Josh Myers Draft Profile
College: Ohio State
Class: Jr.
Height: 6'5"
Weight: 310

Strong Points
Over two years as a starter, Myers established himself as the leader of one of the nation’s top offensive lines. A savvy technician, he combines good athleticism with a great sense of angles. He shows good snap-and-step quickness on reach blocks as well as good range when asked to move out into space. He worked in sync with his guards on combo blocks, with an excellent feel for when and where to climb to the second level. He was excellent in the screen game for the Buckeyes, showing an ability to get out and land blocks in space. He has good length for a pivot and plays with quick feet and natural balance as a pass protector; he is able to hold his own against quickness. He’ll have no problem handling protection calls at the next level.

Weak Points
Despite solid size, Myers had issues anchoring and maintaining blocks against bigger defensive tackles, and he’ll likely have similar issues against big nose tackles in the NFL. He tends to play high and doesn’t pack a lot of power in his lower body or have great core flexibility. That, combined with good but not great movement skills, limits his upside. He was surrounded by a lot of talent in Columbus, and the fact that his linemates were almost always better than the opposing defensive line made life easy.

Summary
Myers might not have an elite physical profile, but he’s mobile enough to play in a zone-based scheme and can hold his own in a gap-power scheme. He’s a good bet to be able to start early and become a mainstay in the middle of an NFL offensive line, with his ceiling being a few Pro Bowl appearances along the way.

Final Grade: 2nd round

Green Bay Packers: Josh Myers, C, Ohio State - A Grade
Finally, a pick Jordan Love can like. The Packers lost three offensive linemen this offseason, which doesn't even count David Bakhtiari coming off an injury. One of those free-agent departures is Corey Linsley, so Green Bay had to replace him. I thought there was a chance Josh Myers could go earlier, so I'm a big fan of this pick.

That, and playing 1/3 Texas Hold’em at the casino. Trying to win $10,000 for hip surgery. It’s extremely difficult to accumulate frogskins when one’s labor yields a puny $7.25/hr.

Gute on Myers:

– On Myers: “Really versatile guy that can play anywhere inside. Two-year starter at center. Captain…Josh is a 6-5, 310-pound center. He’s very very smart. Very very strong. He played at a high level at Ohio State for a couple years there.”

– On taking Myers: “His size, his athleticism, his power, how smart he is, what they asked him to do at Ohio State, understanding he could handle that stuff here, that was intriguing to us. He just fit what we’re all about.”

In an ideal world, you'd hope to pick up your replacement starting center a couple rounds later, and draft an offensive tackle in the second. But this isn't that world.

If he steps in from day one as your starter and ends up being rock-solid like Jenkins was from day one, then it's a good pick.

Yeah, IDK about taking a C in R2. Seems pretty high. Then again, Jenkins has turned out well. Myers is big for a C at 6'5" 310 -- that's almost OT size, except for his arms are shorter (<33). He benched 29 reps at his pro day, was team captain, and has lots of experience in a top college program. He can play either G position so there's versatility there too. There are lots of pluses to the pick, but agree with others that this feels early for an IOL when there were other positional value picks available.

Welp, they needed a replacement for Linsley, and as a R2 pick he's now the presumptive starter. Would not count on Jake Hansen, Patrick or Jenkins being the C. Will be interesting to see what the Week 1 OL looks like.

Depends on the player. He may end up playing guard and the Oregon center, Hanson, may be snapping.

I don’t care when we draft a player. As long as he can start and play well in the NFL I don’t care if we got someone 2 rounds to early.

Of course it is easier to root for the Drivers and Tauchers of the world.

I think with all the players that took advantage of the extra year the ncaa granted them, the depth isn't there this year.

Well, like Dan said, if the guy works out to be good like Jenkins we won't care when he was drafted.

This video is pretty short but in it Myers is big, quick enough and aggressive AF.

McGinns scouts said he was solid and consistent but not over the top impressive. Just a really good, stable, solid player. That’s what we need, someone we can count on at center. Sounds like he’s also the best person ever, team captain at Ohio State, just all business. Again, that’s a good fit for our OL room.

