Told it's likely a sixth-round pick heading back to GB for Trevor Davis. #Raiders WR group is banged up - WR/KR Dwayne Harris did not practice Wed with an ankle injury while J.J. Nelson (ankle) and Tyrell Williams (hip) were limited

Sacramento Bee guy.

I guess if they won’t give him snaps a sixth rounder is better than nothing for ol pencil legs. Watch the bomb threat get a lot of Al Davis specials in Oakland. Bombs Away!

Bummer; I had some hopes for Trevor Davis.

Seemed like the dude could get open and ran decent routes and was a ST threat.

They probably feel they have the same with Shepherd. And Tremon Smith did a good job returning kicks for the Chiefs last year.

I'm not that surprised. Davis was on the bubble for even making the roster at the start of training camp. He didn't show much on special teams and was buried on the WR depth chart.
They probably see more upside with the other WR's.
I would say a 6th rounder is a good move for us.

Interesting. Sounds like we picked up a dift KR too. Not sure we should get into the habit of trading folks to future opponents..

Do we start a Tremon smith thread?

Should be a higher 6th round pick too. Ammo.

Darius Shepherd can return punts. The new CB is a kick returner.

I never felt comfortable with Davis on returns. He has always looked uneasy while catching kicks/punts, and didn't always make good, quick fair catch decisions.

This was likely his last year in GB anyway. UFA next off season, and hadn't done enough for GB to make an effort to sign him. Likely nothing more than a minimum wage guy in the future, which would have netted no compensation to the Packers. This way, they get something.

He won't be missed. Didn't contribute anything they can't replace with guys on the rosters already.

He looked like he might have turned a corner this preseason, but other than that one catch against the Bears, he didn't do anything on offense. Add to that his punt returns that consist of fair catches even when the punt was returnable, and he was expendable.

Seems like a win for Gutecheck.

His decision making on punts was really shaky against Vikings. He got called for a penalty for blocking after signalling for a fair catch. I also remember one where he probably should have signalled for a fair catch but didn't and was hit hard almost immediately.

Shepherd looked so natural from day one. Not only did he catch every punt, but he aligned himself so he caught it while picking up speed going forward and made it look easy. The new CB is supposed to be a hell of a kick returner. Got a sixth round pick. Seems like a good move

Who?

Who can they replace him with?
Kickoffs - Smith, Sullivan (did in college) maybe Dexter Williams, MVS, etc.
Punt returns - Shepherd, Lazard or Sullivan (both did in college), Tramon Williams
Gunner - Smith, any of the others above
Wide receiver - anyone listed as a receiver on the roster.

A guy like Ka'dar Hollman is physical, fast and has good size. He would seem to be a good possible as a gunner

Those two bad decisions in a close game could have been significant, luckily they weren't. Might have caused the coaches to lose trust in him.

Oh no, I wasn’t questioning your post. I was making a joke that Trevor Davis has done so little in Green Bay that I didn’t know who he was.

100% agreement. Davis's production was less than impressive both as a KR specialist and as a WR during the tenure as a Packer.

If I correctly recall, other players tried out during preseason at the KR position. Is CB Darius Shepherd GB's next in line to return kicks?

Does that mean that an open slot currently exist on the Packers 53 mam roster?

My first reaction was negative, but I guess, considering the alternatives we have, it's a good trade. The bottom line, maybe, is that Davis has been injury prone. It's probably better than 50/50 he misses games with Oakland and would have with us.

Thomas Davis, who injured one of Ted’s first draft picks, Terrance Murphy, is still in the league.

Is CB Darius Shepherd GB's next in line to return kicks?

Perhaps. But I'm pretty sure Shepherd plays WR, not CB. I know this b/c I saw Shepherd catch a TD in the first preseason game. I was like, the lord is my Shepherd! HHCD, I am punnier than Rand.

To fill Davis' roster spot, they oughtta bring 'black' Jordy Nelson or Janis. Either one of them would be an upgrade over Allison.

I lol each time the Sloth runs that petty presnap lateral motion that epitomizes the Gruden-Shanahan WCO system. LaFluer is seriously gonna hand the rock off to a sloth?

he'd topped out, no upside left, and still buried on the depth chart.

I just hope this is not a case of unnecessary roster-tinkering for no clear reason. You know : "I should be GM of the year - see all the moves I made?"

I do have a reservation here. Davis was injured again in camp, so perhaps they don't trust him. Perhaps they don't like him as gunner but needed him do it because he was on the game day active list as the returner.

But he seemed to be fine in the offensive system. He good at sitting down in a zone. I am curious why he did not get more run in the offense.

Stocking up for a move into Round 5, or to draft a lot of kickers.

I'm never happy to see a player with speed get traded. I see he has amassed 1 net punt return yards. Randall Cobb has 4.

Definitely could go to mason Crosby’s replacement of for moving up in the 5th to nab him. Lots of Kicker starved teams right now. Someone’s gonna reach.

Both possibilities are real - good point.

As for Davis, I would have agreed with Patler's assessment prior to the start of this season. However, he appeared to me to be much more confident in his decision-making this season, and more comfortable making fair catches. I know he did not have many returns, but I think the Packers are struggling to block the other team's gunners, so there is little choice but to call for a fair catch. I also thought Davis appeared to be better at running routes and sitting down in zones; I was ready to call for him to be given a shot as the slot receiver.

But alas, he is gone. I wonder if Sheppard or the new kid, Smith, will get punt returns.

Sheppard was destined to be on the same field with Allison.

I think its the new guy, Tremon Smith for kickoffs at least.

This just convinces me that we need guys PLAYING in preseason. Practice is not a gauge or substitute. If it were we might actually have seen Davis or Vitale make a couple plays by now. I read the raving reviews of those 2 plus Gary and a few others. I have yet to see where that has mattered during games.

Davis made plenty of plays in the preseason. 'Ol tunnelvision wouldn't throw there unless it's desperation. And even then, it's not a good bet. Especially when you only get a couple snaps each game and commit penalties and stupid mistakes when you're in there.
