the edge players in this.

Clark - Packer HOF talent.

Daniels - Packer HOF talent. At the tail end of his prime, but still young enough for a prime year at 30.

Zadarius - Plays the run and pass well

Preston - Same with a slight lean toward pass

Gary - is a wild card, but I like him to rotate in and blow guys over with his fresh legs and uncommon brute force

Fackrell - a nice situational piece. Has a nice first step and some bend. Is a matchup problem for OTs who struggle with speed.

Lowry - has been a solid player. His best 8 games were his last 8 games where he had three sacks, 4 deflected passes and a forced fumble. He says he’s in the best shape of his career and understands the defense now so he can turn it loose the way he did in the second half of last season

Lancaster - A Suprise showing late last year. His pro day numbers were slightly better than Clark’s combine numbers. Clark was 20 compared to Lancaster’s 23 at the time of their testing. One guy closer to his prime so obviously I’m not saying he’s as good of an athlete. But has a lot more upside than his undrafted status would suggest. He says he’s increased his explosion and foot/hand quickness while keeping his strength the same. Plus he knows the defense. I actually project him to be a starting caliber nose in 2019.

Mont Adams - DL coach said Adams has figured out how to be a pro. He showed up in shape, and with marked improvement over last year. I haven’t been a big Adams fan, but he did flash late last year and I think he made some big gains this offseason that will show up on the field.

Those are 9 guys that range from Packer HOF talent to low level starter. And I know low level starter doesn’t sound especially appealing, but when a guy like Adams, Fackrell, Gary, Lancaster or Lowry only have to play 20 snaps per game, they can unleash everything they have and play above that as part of a deep rotation. Also, only playing 20 snaps, they can be put in matchups and situations that highlight their talents while negating their weak spots. Lancaster can play short yardage and goalline. Fackrell can play more in games where the OT struggles with speed and more on passing downs to negate his size issues. And so on. And on top of those guys playing above their level, they also rest Clark, Daniels and Zadarius so our big horses can play even better than they already play.

We have star players. We have rotation players. We have pass specialists and run specialists and a couple all around studs. The depth and variety is going to be mix and match heaven for Pettine. Each game will look a little different based on matchups. Overall, I look for the Packers to be a deep, physical, punch you in the face defense that gets better as the game goes on. It’s gonna be a big year for defense! It’s kind of a special window because we get that last big year out of Daniels lined up with the primes of Clark and Zadarius and then crazy veteran depth mostly at the end of their rookie contracts so that’s why it’s so experienced and affordable.

All of that depth and mixed skill sets up front will trickle back too. Fresher stronger pass rushers mean we get pressure with 3 or 4 instead of having to rush 5 or 6. Obviously that helps the coverages. Being most of these guys are so experienced and reliable, that opens Martinez and Amos up to trust what’s in front of them and play with more speed, confidence, and ultimately, tenacity.

In so many ways that depth has a trickle down effect on the whole defense, and maybe the whole team if it helps our shot caller, Hollywood Rodgers, from abandoning the game plan and passing 75% of the time.

Oh yeah, and Clark is only 23 years old. He might have yet another level of dominance in him that we haven’t seen. He’s the exact same age this year as Lancaster was last year. He might end up being a HOF type talent. I can’t put a ceiling on him just yet.

Agree with best dl in a looong time, disagree with Daniels being packer hof, but that is nitpicking.

agree this is the best front we've had in a long long time. Devin Bush would have been a Pro Bowler very fast with his speed and playing behind this DL. He would've been a perfect fit :)

Did you mean deepest front 7?
You're listing Preston Smith and Fackrell, neither of whom will likely play on the DL. I expect Gary and Zadarius will see snaps there however.

I don't recall the DL back in 96...I'll have to ask Google. If you're just going by SB winning seasons, you could argue the 2010 defense was pretty darn good, even if the depth was impacted by injuries. Pickett-Raji-Green-Cullen Jenkins was a pretty good mix and did some real damage.

The '96 line was Reggie White, Gilbert Brown, Santana Dotson, and Sean Jones.

Can't beat that line.

I call the lineman and OLBs Dline. Front 7 would include ilbs. But with Gary and zadarius and Preston, calling them dL seems fine to me.

You're forgetting about Gabe Wilkins, the human vagina that took himself out of SB XXXII, rather than attempt to tackle Terrell Davis.

Was looking at FO just now and thought one comment was appropriate (wist please take a breath before reading, find your safe space).

At what point will we replace from 7 with front 6?

We’ve known for years that nickel is base. Wist’s bestest buddy, spraypainthair told me that himself in 2015.

Remember when a 2-4 could become a 3-3 just based on whether Perry actually put his hand on the ground? Good times.

2010 was a great line and was certainly better. Prime Raji was unblockable, Jenkins was a beast, and Spill-it Pickett was a stud too. Couldn't run on those thickie thickies.

I did not need to think about this today. Poor Darius Holland.
