View Full Version : Is David Bakhtiari more of the problem than we might think?

First we have this assertion from a guy that seems to reference Pack A Day podcast frequently in his Tweets, but provides no details on where he heard this:

I’ve heard the new Packers O-line coach, Adam Stenavich, doesn’t advocate James Campen’s “hug” technique. How do you think that will affect the line this year? — @CallMeMatub

Geoff Schwartz (former football player and brother of a KC lineman I think):

So the “hug” technique is something that’s been unique to the Packers and it drives “holding” social media wild. The Packers tackles, and especially standout left tackle David Bakhtiari, attempt to block their counterparts with their hands wider than usual, and it looks like a hug.

He is referring to Bach's hands on the outside of the shoulders technique that he and Bulaga and maybe one Guard use.

It’s NOT holding, since the Packers linemen still have their hands inside the framework of the defender and — a key point here — they keep their feet moving.

Lastly, remember the officials watch film, get reports, and speak to coaches. If it were holding, it would get called more often. So stop bitching about it.

Now back to the question. This shouldn’t affect the older players, like Bakhtiari, if Stenavich allows those players to continue to use the techniques that have worked for many years. It would be a poor coaching decision to attempt to change the successful techniques of linemen who’ve practiced these over and over.

I’ve been in that situation where an offensive line coach wanted to change my stance, change my punch and so forth, when I was already been established — and it didn’t go well. It strained our relationship as I rightfully pushed back.

Where Stenavich will make his mark is with the younger players who are willing to be molded and who want their coaches’ full input. Another way that Stenavich might change things is his terminology and his identification system. This happened in Dallas last season until a change was made at offensive line coach.

So as the average fan, you might not notice much.

But no one calls this "the hug technique" on the Packers. So then this happened:

@TJLang70
This is a crazy narrative. Played 8 seasons under Campen and don’t remember ever hearing once about a hug technique. Packers OL and OTs especially will continue to use the techniques that beat work for them.

Apparently, Bears and Vikings fans think this is cheating.

@geoffschwartz
Dude there’s like whole articles and long studies on this by Vikings and Bears fans. It’s wild. Haha. It’s just good blocking.

@TJLang70
Saw like a 30 min video on YouTube about it hahah. Crazy.

Asked about what coaches and player will do to adjust:

@TJLang70
Everyone uses their own technique on gameday. If a coach is preaching the “punch” technique and a player gets beat using it, who’s to blame? It’s always the player. End of the day a guy uses the technique that he is most comfortable with.

So Aaron Rodgers is out of control enthusiasts: are David Bakhtiari and TJ Lang ego driven monsters with no regard for the good of their team?

I can't find the 30 minute version Lang mentions, but I think this is the flavor:

Wasn't Bahktiari the best LT in the NFL last year statistically? How'd Rodgers do statistically?

Rodgers is changing plays at the line of scrimmage that affect pace and all 11 guys on the field. Winning an individual block is different.

At the end of the day though, not everyone is Tom Brady just like not everyone is Reggie White. Rodgers isn’t the best. If he can’t simplify and command to make everyone around him better I guess it’s no more a knock than it is that Kenny Clark can’t get 20 sacks in a season. He’s just not as good as the best.

Go to 2:45 and listen to Joe Thomas talk about hand placement. If Stenovich is trying to force Bakh out of his proper technique into a poor technique, I would say the coach is at fault on that one.

But when it comes to QB play and pace and tempo and keeping things simple for the offense, I tend to blame Rodgers for overcomplicating that.

That's just pure bullshit!

Go follow one of the 31 teams that does not have the GOAT QB.

Much film study and preparation goes into putting a game plan together. Blocking schemes/techniques are a part of each plan. Tendencies and the weak zones of opponents are identified and ways to take advantage are devised. If the LT needs to employ this or that blocking technique then they will use it as long as it is legal.

IMO, the experience of the veterans and the coaches will serve GB's Offensive Line and those players that make the O-line roster. Rookies will learn technique from both and all will learn/execute the new offensive system. I'm very positive about GB's 2019 O-line and those that will at some point be called upon to step up and play.

Is Brady the best?

Or is Belichick?

This was, of course, his coach's idea. I am sure you remember substituting tempo for personnel groups.

I've just received a signal from the stands that this argument is correct.

Is there any chance that that John 3:16 sign was inspired by a coach in the stands signaling wind speed and direction to his kicker?

This would only make sense if there were all sorts of different signs with different passages. Or maybe appropriate messages, like Jonah 1:4 for that game at Chicago in '93. Wait, is this the Christian Encourager website?

Every time that show went to the Schrute Farm was a huge win. The bed and breakfast episode was fantastic.
