Seems like a smoking deal. I wonder why Kenny took that. Makes me think maybe his value isn't as high as many of us think?

Maybe he thinks enough of how he fits in the Hafley defensive scheme that staying here is the best career move.

Love is at camp but will not practice until deal is done - Gute.

Jayden Reed "tweaked something in his calf".

Zach Tom will come off PUP today. Kraft will be longer.

Why not? He has mentioned in the past how much he enjoys playing for the Packers. His last contract made him the highest paid nose tackle in NFL history. The face value of this contract is substantially more per year than the last one was. He is already financially set for life. He is still among the highest paid at his (new) position. Chances are, this contract will take him to the end of his career.

Stability and happiness mean a lot, too, for some. Not everyone is motivated by making the last dollar possible. Some are willing to leave a little on the table for others (teammates) to have.

Obviously a deal will get done, but I fear this could extend well into camp. Let’s face it. There is zero chance of Love getting a SIGNIFICANT injury right now in camp that would do anything to his contract value. The only reason he is sitting is to put the screws to the Packers. If the two sides were close, this step would not have been taken.

Zero chance of an injury? Guys have torn ACL's and worse with no contact. Right now the Packers have 2 QB's other than Love. if the Packers thought this was going to be a long term dispute, they would bring in another QB. Something to watch for.

Name me a QB that tore his ACL in non contact training camp. I can’t think of any. QBs don’t get hit and aren’t running full speed. True, zero is probably overstating it but the chances are immensely remote. That is why I’m pointing out that this is more likely to stretch out…otherwise he’d be practicing.

Agree Eason is a camp arm, so they have enough QBs to throw to everyone. Wouldn't be surprised if they bring Bowden back once Love signs.

And the contract will get done soon. I'd expect the next few days, I don't think Gute is concerned about Love's "hold-in". No agent is going to advise his client to practice when they are on the verge of signing a big deal. A (sginificant) injury would absolutely impact the contract, and even a minor one would have fans thinking Love was either faking it or MLF was an idiot for getting him hurt in camp. It's a no-win situation.

As for Kenny, this is likely his contract to retirement, sounded like he wanted to always be a Packer. Also, he might make more elsewhere, but probably not that much to make it worth leaving an up-and-coming contender. He's timing this to (potentially) go out on top. It's still a $21M/yr deal for him, not exactly chump change. It likely means TJ Slaton is not re-signed.

As you always say. I, for one, am glad. I think he's an important piece of the puzzle, and I'd like to see him end his career in Green Bay. I think he might even have one more contract in him after this one - after all, some of those interior D-line guys can be effective into their mid-thirties. Hali Ngata comes to mind.

Joemailman
07-24-2024, 01:18 PM
Kadeem Telfort got some reps with the 1's at RT today. With Jenkins getting the day off Rhyan got reps with 1's at LG and Morgan got reps at RG.

Defense had 5 INT's today and 2 near misses. Bad day for QB's. He won't admit it but I'll bet MLF is ticked off that Love contract isn't done.

run pMc
07-24-2024, 01:46 PM
Morgan needs the reps, Rhyan needs to earn his job.

Not surprised by the INTs; these are backup QBs. I actually think the opposite - MLF is probably loving the teaching opportunities. These backups need reps to develop too. Love or Rodgers or any other QB throws picks in camp, especially the first week.
It may also speak to the coverage (and pass-rush) of Hafley's defense. From what I've read the corners have had good coverage on the WRs, and Gary has been a menace exploding from a 3-point stance.

As for Clark and a 4th contract - consider me highly skeptical. He'll have a lot of miles on him by then, and while he's been durable, I don't know that he'll last the length of his new contract, much less another one. Players who go pro younger often just retire younger; the mileage is the mileage.
And yes, he's worth the money. DTs who can play run and pass consistently well are actually pretty rare. He's way way better than Lowry. That's silly/uneducated talk.

yeah, that 2026 cap hit is basically giving Kenny the Preston Smith treatment. He plays like a madman and earns the money, he gets cut, or he redoes his contract. At a minimum keeping him around another 2 years is a good move.

I don't see 2026 as that big of a deal in Clark's contract. The way the cap is increasing, they can probably handle it, or they can simply guarantee the 2026 roster bonus, and the 2026 cap hit drops below the 2024 cap hit. The 2027 hit would go up $5.5 million, but they can do things to ease that if they have to.