From McGinn

4. Josh Myers, Ohio State (6-foot-5, 310, no 40, Round 3 or 4): Played mostly guard in high school (in Miamisburg, Ohio) and in his first two seasons for the Buckeyes before starting all 21 games at center in 2019 and ’20.

“He will be a starter,” one scout said. “The center position is smart, tough, reliable, and he’s all of those things. He’s a solid player across the board. No flash to him, but he’ll be a reliable player.”

Underwent turf toe surgery in January.

“He gets knocked back every once in a while, but all in all, he’s a good prospect,” said another scout. “Loves the game of football. Good with his snaps. He’s got size. He’s a technician. He knows how to turn guys.”

Has short arms (32 inches).

“Very limited,” a third scout said. “Slow. Not flexible at all. Top heavy. Limited-type backup.”

It’s unusual to take a center with a 2nd round pick. You have to be really high on a center to take him there. He has to be a good bet as high as he was taken. The Packers scout loved him.

It appears that the Packers think they discovered something with Jenkins - that you can train a guy to play anywhere in the O Line. Myers would seem to be another of that kind, maybe Newman, the 4th round pick also might be. I'd be fine with three Jenkins-class warships in the fleet.

Could be. Helps them plan for the injuries that always happen.

https://packerswire.usatoday.com/2021/08/02/aaron-rodgers-impressed-by-early-returns-on-packers-rookie-c-josh-myers/

In an interview with NFL Network this past weekend, the Green Bay Packers quarterback was asked by former teammate James Jones on who has stood out in camp thus far.

“I gotta say Josh Myers, the center,” Rodgers replied. “For a guy to come in, as a draft pick, as a rookie, and be that comfortable – it’s pretty impressive.”

Myers, who was selected 62nd overall by the Packers in the second round of April’s draft, has been getting all of the first-team reps at center during the first few days of training camp.

“He’s very comfortable with the system, comfortable in his own skin,” Rodgers continued. “And he’s a big fella. He’s probably the biggest center I’ve had in front of me.”

“I like the way he’s stepped in and controlled the huddle and the calls the first four days.”

Incidentally Gutes caught heat for not drafting the top "consensus" center on the board. He drafted the scheme fit instead. Right now, with no pads, he is looking pretty smart.

Does ANYBODY doubt that Myers has now been jinxed and will have a knee in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1... pop!

Good job, mailman.

I don't think he'll have a knee, but there's no doubt now he'll be cut.

Landon Dickerson was the first center off the board to the Eagles. Though he isn't starting, they have Jason Kelce, so this isn't exactly an indictment of Dickerson. He was on the NFI list for a chunk of the preseason, so he may need more time to come up to speed.

Chiefs drafted Creed Humphrey one pick after we took Meyers. Reports have been pretty glowing from KC. He's easily their starter. His PFF preseason grade was 73.7 overall, for whatever that's worth.

Broncos drafted Quinn Meinerz, one round after Meyers. He's not starting this season.

Do you want a center named "Creed," or a center named "Josh"? I think the Packers made a mistake here.

But then again, "Corey" doesn't sound too macho, but Linsley worked out pretty well.

At some point in the season, Myers will probably get his ass handed to him by some nasty old vet Dline. But I've been super impressed with him. He had some troubles vs Houston. They were playing a bunch of vets, vying for a job. Myers had some issues doing zone lead blocks to his left. He got pretty tangle footed and had trouble with a couple zone blocks to that side. The next game, he made his adjustments and executed his assignments perfectly. The kid is aggressive and is learning. He has improved every game. He needs to keep that learning curve high. He already has a very solid gun snap and gets to the second level as good as Linsley. Looks like a total keeper.

Let's get that old Packer spirit when we used to play the Bucs in their old wimpy Sombrero Dome or whatever it was. JVille needs to be Lambeau South, filled with drunken Packer fans babbling and screaming loudly. Nothing revvs up a team like and uncalled for homefield advantage

It's that heat and humidity and the memory of Packer defenders cramping up and gasping for breath back when they'd had to play TB twice a year that worries me.
