View Full Version : Christmas Gift Ideas !

Radagast

With Christmas drawing ever closer, some may be facing the challenge of what to give for Christmas. The ideas are simple for some, but for others we face more difficulty.

My Christmas list is both easy and hard. Take my sister-in law for example. She does not need any more clothes and a kitchen ware or house cleaning gift would not go over well. As a result I've alternated giving her a nice table candle or scented bath soaps.

While pajamas work for some, they don't work for others. There was a time when power tools worked for some, but no longer.

I've started this thread to be a help for members. Suggestions, help request, holiday ideas, etc. now have a thread. Hopefully someone will benefit from another members good holiday spirit.

Merry Christmas !

The only conclusion I can come to is that Packerrats is being used as a Dropbox for coded messages for a nefarious organization.

Unhappy people sometimes use a forum to vent their sad lives upon. The shame is that too many people build walls instead of bridges. No hidden coded messages here, just a hope that all have a happy holiday season.

Rad - You have to be reasonable. You make threads in RR that are cool and get people talking as you see in the BBQ one. But then you say global disses that are not cool. You cant expect posters to want to chat it up with you when you insult their intelligence and seriously call them idiots. It’s one thing to battle with someone because you don’t agree. It’s another to take your ball and go home then act surprised when they don’t want to play with you later.

Arguing or debating is part of the fun of posting IMO. Grouping the entire forum into the category of idiots is wrong. I could see if you said that to me or Red. But there are many informed posters who try having a little fun with you. Instead of rising to the occasion you shrink. Battle back if you choose but stop getting all butt hurt with everyone might help.

Believe as you please, but I'll not back down to a racist or be bullied by anyone. Debating should be a part of this forum, but personal attacks and low class behavior can't be overlooked when it's directed in my direction. More than one posters are on my ignore list, so I'm trying to avoid confrontations. Not all forum members are idiots, yet too many would fit in just fine with the 13/14 year old at a middle school.

I don't know your age, but I grew up with Bob Hope and Carol Burnett and many others that did not feel the need to use vulgarity or sex to get a laugh. You can call me what you will, but I've refused to lower my standards to accommodate anyone. It's always been easier to lower standards than to elevate them. In addition, I also salute those rare post/posters that do write impressive prose and present a valid argument.

I don't feel the need to wallow in the mud because others do it..

Yes not suppose to have multiple accounts. In today’s VPN world it isn’t hard to pretend you are in different place. Sort of a not worth the effort to prosecute victimless crimes thing. My main concern is personal info being revealed or someone doing malicious shit. That’s why we have a few admins who can zap the account and remove anything if needed. I If someone gets their jollies having multiple account I don’t worry because the forum tends to regulate itself.

This sums it up nicely. Consider the forum posters the bulldogs and Sylvester the morons who waste their time.

I would consider admins the old man or the dog catcher.

If I were not a poster in this forum, the "good ole boys" would find another to be sadistic with. Yes, my morals are strong and for that I stand proud. I'm not a morality marshal and I know that the behavior of others is not within my ability to correct. Being civil is within the authority of this forums managers, yet their standards are based according to their personal standards. Enough said.

Incorrect. You wag your finger in people's faces, shame them and moralize in a condescending fashion. This is an Internet forum whose primary function is discussion of a GAME. Which, I may remind you, is ENTERTAINMENT. Ergo, this is a forum about ENTERTAINMENT.

Moralizing detracts from ENTERTAINMENT and makes it UNFUN.

Therefore, you get dogpiled because that is more FUN then playing by your rigid, UNFUN rules, which, by the way, you have no authority to impose or enforce.

If you have me on 'ignore', you are what kids these days refer to as a PUSSY.

You make my point for me. Your very correct, I don't any authority to impose civility or enforce rules on personal attacks. If I ignored all the posters that offended me, I'd find very little to read. As for my own post, a little research would find that I've been more right than wrong about the Packers.

"Moralizing detracts from ENTERTAINMENT and makes it UNFUN." ? This sort of statement confirms my argument and only displays your true character.

Only thing is, the wagging seems to happen without any self awareness. Like a tail wagging a dog. I'm trying to figure out for myself if that should be an argument for a little sympathy or if it makes it even more irritating. I agree, though, it makes it more unfun AND more entertaining at same time

As long as you and pals prefer to be low class, vulgar, and (for some) racist, that's your business. I can't stop you.

I do however request that you and your buddies equally enforce the rule on PERSONAL ATTACKS. You may agree with those post, but as an administrator you do have a duty to enforce your own rules without cherry picking when you will or will not act with neutral fairness.

A nice sugar bowl and sugar spoon would better apply to those young folks setting up their first homes of their own. Canned fish is a nice idea, but a whole case is a bit overboard. A cookbook might go well with that Salmon though.

I’m thinking of not buying anything this year. What for. Too much stuff already and it will just get thrown in the closet and eventually thrown away or donated. I want a simpler life. I would like to give and receive the gift of love. I wish for time to slow down and to be able to enjoy moments that I can remember fondly instead of seeing the pictures on my phone. But none of that’s probably on sale on Black Friday. There are many things happening that have me thinking this way. Bad choices and even worse reactions.

