Suffered colonic necrosis, from which doctors gave him only a 5% chance of survival.

There was so much excitement about him being the eventual successor to Bart Starr, especially after his 5 TD game subbing for Starr. I remember that game well. We were at my Aunt & Uncles house for a big holiday dinner. Every time we turned on the radio to check the score, he had thrown another TD pass.

He almost seemed like a Starr clone in GB.

That’s sad man. This kind of shit makes me angry at the NFL with their greedy asses. The players union should have some kind of setup for those who helped lay the foundation for the colossus the league has become.

you ain't wrong mad

even most of the guys that played in the 80's don't have shit to show for it

with the billions that the NFL has and throws around, they really need to do something about the old players, or the union, or both for fucks sake

They've done a little for the older players, just a very, very little. It was good press for them a few years back, but didn't do much to really help the older players. Face it, the "problem" is rapidly diminishing as the old players die off.

Wouldn't it be nice if the players association would come out and say they are tired of waiting for the owners to do something, and do something meaningful on their own? Do it with an assessment against veteran contracts or something.

It was nothing more than another Inspire Change campaign to try to silence the critics. The problem is never going away IMO. There are guys playing today that won’t make it big and down the line will be a wreck from the shots they have taken.

Likely everyone who plays football has some level of CTE. Just affects some different than others. For all we know that’s what is wrong with Rodgeres. He at least will have the money to be cared for. These other guys don’t even get a wooden dagger once they are done!

Never heard of him - but surviving sepsis is rough. In the hospital / it’s one of the leading causes of death. He’s nearly 80 so Medicare would cover most of the IP stuff and 80% of the OP. Always good to have a secondary insurance for these kinds of things.

And no - this doesn’t seem like the football caused this kinda injury and the guys near/above the average age so…

Never heard of Don Horn?

1st Round draft pick in 1967
Was presumed to be the eventual replacement for Bart Starr.
Did well in several games when he stepped in for an injured Starr.
Had team record for TD passes in a game (5) for 50 years.
Had team record for passing yards in a game (410) for 50 years.

Seemed ready to step in, then Dan Devine came to town, traded Horn for Alden Roche (good player) and a swap of 1st round draft picks. The pick the Packers got was used for Brockington.

Horn always seemed to show promise, but never really got the opportunity. Had some injuries that got in the way as well, but hung around the league for close to 10 years.

I always liked him.

Cool recap man. I had heard the name but didn’t know about him. Sounds like how Favre and Hasselbeck turned out.

Other than the fact that Hasselbeck got traded long before Favre wad gone, had a chance to start for a decade and the Packers only got a first round swap for him, picking the crappy Jamal Reynolds.

Was like 20+ years before I was a young lad watching the packers. Idk?

His 5 TDs were the record for 12 years until Lynn Dickey in 81.

There’s probably a lot of early players that I’ve never heard of I suppose.

I did just give him $20 for his GFM.

I think Dickey just tied Horn at 5 TDs, didn't he? That stood until Flynn, then Rodgers broke it. Or was it Rodgers, then Flynn?

Flynn 1/1/2012 vs Detroit
Rodgers 10/14/2012 at Houston
Rodgers 11/9/2014 vs Bears

Kind of amusing that the Packers record for TD passes in a game was set by a backup to a HOF QB and then broken decades later by a backup to a HOF QB.

Agree that the players' union, if they are really protecting NFL players, would do something to help the older generations of players. There is no painted-fingernail Caleb Williams without Joe Willie Namath (who did a panyhose commercial), no Patrick Mahomes without Fran Tarkenton, no Peyton Manning without Johnny Unitas, no Aaron Rodgers without Bart Starr, no and no Brett Favre without Bobby Layne.

Put some money into a kitty and divvy it up for the old-timers.
