View Full Version : Official 2022 Final Cuts Thread

Final cuts aren't until Tuesday. However, because they played on Thursday, Packers are likely practicing on Sunday and Monday. They won't want to to put guys who are definitely going to be cut on the practice field for fear of injury. So we could start hearing about cuts this weekend.

Dang, gotta be rough on the guys on the cut/ps line.
And prolly a couple sleepless nights trying to figure out where they fit.

The way LaFleur has talked since I posted this, it sounds like everybody will be practicing Sunday and Monday. Very unusual situation to have practices after last preseason game and before cuts.

Sounds about right - that's usually your R1 pick or maybe a R2 pick pushed into the limelight mostly likely due to either talent or injury. Many rookies are just trying to grasp the playbook and adjust to the speed of the game, nevermind being able to compete on an every down basis with at least 50% chance of success.

Apparently not. Bills cutting him even though contract he signed this year had 3 million guaranteed. He had only 135 yards receiving last year despite playing in every game.

Why do you keep telling us you keep telling us you’re a burger flipper? I’m mean, we all have regrets in life man, sounds like you need to get some over it.

Etling is a better QB than Love but there’s no way the team would admit that mistake.

With all the quality WR’s becoming available tonight why wouldn’t our Pack bust a move by keeping a spot open so we could improve our team at the position?

I wonder if Toure will make it, or if they're deciding between keeping Toure as #7 wide receiver versus keeping Wallace and/or that big dude - what is his name? Chris Long? If they keep Wallace and that guy, would that been ten or eleven offensive linemen?

Caleb Jones, Fritz. He's intriguing. 6'9" 370 or so. I don't know if you can call him agile, but he can move for somebody that big. We still have a herd of OLine guys, but things are looking rosy at that position. I'm wondering if we are hoarding OLineman for trade bait. A handful of team are hurting for big buys

I hear the same thing in conversations around the NFL during this time of the year. Everyone is looking to upgrade bottom of OL group and CB group.

They might just go with 11 OL for the time being. At least until they're satisfied they'll have Bakh and Jenkins for the whole season.

But I know sometimes those higher upside guys put it together later. It still stinks to see decent, more rounded players cut.

Did Carpenter make the 53? Why do people think he is a dud? Sounds like group think. He was good on special teams and was a really impressive tackler in the preseason. Dude is 6-3 230 with 4.52 40, 39” vertical, and 136” broad jump. Team captain in college. Goes hard all of the time. Dude is going to be a menace on special teams. Ford is a bit disappointing. can you be too big as an o-lineman? i know a lot of guys are 6-4 or so but is there any point where it just gets too hard to see over a guy for a QB?

or is it all about looking between the guys and height doesn't matter at all?

I think increasingly QB's need to be able to find throwing lanes. So many of your pass rushers and defensive linemen are 6-4 or bigger and are trained to get their hands up. I don't think the height of the offensive linemen is much of a factor.

or is it all about looking between the guys and height doesn't matter at all?

Lots of linemen are taller than the QBs, so between is more common. Being too tall could affect leverage.

No. He's been in 5 different practice squads. Packers can be #6.

Oh. I see. There's Slayton and Slaton.

They kept the promising Slaton.

Carpenter and Abernathy are 2 guys still very much on the bubble. There were some safeties with starting experience waived by other teams today.

If they can find a safety that can also play special teams. Right now, these guys are going to play on at least 2-4 special teams units.

Keeping 10 O-Yokozunas is dumber than Tony O’Day. Plenty of the top dawgs, especially the Fucking Center, Josh Newman, Royce Newman and Tommy Zach, can play multiple positions.

Rhyan was a 3rd rounder and it’s alway nice to see oddities in the rye (yo, Taylor Rapp!), but the Yokozuna wouldn’t even make a XFL roster. What the fuck did Walker do to earn a spot?

German Shepherd shoulda kept Ty Goodson and Uncle Rico instead of Rhyan and Walker. Goddamn, gonna miss Rico’s 94 speed on Madden.

Ford seems to be the biggest surprise. He didn't seem to show much in camp, plus you have both Slaton and Clark at the nose, so you'd think they would have been able to cut him and get him onto the practice squad. Maybe they had intel that another team would pick him up? I don't know.

Carpenter I understand - he's been seen as a special teams guy who could be very good that way.

As for other cuts, I was kind of hoping they'd keep the kicker, whose name I can't remember, and keep Crosby on the PUP for the first four games. A mini- tryout for your future kicker. Obviously they can try to get the new guy on the PS, but Joe mentioned that Dallas might be sniffing around.

I would guess that the Packers are scouring the waiver wire for safeties, to see if there's an upgrade to Abernathy, or to add an extra safety and cut someone at another postion group (like Ford).

ACME Packing Company wonders if keeping all this year's picks, some of whom did not get many snaps preseason and did not play as well as others competing for the same position (defensive line, offensive line for two examples), indicates some discord between the coaching staff and Gutekunst. But that's speculative.

