Shout out to ESPN for not only making you dive into their app but not using HTML so you can easily embed/copy-pasta it. Redonkulous of them to go out of their way to break compatibility with the open web.

Chris Harris was a second team all-pro for the Bears in 2010. Any thoughts on the others people who know more than I?

Joe Barry would be a tough sell. He's been a DC twice without much success. He was the Lions DC in 2008 when they went 0-16 and gave up over 500 points.

Packers have interviewed Kris Richard

https://www.profootballrumors.com/2021/02/packers-interview-kris-richard-for-dc

Richard was one of the architects of the Seahawks’ famed Legion of Boom. After managing Seattle’s defensive backs, he was elevated to defensive coordinator in 2015. The ‘Hawks parted ways with Richard at the end of the 2017 season, prompting him to move on to the Cowboys as their DB/defensive passing game coach.

Richard was a name on the list that gained some interest from me. Dallas was a disaster for him. They didn’t have near the pieces the Packers have overall. I would be just fine with Richard. He would he a huge improvement over Pettine!!

He is competent and did amazing job in Seattle. If he could bring that type of energy to this defense then that would be a Grand Slam! The Motto Being “Defend Every Blade of Grass like it’s the Last”!!!!!!

We have to remember the bar is “Very Low” with Pettine!!

GB-Brandon

Why was he fired in Seattle?

Don't know exactly, but Seattle's defense in 2017 was not as good as it had been his 1st 2 years. His defenses in points allowed ranked 1st, 3rd and 13th. Seattle's defenses have gotten worse since they fired Richard.

The scheme in Seattle was simple no doubt but they were fundamentally coached up better then anyone else.

Especially in the secondary.

Personally I’d welcome a more “Simpler Scheme” where players rely more on Natural Instincts and attacking the field and football more. For ten years we’ve been playing this Passive Style of defense and reacting on reads which seems to always leave us a step behind!!!

Scrap The Gizmo Defense Now!!! Quit Drafting Corners In The First Round & Switch Up The Scheme!!

Kris Richard signs with Saints as secondary coach. Reports that Packers had interviewed him for DC job were likely premature. Other sites were reporting Packers had "reached out" to him. Possible Packers would have been interested in hiring him as secondary coach in the event they give Jerry Gray the DC job.

I ain’t watch that slavery known as college football anymore (pay the players!), but Google says that the last 3 games Leonhard’s D went against THE Ohio State U, it allowed 34, 34, 38 points, all in defeats.

I understand that the flagship Wisconsin university ain’t as Wu-Tang (good) as THE OSU, as the former is full of suburban Caucasiods who neither need nor love the game (Chris Boreland comes to mind), and latter is full of urban Negroids who must excel in the rye to escape the ghettos. But based on the scores, Leonhard reeks of Pettine, he whose D chokes in big games.

In other words, Leonhard ain’t nothing but a carbon copy of Pettine. The Frog should bring Al Harris back to cold, dark and dull Green Bay.

Bring Leonard in! He's leaving UW, it's just a matter of when. Keep that man in state.

Maybe I'm just naive and have too much faith in the notion of "home" but I think he might stay and be the eventual successor to Christ. Unless he is A) extremely competitive and wants to keep climbing and be the best, or B) really wants more money, I don't see a lot of upside. He did shoot down Alabama and several of the big schools that could pay him more, for example. Personally, I think he is a made man at UW and would be extremely unlikely to lose that job in the next ten years. I think there is a 50/50 chance he succeeds or flames out in GB. Why would you blow your dream, cozy job at "home" over a crapshoot. I wouldn't do it personally. There is very little in life that more money can get him, so I don't really see the appeal there.

I went into a deep rabbit hole the other day and found his wife's blog that was contributed to as recently as 2014. My biased interpretation of her words and stories painted a picture of somebody that I think valuables stability and comfort. Of course, I am reading into it a whole lot.

Wow, CMI, this is scary. I was just about to write that about Leonhard, but then I saw you beat me to it.

Leonhard would be a great successor to Chryst. Successor to Christ? That's a pretty high bar hahahaha.

