Thought we could use a thread about other teams now that the off season is over.

Dallas in the news a lot these days. Mike McCarthy, Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb and Micah Parsons all in the last year of their contracts.

Mike McCarthy views being a lame-duck coach as a “challenge.” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones seems to view it as an opportunity.

This is the third consecutive time the Cowboys have let their head coach play out his contract. Jason Garrett’s Cowboys went 12-4 in 2014 in the final year of his contract and despite a playoff loss to the Packers, the Cowboys gave Garrett a five-year, $30 million deal. That contract expired after an 8-8 season in 2019, and the Cowboys parted ways.

If McCarthy gets a contract extension, it will mean the Cowboys played well in 2024.

Jones offered two words when asked why McCarthy didn’t get a contract extension after a third consecutive 12-win season.

“Green Bay,” Jones said, via Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News.

Lions kicker Michael Badgley suffered a torn hamstring in practice. He was in competition with Jake Bates, who had a big year with the UFL's Michigan Panthers. James Turner, who was signed in May by the Lions as an UFA before being waived, is on the Packers roster.

Now that the Pack has released James Turner, I 'd guess the Loins will pick him up again.

Won't Davante Adams be traded at some point here? The Raiders don't seem to have much going for them, so how long before the Jest and the Loins get into a bidding war??

Lions have the cap room to make the trade. Jets barely do. But Davante's cap hit goes up to 35 million next year, so nobody is going to trade much for him without a renegotiated contract.

Weird. I get that they want Williams to have someone solid, a vet, to be a security blanket, but how does this help a team that's probably two or three years away?

He still had 2 years left on his contract. Bears probably wanted to get him extended before his market value got too high.

That's a 3rd contract for Moore though, isn't it? A four year extension on a deal with 2 years means he's signed for 6 years.. which puts him at 33 when it expires. I dunno, he's a good player and in a few years that might look like a cheap contract, but I doubt he sees the end of that deal. 3rd contracts to WRs are a little iffy IMO, especially for 25M+ per.

yes, I just like crapping on the Bears. Still feels like a weird thing to do. You already have Rome on a rookie deal and 2 years left on DJ's deal. Don't understand the urgency -- when his current deal is up he'd be 29 and WRs in their 30's fade fast.

Very few players ever see the final year of their contracts, unless they are extended. It is a bit strange they extended him before next offseason, but no one ever accused the Bears FO of being world beaters.

On the one hand, Aiyuk is in the last year of his contract, so unlike DJ Moore, he actually has a good point in seeking a new contract. A holdout/trade is totally fair, when a single snap could end your career.

On the other hand, the dude's career earnings are $4.6 million and his contract this season is for almost $14.5 mil and he gets a grand total of none of it for holding out, and if he sits the whole season, he doesn't get a year of accrued service and will be under contract in 2025 for the exact same ~$14.5 mil.

LeVeon Bell in 2018. Was never close to the same player after that. He did get a 4 year, $52 million contract from the Jets. I think he got about half of the money.

smuggler

It is pretty uncommon. And Bell was a back. Receivers tend to have significantly more trade interest/value than running backs, who are still generally unappreciated due to their shorter shelf lives.

More recently, Shaun Watson did his hold-in. He'd attend and participate in practices, but would not play in games. I don't know if it was because of the contract or because of political/league pressure, but the Texans never witheld pay.

Personally, I would never have traded him and he could have enjoyed his unpaid practices each season until he got sick of the sport, but I don't make franchise decisions for the Houston Texans.

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Marquise "Hollywood" Brown suffered a sternoclavicular joint dislocation in Saturday's preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars and was at a local hospital being checked out, head coach Andy Reid said after the game.

Reid said he expected Brown to "potentially" miss some time.

Brown spent the night in the hospital and was released from the facility Sunday morning, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported.

Reid compared Brown's injury to the one Tyreek Hill suffered in the 2019 season, coincidentally also against the Jaguars. Hill missed four games with the similar injury in 2019.

You'd like to think not, but they do have a ticking clock with Jefferson and no real hope of anything with Darnold.

The repair as opposed to the resurface has a higher chance of being reinjured, but better quality of life/performance if you avoid reinjury. As you said, the recovery is considerably longer.