Clark's contract seems reasonable in today's NFL. And who knows if he'll be good for a fourth contract? I'm only guessing that he will be - he seems like the type who could get there. But in the NFL, three years is a world away.

I'm with Run - I'm guessing MLF is happy to have some teaching time with the young QB's. But man, Clifford has thrown a bazillion picks already. Yikes.

I think it's another two weeks before we need to start peeing our pants about Love's contract. Until then, it's more practice for two QB's who very much need it.

Some things were said that Clark's new contract had a lot to do with cap problems this year. Nope. It dropped from $27 something million to $26 something million, and it is fairly level for the term of it. As I have said, the team is in great shape cap-wise this year. And as was said, that third year $5 million higher than this year isn't that much of a problem either. The only way they would cut him is injury or severe drop off in quality, which I don't really expect.

Starters in team

Love
Jacobs
Doubs - Wicks
Musgrave - Sims
Walker - Rhyan - Jenkins - Morgan - Telfort

Gary - Slaton - Clark - Smith
McDuffie - Quay - Wilson
Stokes - Jaire
McKinney - Bullard

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL

On Love’s first pass of practice TJ Slaton prob would have had a sack but Love’s throw goes high and incomplete. Pressure was def a factor.

Ryan Wood
@ByRyanWood

Didn’t take Jordan Love long to target his slot receiver. Tosses an out route to Jayden Reed toward the right sideline. Jaire Alexander blankets it and could’ve had an interception, but drops it going to the ground. Perfect coverage.

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL

Another nice play from Isaiah McDuffie earlier in practice and Eric Wilson had a stop behind the line on a run play.

Emanuel Wilson just jogged into the Hutson center. Will keep an eye on that.

Brenton Cox got matched up with a running back on a stunt and pushed him back into the QB for a pressure.

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL

Andre Dillard rotating in with the ones at RT.

Love’s third throw was behind Watson with Stokes in coverage. Had Watson open. Love 0/3 to start. Working off a bit of rust.

Ryan Wood
@ByRyanWood

First team period of first padded practice of camp. And we’ve got our first fight. Dontayvion Wicks and Keisean Nixon going after each other after a rep. Scrum ensues.

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL

Javon Bullard & Edgerrin Cooper combined for a stop in the run game before the scuffle broke out. Nice play by the two rookies.

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL

Quay Walker makes a diving interception of Love. Love under pressure tried to loft a ball up to Musgrave but he wasn’t ready yet. Entire play was disjointed and Quay made an awesome diving catch.

Love 0/4 with a pick to start.

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL

Tempers flaring early. Mosby and Glover get tied up. Gary very upset with it afterwords and barking at LaFleur and the offense. An intense start to practice. I’m sure the offense is frustrated they can’t get anything going.

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL

Karl Brooks with a would be sack. Eason fired anyway and completes to Hicks downfield for a gain of about 15.

Ryan Wood
@ByRyanWood

Matt LaFleur said rookie Jordan Morgan would get a first look at left tackle, but at this point early in camp it’s clear he’s being looked at as a guard first. Getting starter reps at RG with Elgton Jenkins filling in at center for Josh Myers.

Morgan has been guard all camp.

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL

Love throws high for Wicks. Incomplete. Had him open on a check down short.

Javon Bullard with teaching tape coverage in the slot on Christian Watson for a pass breakup. Awesome play by the rookie.

Stokes and Cooper combine for a quick stop of Dillon on the next play.

Ryan Wood
@ByRyanWood

Jordan Love was throwing behind the scenes to get ready for camp, but he’s a bit rusty to start.

Had Dontayvion Wicks open on a third-7 stop. Threw over his head.

Had Christian Watson on a slant against Javon Bullard. Threw behind.

Had Wicks open on out right. Threw wide.

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL
Arron Mosby had a pick of Clifford with the twos. Another pick for #6.

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL

Number two offense starts team with a false start.

Clifford completes to Heath for about 10 yards. Nice out route with King in coverage.

Clifford completes again to Heath but everything was fubar. Kalen King exited the field late, the defense left Heath wide open, and the offense had an illegal formation.

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL

There’s the Jordan we know and Love. Off play action finds Reed in stride for a pickup of about 10-15.

