View Full Version : GB's Fastest !

The Packers proud history has seen many players come and go. Some were great pass route runners, while others could stick with the leagues best WRs like glue. Others were quick agile at short distances and still others were more about their power rather than their speed.

Was/is GB's fastest ever runner a Punt Returner or a Wide Receiver or a Corner-back? 100 years have seen many come and go. Some are in the HOF in Canton while others played for but a short period.

Who do you believe was the fastest player to ever wear a Packer uniform?

Shields, MVS, or Jervey would be my initial guess.

Hutson, for his time. Shields probably as a recent guy. Collins played fast too.

I searched Don hutson estimated 40 time on google. An archive came up with people taking about it. Guys named tarlam and mraynrand were taking back and forth. Turns out to be a packerrats archive from 2006. We're famous.

Shields was the fastest I ever saw. Would have loved to see 2010 Shields covering Tyreek Hill on a deep route.

Ol' Cletidus heading for the buffet table was a close second.

In 2006 HarveyWallbangers took hutsons time of 9.7 in the 100 yard dash and pro rates to a 4.0 40 yard dash.

Haha!!!!! To be 25 years old again and fuck shit up 🤣

I didn’t say that. I said you can’t correlate a 100 time to a 40 time. I quoted somebody and it looks like I said that.

Ahman Green still has the fourth fastest 40 time (4.17) for NFL prospects, and Don Beebe isn't far behind.

I doubt anybody was ever faster than Travis Williams.

Travis Williams vs Ahman Green, in their primes, would be a great race!

HarveyWallbangers

Don Beebe (4.25), Travis Jervey (4.30), Sam Shields (4.28), Ahman Green (reported 4.17), Bill Schroeder (4.26), James Lofton (track star), Phillip Epps (track star). Throw in old timers Hutson and Travis Williams. Jeff “White Lightning” Query seemed faster than his 4.43. The Packers seem to have had all of the fastest white guys.

Throw in Steve Odom and Dave Hampton too.

James Lofton, he was fast. Desmond Howard had good speed.

Line up all the best at one goal line and race to the other goal line, who would get there first?

Desmond Howard was slow for a WR. Some posters on this site do not yet understand the difference between speed and quickness, but Howard's comparative advantage was change of direction, not speed.

right before the inury I thought Collins played faster than any D player I had seen.

Lofton was world class sprinter and maybe the fastest packer ever. Phil Epps was pure speed as well.

Was nice that Collins played faster than his 4.36 speed. Guy was a creative tackler too. Some way, the other mf always ended up down.

blood McNally would be up there especially if the race was on top of a train.

I've read post that mentioned speed vs quickness. While speed has it's clear advantage, quickness and precision can equal raw speed. Many have not had that raw speed, like Jordy Nelson, but they had other great assets. Some have had huge hands, others ran pretty precision pass patterns, still others were just bulls in a china shop. I'd gladly sacrifice some speed for a set of great hands connected to a WR that can catch in a crowd. Also, who had the greatest leap/jump to catch footballs?

Oh, topic aside, I think speed is WAY over rated. Take a bad angle, run a bad route, hesitate to diagnose....any of those and I don't care if you do run a 4.0, its moot.

Excellent point!

I asked who was/is GB's fastest player, but who is/was GB's best ever WR is as entertaining. Do we forget Carroll Dale or Boyd Dowler? I hope we have not forgotten Sterling Sharpe or Andre Risen. Do we discount Greg Jennings because of his post football groans? Were Donald Driver or Jordy Nelson better than Don Hudson?

Nick Collins chased down an in prime Adrian Peterson when AP had a 10 yard head start. Crazy speed.

There is a legitimate arguement that Don Hutson was not only the greatest wr ever but greatest player ever period. So i would argue this question is about second best, which would be Sharpe imo.

I would certainly say Lofton, although I can see why people would argue Sharpe over JL.

Wasn't Terrell Buckley pretty dam fast on paper ?

We shit on ourselves there and I hated it. We had the best CB in the draft right up the road and we shit on ourselves and drafted F'ckley.......didn't a familiar thing happen a few years ago at OLB ????

Fast is kinda overrated, don’t ya think? I mean, you can be super fast but absolutely daft and what good are you.

Which is more valuable a world class WR that can 40 to 50 yards at top speed on multiple plays or a RB who has quickness and and is tough enough to stand up to the hits?

It's not a question of where it grips it, it's a simple question of weight ratio.

Beene ran a 4.21 from what I can find

You need to adjust that for his whiteness, and that’s like a black guy running a 3.70

Maybe, but one look at his name tells you his time was likely enhanced by an illegal rear propulsion system. Beene :) The more you eat ....
