The #Packers are promoting Maurice Drayton to special teams coordinator, source said.

Drayton has paid his dues, from The Citadel to Arena 2 to the Seinajoki (Finland) Crocodiles to the CFL and beyond. Now, he's an NFL coordinator.

He was also Asst. ST Coordianor for Colts before coming to Green Bay in 2018.

I hope this guy eats nails for breakfast, that spittle flies out of his mouth every time he speaks, and everytime he speaks he's screaming, and that his favorite adjective is "motherf@%king c@c!sucking."

Something, anything, as Todd Rungren once titled an album.

The main reason the #Packers moved so quickly on hiring Maurice Drayton as ST coach is they were hearing other teams were interested in him and didn't want to lose him, a source said. LaFleur has said he wouldn't stand in the way of an asst. getting a promotion elsewhere.

So, the lowdown on #Packers hiring Maurice Drayton as special teams coach is that he is Matt LaFleur’s choice for the job, but nothing is official yet. I’m not even sure if a contract has been drawn up or if Drayton has been told. But it sounds like it will all be worked out..

If that means he won't be spamming every thread, then "yes".

I’m just highly disappointed he’s doing it seemingly exaggerating all of my personality flaws. Really makes me look like a dick bag. Go away Brandon.

Maurice Drayton has assisted both Ron Zook and Shawn Mennenga, so at the very least, he knows exactly what doesn’t work.

He couldn't be much worse than what we had. I hadn't even heard Menenga was fired.

I think these guys are going to be a top-five special teams unit,” Denver Broncos special teams coordinator Tom McMahon said.

McMahon was the coordinator in Indianapolis from 2013 through 2017. In 2016 and 2017, Drayton was his assistant. The Colts finished eighth in Gosselin’s rankings in 2016 and ninth in 2017.

“I think it’s deserved and earned,” McMahon said. “I think he’s going to excel. I think the core, the specialists, the building, I think they found themselves a special guy.”

Whitt also swears by Drayton and believes he’s got what it takes to fix the Packers’ longtime problems on special teams. Under Shawn Mennenga, Green Bay was No. 29 in Gosselin’s rankings this year and No. 26 last year.

“He’s a detailed coach. He’s going to take that special teams to a different level,” Whitt said. “You’ll see some detail that hasn’t been seen. He’s really good.”

Not only will Drayton bring some fresh ideas but McMahon and Whitt consider Drayton to be an excellent teacher. That’s important for any coach but especially so on special teams considering the number of moving parts and the lack of time provided in comparison to offense and defense.

“He can teach different learners, and he can reach them all at the same time because he’s very active in front of the room,” Whitt said. “He’s going to have a PowerPoint presentation, he’s going to add the video clips in, so he’s going to captivate all types of learners. Every minute of your meeting has to be detailed out. He’s a Citadel grad, so detail, that’s what he’s about.

“And then when he goes down the field, the way that he does his walk-throughs, he’s never going to do a drill that’s not going to relate back to the game. He’s just not doing drills for drills’ sake, like some coaches do. Every drill he does, you’re going to see that specific drill show up in a game.”

Time to break out the Kool-Aid!

Normally, I'm all for Kool-Aid, but it occurs to me that the goodness of the new guy is limited by the personnel he has to work with: slow/questionable return men, a mediocre or worse punter, a shaky long snapper, and undisciplined coverage people (that one the new guy ought to be able to fix).

I'd have more faith in Gute fixing the punter and long snapper except that he used some pretty valuable assets for those two positions - a fifth on a punter and I think a seventh on a long-snapper - and he's 0 for 2 so far.

I've always thought punters were underrated. They can dictate field position three or four or five times a game. I know they're less important know, as teams are punting less, but I'd like to see a new one in GB next year.

Possible that Scott's regression was due to bad coaching?

Possible that Scott's regression was due to bad coaching?

Could be. But his unwillingness to tackle might suggest as attitude problem. Maybe that's a problem with the coaching too. Maybe Mennenga ran a loose ship. Whatever the case, Packers need a culture shift regarding special teams. That might include looking at what players are available for special teams, and how much practice time is reserved for special teams.

In addition, I also hope that Special Teams can become a weapon. The likes of which Packer fans haven't seen in quite some time, if ever.

This requires the Packers to draft certain types of players which they have been unwilling to do so which serves two purposes.

Better options for special teams returns. Better weapons on offense to expand the playbook and create more Chuck plays.

Hopefully we see this addressed more in the upcoming draft.

It's hardly possible for Brandon to perform worse than Menenga. Can you imagine the sideline tirades the ST players would endure for their failures? Quite a motivator for success.

How long before all of you are asking for this guys firing? First preseason game? Family night scrimmage?

You know when you are really good at your job, but your boss is the absolute worst and you think to yourself “If I was in charge instead of that clown things would be a lot better around here!”

Let’s hope this is the case for new Packers ST coordinator Maurice Drayton.

Let's hope.

I determined a while ago that nearly every fanbase loathes their special teams coaches. (The exceptions are usually those ranked top 5)
He's got some players to work with, and some holes to fill as well.

Crosby has been clutch, Scott had a bad year and needs to put it behind him and become consistent. Gute will bring in competition for P and LS.
Coverage has to improve; I think that will be the main thing he does in Year 1.

Gute needs to find a PR/KR also. Teams can kick high and short and start Rodgers inside the 20 too easily. Gotta make them pay for that.

With apologies to Professor Peter Schickele:

Every so often the Packers turn up a new special teams coordinator. And every time they do, there is a feeling of anticipation, a feeling of exaltation, that this new coach can't possibly be as bad as the old one. But so far...