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL

Love heating up. Nice ball over the middle to Watson for about 15. Looks like there was an illegal formation on the offense again though.

Wes Hodkiewicz
@WesHod

Reed end around for 13 and Doubs 17 yard catch. Karl Brooks springs free for a pressure on last snap of ones. Love still dumped it off to Jacobs

Ryan Wood
@ByRyanWood

Only took 1 period. Jordan Love has heated up.

Hits Jayden Reed on out in front of Xavier McKinney for 15.

Hits Christian Watson on crosser vs McKinney for 20.

Hit Romeo Doubs on crosser for 16.

Avoided sack with check down to Josh Jacobs.

Spreading it across field. Vintage.

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL

Emanuel Wilson with another big run - something that’s becoming a habit for him. Picked up about 25 on the play.

Wes Hodkiewicz
@WesHod

Javon Bullard with a would be Pick 6 on an Eason ball behind Stanley. Rookie second rounder having a solid day

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL

Keisean Nixon a near diving INT of Love. Fantastic coverage on Wicks.

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL

Gary beats Telfort clean for a would be sack but Love throws and Nixon breaks up another pass - this one for Reed.

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL

Love with a gorgeous bomb to Watson. Stokes running with him but Watson faster. Watson makes the sliding catch. Awesome awesome throw and catch. Huge play.

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL

Love to Doubs for a touchdown. Offense finally has something to celebrate. Fantastic drive by Love and company. 10 was dealing.

Is this a good thing? If it works, of course, then yes. The team is really really invested in this guy already. They must like his ability to read offenses.

On the other side of the ball, Clifford looks like the classic “playing himself off the team.” He’s got more picks than a five-year-old with a nose full of boogars.

Love has praised how the defense has been playing, so that does play a part in Clifford's poor showing. Still, it doesn't excuse Clifford throwing so many picks. More sacks, or incompletions would be what I expect from a better showing by the defense. I'd still leave Clifford as the number 2 through the first preseason game. If he looks bad in the game, make the switch afterwards. Sometimes players use training camp to work on things they wouldn't do in actual games, so there could be some of that going on.

Jaire Alexander on Jeff Hafley: "The first day he came in, I was in his office. I talked to all the coaches. He was very open to suggestions, ideas from me, which a lot of coaches don't wanna hear sometimes and I just knew from that point, we're gonna have something."

"I love Haf. We had a good conversation yesterday, actually. Haf's super smart. He's SUPER smart. He's a DBs coach. You would love to play for a guy like Haf because he's gonna break it down and he's gonna cater to what we're covering ... Besides football even, me and Haf have very interpersonal conversations and I can respect that about him. It's more than just a coach. He's a man. I'm a man and we can have those conversations."

Sounds like Hafley’s approach to business is welcome by the defense. Him being way younger than Barry probably has a lot to with it.

And beyond that, Alexander says Doubs is a great receiver. Mad had that one pegged.

Sometimes players use training camp to work on things they wouldn't do in actual games, so there could be some of that going on.Hell no. You trying to ruin his trade value? If no Love it won’t matter so leave him at 2. Only his second year and it’s not the Packers way to not invest a little time. Homeboy can be our next Hasselbeck.

O-line during opening walkthrough is Walker/Jenkins/Myers/Rhyan/Tom

1-on-1 period:

Romeo Doubs just cooked Jaire Alexander

Jordan Love connects with Jayden Reed on a deep ball. Keisean Nixon in coverage, but Jayden Reed beat Nixon off the line of scrimmage.

Romeo Doubs’ next rep? Leaves his feet and dives to haul in the catch across the middle. Jaire in coverage again.

Short completion to Watson vs Stokes.

Wicks beats rochell on a slant.

Sims with a great move that left Bullard way behind.

Hicks not on same page with QB

J. Wilson with a step on Williams but couldn’t make a diving catch.

Heath toasts Callis for a deep td.

Watson slant win vs Stokes

Reed nice little in n out route for a completion vs Nixon.

Wayne toasts Callis for a td.

Melton beats King on an out route.

Telfort bounces back against Brenton Cox, winning both reps.

Jordan Morgan was competitive against Wyatt.

Rhyan had good rep vs bull rush from Brooks

Starters in team:

Love

Jacobs

Wicks - Reed - Watson

Musgrave

Walker - EJ - Myers - Morgan - Telfort

Love to Wicks in stride over the middle for a nice pickup.