Maybe I’m really hoping for peace on my little piece of Earth.

I understand your feelings on this. IMO, too many egos get bruised each year due to the size/price of their presents. For me it's not the amount or size or the expense that I value, but how well a gift is thought out. Anyone can give a can of shaving cream, but some thought must be applied to buy someone a dress shirt with the correct collar/arm length size. Lined house slippers for one who needs them. Even a supply of printer paper shows that you cared enough to fill a need.

I began this thread to give members a place to exchange gift ideas, perhaps it will help someone this Christmas.

Hear hear. Peace is what I got my dad this year. I don't mind giving gifts but I dread getting them. I'm a buy once cry once kind of guy so I need nothing. I have one pair of boots that are on their 5th sole. Plus I live in the city, I don't have McMansion levels of space to store shit that I have to keep around so as not to offend someone. You ever get art as a gift? There is no worst gift than art that someone else picked for you.

I had gifts under control for a while. Among my siblings we instituted secret Santa with a $50 price limit. With a low budget and only one gift to give the challenge becomes to make it as intimate and thoughtful as possible. On the other side my wife went to war and now gifts have been replaced with a family trip. That's probably too harsh tbh, for some people giving gifts is their love language.

But kids wrecked everything. Now my lines are broken and hordes of toys are closing in from both flanks.

All are free to celebrate/not celebrate holidays as they please. Like so many others, I too cringe at the ever increasing greed and unabashed advertising that increasingly attaches itself to every holiday now. Christmas has become the retailers yearly "BIG SALE EVENT". The shameless commercialism however can't erase my holiday traditions/spirit. Presents are a traditional custom, but some go overboard with it. For some it has even become an opportunity to show off their wealth with showy gifts like cars or pianos or expensive jewelry

For me, gifts say how we thought enough of another to present them with a gift that fills a need or fits their uniqueness. A simple dress shirt can have more personal value than a non-personal gift costing much more. A set of pot holders for the kitchen can have more real personal value than gift certificate.

It's my hope that this season some portion of holiday cheer/spirit will fill at least some small corner of those hearts that have been occupied by darkness and negativity.

+1. The Christmas schwag in the retail stores right after Halloween makes me puke in my mouth.

One of our best Christmas mornings: we loaded a bunch of gift bags and gave them to the homeless. Kids didn't open a gift until after lunch. Kids didn't bat an eye.

Boy, have you turned into a soft warm vagina.

Also, what the fuck is this fuck of a thread? Over ten years of this crazy forum and people are still blabbering on about their feelings and low blow personal attacks. These motherfuckers would have never lasted during the wild west days of this place. Remember when I used Partial's nipples as my avatar for like 3 months before he realized that picture was of his own nipples?

Yeah I have turned softer than a flour tortilla. Life will beat you into submission like that I guess.

But it is good you are back. Radagast (this thread starter) might be lookin for a mentor. Someone to teach him the ways of the forum world. He could be your new skinbasket.

I’m pretty sure everyone has selective amnesia when it comes to the battles of the old times here.

Radagast

Its evident that posting rules are selectively applied. I don't need a mentor to see that the majority of this forum's members are a few lessons light on basic civility training. Drug dealers, zombies, serial criminals, and vulgar comedians are their heros. Trashing things like Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc. is for them a perverse delight.

Yes, I now see that my words only serve to just stir up the garbage. Its true that I've tried to introduce clean and valad threads to this site, then the race begins to post the insults, vulgar comments, and gutter slang. I find it sad that their lives are so miserable and that such behavior eases their unhappy lives.

As for those that do post with civility and intelligence, I say thank you. Your post serve to brighten up the site and remind me that there are still a few good people around.

With Christmas 8 days off, most have their tree and holiday decorations in place. I'll be shopping at the grocery store for holiday treats as well as the basic weekley needs. I'm going to surprise our family Christmas gathering with a special appetiser, sausage balls. Simple to prepare and great holiday treats.

I have a tradition of including a sample bottle of liquor with each gift. Each selected to fit the taste of the gift receiver. Scotch, Bourbon, Vodka, Rum, and Tequila will be distributed. The little bottles fit nicely with the Shirt or Sweater or Pajamas they will be receiving.

STOCKING STUFFERS

Chap Stick
Salted Peanuts (small bags)
Hard Candy (individually wrapped)

Shaving Razor
A mini-flashlight
A ball point pen

Take a bag of groceries to that shut in neighbor or family member that could use the help.
Donate a toy to "Toys for Tots" or to your local children's hospital.
Say thanks to your auto mechanic or your neighbor or etc. that helped you through a rough time. A bottle of Wine or Liquor often works nicely.
Give blood through the Red Cross or some other recognised organization.
Say a prayer for our Servicemen/women serving in harm's way or just away from their families.
Put a Christmas Card in the mailbox of that person who is carrying on a one sided feud with you. It could start a thaw that might lead to an occasional wave or howdy from them.

Happy Holidays !

Thank you, I hope you and others had a great Christmas and like me are ready to start the new tear with a clear slate and more tolerance for those we disagree with.

Happy New Year !