The resurface has a faster recovery and isn't likely to result in a repeat tear, but can lead to swelling and discomfort and might speed overall knee degredation. Depends on the person.

They'll sit McCarthy until their Week 6 bye, then start him. Unless Darnold is hurt or an absolute dumpster fire. I think Darnold will be meh - he's got a decent OL and good skill players (Jonesy, Hockenson, JJ, the crazy driver) and KOC is a decent coach. It's a good setup for him. The owners and fans will push for a QB change, especially as the defense falters and Darnold can't do enough to keep them in games.

Jefferson signed that big deal, he's fine.

I read that with a meniscus tear that are 2 different procedures that can be done. One is fairly minor but the other involves a multi-month recovery.

A little more on McCarthy's injury:

The magnitude of the injury is unprecedented, as McCarthy will become the first quarterback drafted in the top 10 during the Super Bowl era (since 1967) to miss his entire rookie season due to an injury, according to NFL Research.

McCarthy faced a chance to return within a few weeks if his surgeon opted to trim the meniscus. Instead, they fully repaired the tendon, placing the Michigan product on a much longer recovery timeline that will sideline him for the 2024 campaign.

I also wonder if the Vikings and McCarthy went this route - the more thorough procedure - because A) it's better for him as their long-term guy to get 'r done the right way, and B) they could see he was nowhere near ready to be a starting NFL QB, so this will keep fans from clamoring for him before he's ready, and C) with all their other injuries and problems, they knew they were sunk this season anyway, so what's the point of rushing McCarthy back?

After a half-dozen games with Garnder Minshew at the controls, Adams will agree to renogitiate as long as they trade him to a team he wants to play for.

Who, though? If he really was serious about being on the west coast, he doesn't have many options. Seattle, the Rams, the Chargers. Maybe he'd play in Arizona or Denver. But do any of those destinations make any sense?

Mild disagree. I can think of several GMs who have done at least as good if not better. Gute, for instance. Ozzie Newsome/Eric DeCosta. Probably John Lynch.

Jerrah & son being a great GM is a little iffy: I'd bet you could go thru their drafts, FA etc. and nitpick. Also, the ongoing contract drama with Dak and CeeDee. They have plenty of fires to put out, I'm not sure that makes them better than any other GM.
Drafting Micah Parsons was great, but they had a crappy year to be in a position to draft him.

What they aren't - anymore - is a laughingstock like they used to be. It's taken time, but they've gotten smarter/better since the 90's. If they weren't the owners, they'd have fired themselves by now.
The other thing is, compared to former owner WAS Dan Snyder they look positively great.

I'm not gonna waste time and energy trying to recall Cowboy successes in drafting, signing, etc. , although getting Dak in the 4th round oughta count for something. Somebody cited a few of the all time best GMs, and yeah, I wouldn't put Jerry Jones above them. But as an owner - basically shelling out his own money as he sees fit, all I can say is if I was a billionaire team owner, I'd probably do it that way too. And regardless of all the critcism by media assholes, etc., his team is right there with the Packers and maybe two or three others as the best in the league most of the time.

And to me, the point of being a fan is basically winning. Going 15-1 was probably the best season I can remember. Lose in the playoffs, and that's one bad day - about the same level of badness as losing any other game. The playoffs are gravy, and I like my potatoes just fine without gravy.

And as for the gang thing, I don't have much experience there hahahaha. They didn't even have gangs in the town I grew up, probably hardly any even in big cities back then. However, what's the probably with being in more than one except, of course, if and when they go against each other. And the rare times that happens, obviously there's no question in my mind who I'm for: PACKERS.

You KNOW I never have and never will put any team including the Cowboys ahead of the Packers, but what's wrong with having a second favorite? I think we had this discussion before, I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.

And as for Jones, he's made more smart moves and less dumb moves than pretty much any GM in the league. Look at their record over the decades. I wish our GM had found the kicker that old Jerry found.

Can you have a second-favorite wife?

Listen, Mr. All-or-Nothing, you're hedging your bets on the most important part of this whole site: you're either a Packer fan and fuck every other team (though you can still be respectful of their fans, like Ras), or you're like the young kids who switch their "favorite" team to whoever's been winning lately.

Exactly. I have favorite players and I enjoy watching other games, but if they play the packers, fuck 'em. Bleed green and gold...and honestly every packer fan should hate the cowboys.