Love gets good protection off play action and tries to fire over the middle to Watson but he was covered very well and it’s incomplete. Had Dillon wide open on a swing pass.

Dillon with a real nice run on a stretch play. Want to know how much different Dillon looks? He beat Cooper around the corner!

Grant DuBose catching everything this camp. Defense jumps and Clifford throws a tight deep ball to connect for 42 yards. 86 high pointed it vs Williams and Anderson deep.

Dillon with another nice run. This one prob only for 5 but a good cut to get left and get up field for positive yardage.

MarShawn Lloyd first run of camp in team, gets a nice pickup to the right. Hopper might have had him around the line if there were tackling.

Jacobs pops a nice run through B gap following Morgan and Tyler Davis seal.

Two really nice blocking reps by Tyler Davis. One creates space for Jacobs on the edge and the other is picking up Clark who burst through the line.

Nice blocking by Morgan/Dillard on the right side to get Jacobs a nice pickup.

Tyler Davis with a great block to get Love time. He throws deep downfield but Stokes all over it and breaks it up.

Love hits Wicks on a run solution slant on the backside. Shades of Brett Favre.

Jacobs nice job getting around the edge but the defense is begging for a holding call.

Walker great block on Van Ness. Love has Musgrave open downfield but overthrows him.

Dillon inside for a few. His feet look so much quicker this year.

False start OL. Play continues and Clifford throws a strike to Melton for about 11.

MarShawn Lloyd almost loses an exchange from Eason but holds on barely. Play gets blown up though. No gain.

Now Eason bobbles a snap from Monk.

Clifford just heaves one up the right sideline and DuBose goes up for a phenomenal catch. DuBose is making a play every day.

DuBose gets a chance with the ones but drops a short pass from Love.

Jacobs a nice pickup on what might have been a screen.

Lloyd and Jacobs can’t get much on the next two plays which were also screens.

Pratt finds Stanley on a crosser for a nice pickup.

Nice throws from Easton to Wayne on an out route. Wayne’s made some really nice plays in practice.

Outstanding diving catch along the right sideline by DuBose. Not going away.

High snap from Monk to Clifford who can’t handle it.

Next play Clifford throws a perfect ball on a deep corner route to Toure. Williams in coverage.

Clifford to Toure for about 4.

Clifford misses DuBose on 3rd down. 4th and 7ish coming up.

Jacobs shows some burst up field but they only give him 4 on the run. Finally in pads, you can really see how smooth he runs.

Doubs finds the sticks, sits and gains 9 on third and 8 MTB

Love buys time but can’t find anything and throws away over the head of Musgrave.

Love hits Musgrave but only a couple. 4th and 4 ish coming up. Which they decide against. New series.

Jalen Wayne extremely physical at the break point, gets Green to fall over. No flat. Catches the comeback easily.

Love deep down the field for about 40 to Watson. Hits him in stride. Nixon as outside CB in coverage.

Defense:

1-on-1 period:

Gary just hit Telfort with a spin move in one on ones that left Telfort wondering what happened.

Leaping attempt from Sims vs Bullard but incomplete.

McKinney perfect coverage on Musgrave.

King phenomenal coverage on Toure.

Balentine punches out the ball on Melton.

Ballentine perfect coverage on Stanley.

Sims wins easy vs Bullard again

Enagbare had a nice speed rush vs Tenuta and celebrated with DL

Starters in team:

Gary - Slaton - Clark - Smith

McDuffie - Quay

Jaire - Nixon - Stokes

AJJ - McKinney

TJ Slaton with a TFL on Josh Jacobs during team periods.

McDuffie has been a run stopping machine. All over a Dillon run.

Karl Brooks jumps offsides on a love hard count. Love throws outside to Melton but Ballentine with great coverage incomplete.

Coyle all over a pass to Joel Wilson who bobbles but is forced to catch it behind the line of scrimmage for about a 5 yard loss.

Looks like Edgerrin Cooper is done for the day. He’s out of his pads and no longer has his helmet.

Love throws to a WR on a crosser route but Nixon is blanketed on it and breaks it up.

Kingsley Enagbare bats a pass from Love at LOS to end drill

Wilson stops Dillon in the backfield for a 2 yard loss. Nice play by 45.

Clifford almost gets picked by Rochell. Broken up either way and turnover on downs.