Seriously, my best guess is that he takes the Chryst route - goes to some other job, then when Chryst retires, they bring him back as the Badgers head coach. Whether that transition phase is a NFL DC or a college head coaching job, it's hard to say.

As for his prospects as Packer DC, on the one hand, he appears to be highly intelligent and has done a great job every he has been. On the negative side, it has been said he would just be a continuation of Pettine's scheme. Back on the positive side, he has seemingly made much better use of his LBs, both OLBs and ILBs with the Badgers than Pettine ever did. Of course, that was college.

If he's destined to be the HC at UW, going to the Packers as DC isn't going to end that destiny. In fact, it might be a boon for UW because then they can hype to recruits that Leonhard has NFL connections and can best help get prospects to the NFL.

Agreed. I will add one more thing. Pettine is on record saying that when Leonard was a safety for him in the NFL he basically ran the defense. He knows the system the packer players have some time in now and he knows how to get the best out of it. He is our guy. If they hire anyone else its insane.

Edit: Hell, maybe he can talk TJ into entering free agency and coming home!!

I certainly wasn't saying I WANTED one of the oldies. I specifically said a while back I do NOT want Phillips. I just said that it looks from the interviews that they aren't considering older types - only relatively young. I would be glad to have Leonhard as Packer DC too.

What I've said, though, is that the what is more important than the who. I want more pass rush/more and better blitz packages. I'd also like to see more zone pass D.

Where do you get your stats from? Leonhard has been DC at Wisconsin since 2017. According to College Football Reference, the Badgers didn’t play Ohio State in 2018 and 2020.

In 2017 Ohio State scored 27 points. However, they averaged 41.1 points/game.
In 2019 Ohio State scored 34 points. However, they averaged 47.9 points/game.

In his first four seasons, UW averaged finishing third in scoring defense (17.2 points per game), fourth in total yards allowed (297.9 yards per game), fifth in rushing defense (112.3 ypg) and fifth in pass efficiency defense (109.0). UW forced the second-most turnovers of any FBS team during that span (104).

My source was the flagship university’s football program website itself. Site highlighted the most recent game against THE OSU, and then listed it again in it’s archives. I must’ve misread it. Hence, the 34 points twice.

Branden you need to rename yourself "Son of Woodbuck and Tank."

You "rant," you put "strange phrases" in quotation marks for "no good reason," you claim the end of the "world is" coming when the Packers do or don't do anything. This is a team that was in the NFC Championship game two years in a row. Disappointing losses? Yes, especially this year. Lots of blame to be laid? Sure. But your over-the-top "the world is coming to an end" is pretty ridiculous, especially since it's your response to every issue.

If you were suggesting in one of your (many) posts that maybe it's time for you to give up being a Packer fan because the organization is just so hopeless and terrible, well, I hope you do.

You appear to have taken the role of heel from AntiPolarbear aka Tank aka the white DB who shutdown Darren Charles in the performance of a lifetime. Someone had to do it.

Tank has actually chilled out quite a bit.

Often his posts border on farcical self-parody, which is appreciated as it reflects growth.

He's even funny at times.

I think they screwed up as well. He was working with poor talent in detroit but that was a historically bad d.

Worst 3rd down defense in the entire league @ Washington.

That’s fine, but don’t ignore what I am telling you or I will put you on “ignore” except it will be the whole forum who doesn’t see you anymore. Throw me a fucking bone here man.

He had Players questioning defensive calls in the media. Guys starting to do their own things on plays. In both places his relationship with some players was stretched and now he is even older. Like I said he is a “Walking Disaster” as far as a DC. There is even film of him apologizing to players at halftime saying it was his fault and they would clean it up on “Monday.” Yeah, “Monday.” LOL!!! It’s too much for him. I’m sure he was an okay “Passing Game Coordinator” which is way way different then trying to come in and being “The Man” trying to get the Packers Defense over the hump. These other Cats deserved a shot way before him with Richard having a much better resume.

This just feels so wrong all the way around.