Well, as a matter of fact .............. hahahaha, and I doubt I'm the only one in that context also.

Didn't you say something once about having some secondary loyalty to the Lions?

Don't get me started on that piece of shit, Rastak. It's a free country, ya'all can like him/associate with him/whatever the fuck you want. To me, he's the enemy - a lowlife hanging around here for whatever the fuck reason he might have, but it's a free country that way too, I guess.

What's with this "Mr. All-or-Nothing" line? And what could possibly make you think I have ever or would ever switch my favorite team? Certainly nothing I've ever said in 16 or so years in here.

Eagles trade picks for Jahan Dotson.
Their offense could be very good when you consider they already have Brown, Smith, Goedert, Barkley, and Hurts.

This will be a real test for our defense in Week 1.

Clearly you aren’t paying attention, old man. I fucking hate the Lions. Been clear about that.

You better at least pay attention to your wife. She might have a second-favorite husband on the side. What’s good for the goose, all that.

Chargers players crawl through ceiling panel to escape stuck hotel elevator
Updated 10:58 PM CDT, August 23, 2024

DALLAS (AP) — Several Los Angeles Chargers players and other members of the travelling party crawled through a ceiling panel to escape a stuck hotel elevator Friday night.

The NFL said on social media that around 7:30 p.m. Dallas Fire-Rescue assisted the people on the elevator through the ceiling panel to an adjacent elevator.

“The Los Angeles Chargers thank Dallas Fire-Rescue for their quick response, professionalism and substantial efforts ensuring everyone’s safety,” the team said.

The Chargers are set finish the preseason Saturday against the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Los Angeles will open the regular season at home Sept. 8 against the Las Vegas Raiders.

Ouch. I hope the Packers can keep spreading the ball around enough to keep the prices of their receivers down a bit.

I was out mowing the lawn - until the belt broke - and listening to the Detroit sports radio in the garage. Apparently the Loins - and the fans and the talking heads - are all a little concerned about their own kicker, that USFL guy Jake Bates. It seems he missed a fairly easy kick in their last exhibition, and has not been super impressive in camp. So maybe when the Loins play the Pack, it'll be like that Cinci game three years ago where the two kickers took turns missing game-winning kicks. Twice each, I believe, before Crosby finally knocked one through.

Used to be QB, LT, CB and pass rusher were the big 4, WR is muscling its way into that.

I think given the number of quality WRs coming out each year in the draft, teams are going eventually get smart and keep drafting vs. extending some of these guys. I like the WRs Gute drafted, I think he can find more if he invests in the position. For example, I love Jayden Reed and think he is probably going to get PAID when it's time, but I don't think he's going to be worth $35-40M, and I don't think his body will hold up (he got hurt plenty last year) over that next contract. You end up with a $40M paperweight on your cap.

A top WR gets what... 8-12 targets per game if healthy? They also pull coverage, etc., but if you have 65-70 plays per game, it's not like they handle the ball a lot. I think you will have to draft a receiver each year, almost like you need to draft OL.
Is WR going to be the next RB? Can find plenty of them all over the draft board, every year?

The Loins only kept four wide receivers on their 53, though they actually only kept 52 players and so have an open roster spot. I wonder if they'll snag DuBose?

I could see a good conspiracy theory coming out of this . . .

Hey, I heard on the internet that there are magnets in the gloves in the modern NFL players' gloves, and the NFL has magnetized the pigskin on footballs so players can make even more amazing plays.

Now, if we could just get someone to put a giant secret magnet behing the goal posts whenever Nards is kicking a FG or extra point, he'll never miss again!

"Back in the old days", the 1960s and 70s, players used a tacky jell called "Stickum" to help catch the ball. Fred Biletnikof and Lester Hayes of the Raiders were two of the worst, covering their hands and arms with it. The stuff was so sticky that one time a player, I think it was Hayes, tried to underhand a ball to the ref, and it just stuck to his hand. It was hilarious!

Hayes we older fans all remember for his stickum usage - the equivalent of that guy you know is coming into the room because the smell of his layers of cheap cologne waft in about five minutes before he does.

But I didn’t know about Biletnikof. Does that bring up any parallels to whether old-times famous spitballers in MLB should be allowed in the Hall of Fame?