The rookie safeties are getting a lot of notice, for good reason, but Anthony Johnson Jr is quietly having a really good camp.

AJJ all over a WR screen to Watson. Loss on the play.

No Jaire right now. Nixon and Stokes outside with Bullard in the slot.

Quay all over a run to Jacobs. Not much on the gain.

Jaire now in for Stokes. Nixon still outside.

Isaiah McDuffie shoots into the backfield and stops Jacobs for a 2 yard loss.

McKinney picks off Love on a throw over the middle for Melton. Defense continues to make a ton of plays.

Quay Walker shows off his ridiculous speed on a screen to the outside to Jacobs. Quay all over it for no gain.

Now a swing to Jacobs outside and Bullard is all over it for a loss. This defense flies.

Karl Brooks opens No 2 two minute with a sack

Colby Wooden zone drops and breaks up pass across the middle on 3-13

LVN & Enagbare combine for a sack of Clifford.

False start by Telfort but the play continues and Clifford throws a ball right to a dropping Colby Wooden but he can’t pull the Raji. He drops it.

4th down. Checkdown to Lloyd but Rochell is all over it. Defense wins easy.

I think Gary would have had a sack but Love escapes for a big gain and gets out of bounds. Ball at the 11. 13 seconds left. First and 10. No timeouts.

No pushups today, for those who like that info.

Special Teams:

Nixon and Rochell first up as gunners on punt team. Stokes tried jamming Rochell but 22 flew right by him. Whelan murdered the ball. It’s dead. RIP ball.

Bissacia said Whelan has been working on his directional punting and it shows. Just had a classic coffin corner punt from about 40 yards out.

Bo Melton downs a perfect punt at the 5 yard line.

Interviews:

Matt LaFleur: Presser

Guys are going to have to dig deep today, LaFleur says of the heat. They'll practice a half-hour longer today.

Says today's practice will be 30 minutes longer than yesterday, which MLF felt was somewhat lethargic: "It’s gonna be a little bit of a gut check, I think."

"You talk about a pro. He does everything the right way," said LaFleur about Eric Wilson. "He continues to get better and better as a linebacker."

On how the team will approach the cutdown to 53: "You've got to be somewhat cognizant of your needs and what you're going to play with. ... I would say, for the most part, most teams are going to keep right around the same numbers at certain spots."

On Devonte Wyatt: "He's come in in probably the best shape he's ever been in. His effort running between the whistles has been as good as anybody. So I do expect him to take a leap this year. I think what we do is beneficial to his skillset, and I'm excited for him."

Says Grant DuBose came into Training Camp with his back against the wall. Added he’s excited to see what DuBose can do come preseason.

"He's very intentional and deliberate about the work he puts in," says LaFleur about Doubs.

Says Tucker Kraft won't practice today but is getting close.

On MarShawn Lloyd: "He's a work in progress. He's missed a lot of time, a lot of valuable reps. Certainly, got to get him back in football shape. There's no other way, in my opinion, to simulate that other than being out there, getting those reps."

MarShawn Lloyd makes his presence felt with an explosive run for about 50. Ballentine would have had a chance at him after a cut back but either way an impressive play for the rookie.

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL

Karl Brooks has been heating up as of late. A would be sack of Clifford in team. Brenton Cox pressuring as well.

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL

Love to Watson in stride over the middle. Ballentine in coverage.

Clifford is either super short for DuBose or super high for Melton. Either way it’s incomplete. Defender had the best chance.

Eric Wilson the wily vet with another play in the backfield. This time on Lloyd.

Clifford nice little bootleg to Melton.

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL

Carlson goes 1/3 kicking. He’s now 22/27 in camp.

Joseph goes 3/3. He’s now 25/27 in camp.

Joseph widens his lead somewhat significantly.

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL

Love with an absolutely unreal seal throw to Watson in cover 2. Just beyond the reach of Quay and before the two safeties. Couldn’t have handed it to him better 30ish yards downfield. Best throw of camp so far.

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL

MarShawn Lloyd with a nice little catch over the middle. He moves so damn easy. Such a fun player to watch.

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL

LVN is stacking success! Another sack this time of Love. He’s had a really nice week of practice.

Andy Herman
@AndyHermanNFL

McDuffie and Van Ness all over a Lloyd run.