Who knows? Now we'll see if our Packer bias is based on reality or is just bias, and many of the Green Bay cuts end up elsewhere and not on the Packer PS. I'd guess Caleb Jones has a good chance of finding a job somewhere on an NFL roster.

His name is the Muslim Kicker. He’s a poor man’s Younghoo Koo. And his release from the Packers ain’t nothing but the byproduct of nepotism.

Crosby is a coin flip every fucking time he kicks a field goal, can’t kickoff worth a fuck anymore, and yet he’s still around. All because he’s a golf buddy of Butte.

I would've kept Heflin over Ford. Probably would have kept Slayton over Ford too. Most of the other cuts weren't surprising.
Keeping just 2 RBs means they'll probably try to bring back both Goodson and Taylor to the PS for call-ups until Hill is back and use Amari in a pinch for emergencies.

A lot of Crosby's woes were because of the snap & hold. That's changed, presumably for the better. Still, I'd try to sign "the Muslim kicker" (APB's words) to the PS. He's got a big leg and if his accuracy has improved could be starting next year.

Rudy Ford signed, so either Abernathy or Carpenter get cut. I’m guessing Carpenter because Abernathy looks more ready to help on defense, and the other backups are “ST only” types.

I don't really understand the point of having both Leavitt and Ford on the roster. They do the same thing with very little upside. Ford may be able to fill in on the defensive side more than Leavitt.

Last year was the 1st time Ford play a significant number of snaps on defense- 43%. He's been a core ST player. Drafted in the 6th round by Cardinals. Reunion of former Cardinals (Campbell, Douglas) on Packers defense continues.

Hoping Abernathy is their last add to the PS. It is amazing, though, how little poaching from others' rosters goes on in the NFL. I guess teams get to know a guy and get comfortable. But you'd think an offensive tackle like Caleb Jones, who put out some good tape apparently this preseason, did not get picked up by someone with a lousy offensive line, like, say, da Bears.

Pretty sure Benjie Franklin was in the Jags camp and didn't make the final cutdown. He did make some plays in practice, and while he's light at 175 pounds, he is 6' and ran a 4.31 at his pro day. Tarleton State a FCS school in Texas, FWIW. In other words, he's a speedy project who is probably raw but not without talent.

Ahmed seems promising - big enough leg, accurate. I hate to see him leave - this is very, very likely Crosby's last year, and good kickers are not that easy to find. If this kid's the future, I would think they'd up his PS salary offer a bit to keep him in GB. But it looks like he's not coming back.

And what to do if Crosby goes down? I'd think they could keep one spot on the PS for a promising young kicker.

I wonder if Ahmed is worried that if he signs to the practice squad, he won't get the opportunity to be signed by another team if they come calling i.e. the Packers would have him as one of their protected players.

I'm sure he believes that the first injury or failed kicker will give him a chance at a real roster spot.

It's rather confusing because I see reports that Ahmed and Abernathy are signing, but then there isn't any confirmation. I can't believe they would just sit out.

Oh boy.

1) Leavitt isn't injured anymore. He's been practicing this week.
2) He barely played any special teams snaps in the preseason before getting injured. He got injured in the first half of the first game. I think he played on three special teams plays in that game. He was on the first kickoff coverage, and the 49ers only returned the ball to the 23yd line. He was on the first punt coverage (not a gunner). That was a fair catch on a 42 yard punt. He was on the first punt return unit--which was a fair catch on a 35 yard punt.
3) He's not a gunner. Rudy Ford and Keisean Nixon will be the gunners, and both have been good previously.

https://packerswire.usatoday.com/2022/07/31/can-newcomer-dallin-leavitt-be-an-elite-special-teams-player-for-packers/

Leavitt led the Raiders with 12 special teams tackles last season. Over the last three seasons, he’s played over 800 snaps on special teams. He’s experienced and has the right playmaking mindset for special teams...

“Dallin has been a pretty elite special teams player there for a few years, so certainly (Bisaccia) was excited to get him in the building,” Gutekunst said to start training camp. “Had him for a couple of days here, but he seems like a great kid and were excited about what he can do for us there. Played a bunch of snaps at safety too, so getting some more depth there is helpful.”

Leavitt is a ST player only. If he's playing snaps at S in a game, either they're in trouble or up by 3 scores with 2 minutes left. He can't cover your grandma.

Ahmed as a kicker is a keeper for PS. They kept Molson all last year. Cheez might be right about waiting to see if he gets a better offer, but COVID and other things happen. With a 16 person squad you can keep a K there.

I think these days teams can offer better contracts to PS players - not just a standard minimum. I wonder if Ahmed's agent is haggling with the team?

I think a really good kicker is not easy to find, and this kid seemed pretty damn good, given especially that he's relatively new as a kicker. But maybe the team isn't as excited about his potential as I am. I don't know. I did see that he was not really all that accurate in the USFL - I think college and USFL combined he's made 69% of his field goals. But of course we know there could be other reasons for that. But kickers usually take time to develop.

And how will we know officially if he's on the PS? He was listed on some lists as on the PS when apparently he wasn't.
