Pine Apple native Fred Cone never played a snap of high school football, but he went on to earn a place in the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame and the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame.

The Packers announced on Friday that Cone died at age 95 on Friday morning of complications from a broken hip while hospitalized in Seneca, South Carolina, not far from his home in Pickens.

At the time of his death, Cone was the oldest living former Packers player.

Cone played for Green Bay from 1951 through 1957 as a kicker and a fullback. He came out of retirement in 1960, leaving his position as an assistant coach at University Military School in Mobile, to serve as the first kicker for the expansion Dallas Cowboys.

After his final season with the Packers, Cone ranked second to Don Hutson in franchise history in scoring with 455 points. Cone was one of Green Bay’s most popular players during his tenure, in part because he married a Green Bay girl, the former Judy Anderson, and lived in the Wisconsin town during the offseason.

“It was wonderful, believe it or not, even with the conditions,” Cone said via the Packers’ official website. “The equipment and everything we had was outdated. The jerseys were torn. You bought your own shoes. The team wasn’t very good. But there wasn’t a guy on the whole squad who wouldn’t have played for room and board, which we practically did. In spite of that, we loved it. The people were so nice to all the players. They were great sports fans.

When I was 6 years old in 1953 and first became aware of Packer football, not even on TV in those days, Cone was a fixture along with Tobin Rote, Breezy Reid, Billy Howton, Bill Forrester, Bobby Dillon, and others. They weren't great, but they were respectable. They didn't start to stink it up until a couple years later, leading to the Lombardi years.

Sorry that he's passed.

Fred Cone and Tobin Rote dominated in my 1950s resims on Football Mogul.