Zayne Anderson all over a quick out to Reed. It’s completed for a few but Anderson right there for the stop.

Enagbare bursts through for a tfl on Dillon.

Devonte Wyatt goes right through Sean Rhyan for a big time pressure. Love stays strong in the pocket and delivers a strike over the middle to Wicks.

Marques Eversoll
@MarquesEversoll

Love hits Wicks with a laser over the middle, just past a diving McDuffie. (1st Down? Apparently not)

Love to Wicks again on a slant. This time, the chains move.

End of drive.

Marques Eversoll
@MarquesEversoll

No. 1 move-the-ball —

Reed jet sweep loses a yard.

Handoff to Dillon for 4.

Checkdown to Dillon moves chains.

Love pressured, “tackled” by Wooden near LOS.

McDuffie & LVN stuff Lloyd on a run to the left. Short gain.

Love quick out to Reed. 1st Down.

JJ stuffs Dillon.

Ryan Wood
@ByRyanWood

Another miss for Anders Carlson, pulling a 49M wide left. He’s 3-6 today. All 3 misses wide left.

Greg Joseph is 6-6 today.

Joseph is now 28-30 in camp. Carlson is 24-30 in camp.

Family Night will be big.

I think Love last year had a tendency to force deep passes to Watson that were covered, leading to INT's. Right up until the last pass he threw. The jury is still out on how good Watson will be, but at worst I think he is a rich man's MVS.

They haven't really given Morgan a chance at OT. I think they want to get the best 5 on the field, and they like Walker a lot more than Rhyan.

OR . . . Jaire Alexander has lost a step.

Had to say it, just for fun.

Sounds like Sean Rhyan is not going to be a starter in his third year. He's not what you'd hoped for a third-round draft pick at the guard position.

That last wide receiver spot looks like it's going to be between Heath and DuBose. DuBose seems clearly a better receiver, so if I were him I'd really, really focus on my blocking. It's gonna be close.

Jaire just has to stay healthy. Last 2 times he's been healthy all year he's been 2nd team All-Pro. He's still young enough to get back to that. You won't hear me complaining if he occasionally looks than than enthusiastic about throwing his shoulder into a 230 lb. RB.

I get the sense Packers want Morgan to win the RG spot and are grooming Rhyan to be the swing IOL. Which is fine as far as I'm concerned.

Add special teams to the things that DuBose needs to focus on if he wants to make the 53.

It seems he is getting better quickly. Stenovich said he is at guard now because the coaches got together before camp and decided that guard was his best opportunity to become an immediate starter, but he will be given opportunities at tackle too.

Observers have said his quickness and athleticism are very apparent in everything he does, and that he seems to be catching on very quickly. After just a few days of camp, he has already been moved ahead of Ryan, at least for now. One comment was made that MOrgan has already looked much better than at the early camp, just a few weeks ago.

It is quite clear that the coaches see Ryan as the guy they want to replace first, and that they believe Morgan will be among their "5 best" that they want on the field. They will deal with where Morgan's best spot is later, maybe not even until next year when they decide on what they do at center, and where Zach Tom ends up.

MadScientist

Not surprising that he's had a slow start. Moving from LT to RG isn't a small change. It takes time and reps to go from thinking about the moves you need to make to just doing them. Sounds like he's coming along at a reasonable pace.

That the guy he's replacing was a third-round pick - pretty high for a guard to be taken. I mean, you're right, but it sure looks like Rhyan is going to be their swing IOL, as Joe said. Hell, train him up at center and see how he does. What if he's the center of the future? Though Mike Wahle was gushing about Monk, so I'm guessing he'll be starting at center next year.

You hear lots of gushing about lots of the rooks, but you haven't heard a peep about Ty'Ron Hopper. Hmm. My guess is that he's as raw as a baboon's ass, and he'll be playing ST this year. Then next year he'll be one of the guys they're gushing about taking that year two leap.

For the Packers to compete seriously this year, they're going to have to get one or probably two rookie safeties to step up this year, and probably Edgerrin Cooper at a linebacking spot as well. On offense, you don't have that "dire need from a rookie" situation quite so much.

Oh, and Anders Carlson needs to get his shit straight - and his kicks - in the next few weeks, or he'll end up lurking around Green Bay offering his new business card to the locals - Swedish massages.

I've read that Hopper is fine. It's just a depth chart thing. They drafted Cooper. McDuffie knows the defense and has been having a good camp. Eric Wilson has been having a great camp. Should see a lot of Hopper in preseason games. And yes, he'll be primarily a special teams guy this year. McDuffie and Wilson are in the last year of their contracts.

It's mostly because the guard position is generally not seen as a high-value spot, so when you pick one in the third round, I'd have thought the team would have some high expectations for him. If he were a quarterback or even a receiver I wouldn't have the same expectations as I do for a guard in the third round.

There's nothing anyone disagreed with in your post. Everyone knows he's had injuries and that might be his legacy. What people are saying is always in the context of if he can avoid injuries.

It's mostly because the guard position is generally not seen as a high-value spot, so when you pick one in the third round, I'd have thought the team would have some high expectations for him. If he were a quarterback or even a receiver I wouldn't have the same expectations as I do for a guard in the third round.

He was something like the 7th guard and the 16th OL in the draft. I expect a solid backup, and hope for a multi year starter.

Not sure if you read every post here (I kinda have to) so you might have missed them. Search Watson and go back a year or so and you will see. Even in the top 3 wr poll thread you clamor a bit. If his main sell is stretching the field to open up things for others then how long can he last if he can’t even stretch his leg the whole game.

First, I never said he could stay healthy. I did say he offered something different. I also said the experts working on his hamstring issues probably know more than we do

I read most posts and I don't recall anyone saying they thought he could stay healthy. If they did, they were talking out of their ass because no one could have been certain of that.

Didn’t say anything about healthy. I’m referring to those saying he can be the number 1 or even the 2 at this point. Even if he is 100% it will not happen even as health now appears to be making sure of it. I’m not sour at Watson but his hype has far overshadowed his output.

The good:

...Jordan Morgan stood up Devonte Wyatt on a bull rush in a one-on-one drill.

The Arizona product then drew Kenny Clark one rep later, and Clark beat him with outside speed. You don’t see the kind of speed that Clark has from defensive tackles in the Pac-12.Morgan is getting great reps.

The not so good:

... Jordan Morgan left practice and went into the Don Hutson Center with the trainers.The starting right guard has not returned. It’s not clear what happened to him.

He's fine. It's just a bruise apparently.

I went to a couple of days of training camp last week. Quick one liners on some players that stood out:

I think Emanuel Wilson is an NFL RB--whether he's on the Packers roster or not. I don't think Dillon looks appreciably different than he has the last couple of years.

Don't sleep on Romeo Doubs. He looks fantastic.

My sleeper from last year, Grant Dubose, looked good. He doesn't get a lot of separation, but he has a bit of James Jones to him. I wouldn't be surprised if he beats out Heath and Toure.

Julian Hicks is an undrafted guy that stood out to me. The WR room obviously looks great.

Tyler Davis looks fully healthy. He looked more athletic than I remember him.

Luke Musgrave looks similar to last year. He didn't seem to bulk up at all, and he still plays soft. His speed is an asset though. I was hoping for more.

Jordan Morgan looks the part. I'm excited to see what he can do.

T.J Slaton is in great shape--slimmer and a bit more athletic than past years.

Quay Walker is a bit more bulked up. I'm expecting a big year from him.

Eric Stokes looks really good. Here's hoping he stays healthy.

I was probably most impressed with Evan Williams--relative to their draft position. He's a smooth athlete. He seems intelligent, and he was super nice to my daughter while she was getting an autograph. I get Micah Hyde vibes from him. It looks like we may have gotten two good safeties in this draft.

I appreciate when players treat the fans well and vice versa, but I also understand that sometimes dudes just have bad days. Other dudes just aren't comfortable with the attention. Wyatt is one of those people. My daughter brought a Georgia helmet the last two years. Quay and Stokes have been super nice to my daughter. They both signed the helmet (Quay also signed a Packers helmet for her and Stokes signed a jersey). Bullard signed it this year. Wyatt has never signed any autographs--even though my daughter put out the Georgia helmet with the other guy's signatures. He doesn't seem like a bad dude. Anybody heard what's the injury Howard has and how long out?

It's an ankle. No word on severity. It's a travel day so MLF not doing PC.

I've been wondering what the heck is going on with Sean Clifford. His accuracy - which was not previously an issue - has become an issue. Makes me wonder if he has been instructed to work on some aspect of his throwing form - footwork or arm angle or something - and that he's focusing so much on that part that his throws are off base.

If that's the case, could he lose his job because he's trying to do what the coaches instructed him to do? And if that is the case, will they cut him more slack than they might otherwise?

On the flip side, if I'm reading correctly, Pratt has a stronger arm, yes?

Pratt definitely has a stronger arm. Clifford has a better release, or at least he did before this potential change in mechanics? I don't see why they'd actually do that, though.

I think it’s a good thing the Packers offense struggled during joint practices. There is minimal “real” live game work during training camp, so any opportunity to play real competition exposes areas that need improvement.

Apparently Court Sutton ate Jaire's lunch and Jaire responded about like I expected. Not by buckling down and stopping him next series, but by shoving him and acting the fool.

So maybe it’s not that Romeo Doubs has gotten so good as much as it is that Jaire Alexander is fading . . .

This is a thought I had right away and legitimate fear of mine. Too much money invested and only seen a glimpse of a return on that investment, between injuries, etc.

Dude ruined his career by getting paid and deciding he had proven all he needed to and it was time to be the wise old vet and pretend he somehow could carry Charles Woodson's jock strap.

Packers have brought back FB Henry Pearson. Tyler Davis, coming off a terrible game, has a shoulder injury. May be looking at Packers going with 3 TE's, Pearson at FB and Davis released with an injury settlement.

AJ Dillon dealing with a stinger injury to the same area as last year.

Hmmm. Can’t they cross train one of the remaining three to be the H back, and thus have an extra roster space for an extra body at another position?

Also , read a comment last week from MiLF about Sean Rhyan’s conditioning. I read he worked on that in the offseason, but for whatever reason it’s still an issue. Interesting. Maybe some guys just can’t get to that rarified level of conditioning required for an NFL player.

Oooh. Maybe signing Pearson is so they can cut Dillon?? Pearson can block, pass protect, and maybe get a yard on a third-and-three, just like Dillon.

Mike Spofford
@mikespofford

#Packers & Love really efficient in red zone today.

Pratt just got a rep with WRs Watson, Reed & Wicks all on field. Hits Reed for TD. Then finds Sims for another score.

Quick note: Sean Rhyan taking all 1 reps at RG. No Jordan Morgan in 11-on-11.

I'm feeling like Bullard is being outplayed by Williams and is only the starter by draft status. Its not that Bullard is bad, just that Williams name pops up a LOT.

Williams name has been coming up a lot because of INT's which is great. But I don't think fans can really know who has been better on a down after down basis.

Thats why I said its a feeling. But also some coach speak. They say nice things about Bullard but they glow when they talk about williams. But I won't guess what they'll do. I watched fat Mike pretend Bishop didn't know his ass from grass for 2 years because he wanted his guy to succeed. Eventually all the "his responsibility" talk ended and Bishop became an integral player.

Parsing how these coaches really feel reminds me of trying to figure out which guy the hot college girl really likes by studying her facial expressions and listening to her tone when she talks about different guys. When her face lights up and she gets really animated talking about a particular guy, you know he’s the one she’s in love with, even if she’s going to the dance with a different guy. Look out, Javon!

Not quite, but if you're a player still in the game in the 4th quarter, you might have cause for concern.

I can't say williams is better than Bullard, but he has forced his way onto the field. Bullard is basically the slot now with Keisean playing outside. Stokes is the odd man out.

I want to be really bullish on Bullard and can't get enough shots of Evan Williams. But I remember how stoked I was about Stokes as a rookie.

I had APBs same thought of you being all juiced up after whatever they did. Now I think Bobble is on the right track. Since that week you went offline you have been a kinder gentler Tex. Did they accidentally adjust your funny bone or possible near death experience? You have even been using “sarcasm”. Something the old Tex did not like or even understand at times!

Well, I don't think I was ever away a week - 2 or 3 days maybe was all. And I doubt I've been "kinder and gentler" recently. I've had a few run-ins with dumbasses and dumbass sympathizers just in the last couple of weeks hahahaha. And the sarcasm thing is mainly in the mind of bobblehead. As I've always said, I don't care much for that, especially some of the more lame-assed sarcasm that basically needs to be labeled as such to be understood. But I've never been above using sarcasm on occasion. Maybe I have been doing that a little more lately hahahaha.
