Let me be the first to say, I don't give a rats ass if we are the youngest team in the NFL. If we're loaded with limited upside players who are youthful, well who cares. I want FIELD TILTERS.
We just don't seem to have any at WR. One year ago, I thought this WR room was pretty well set. Wicks or Reed would become the number one, Watson was the mega talented wild card, and Doubbs brought stability, although his upside seemed limited.
Now, I think the REALTY BITES. Wicks is not going to be a Number One, and neither is Reed. Doubbs is what he is. Decent route runner, great hands, fundamentally solid but just not loaded with talent. He's the Joe Krabenhoft of our Wide Receiver room...decent at all...great at nothing
And Watson, well, dude is loaded with talent, but considering we gave up two second round draft picks to move up for him, well....it was not a good move by Gutebag.
MY BIG QUESTION....and this is an indictment on Gutebag's youth philosphy....
HOW MANY TEAMS HAVE 2 WR's better than our numbers one, or any WR on our roster ???
wihout digging hard, I would start with
Minnesota, Detroit, probably Chicago, Cincinati, Houston, the Jets, and maybe the Rams If you think Kopp is a top WR. That's 6 or7 teams to start I think, Am I off base, or misisng anybody ?
Should we add Seattle...others ?
We NEED a #1 WR; get it done, Gutebag
Gute kind of sucks in the first round, so that's something to consider.
Jaire (but could've had Derwin James), Gary, and Love are the only maybe impact players.
Other than them, it's Savage, Stokes, Walker, Wyatt, LVN, Morgan. JAGs so far.

I heard Davante might be looking for a new home.

Right now the value for receivers might be in the second round or even the 3rd round. Seems like the common theme right now is to blame a receiver room for not having a number 1 type receiver, and I will agree with injuries this season guys that most thought would take the next step into the #1 receiver echelon didn't materialize. My struggles in watching the passing game is open receivers not getting the ball thrown to them on a regular basis.

Equals lack of vision by Love.

I have noticed that when flushed from the pocket, he too often ends up throwing a low percentage deep pass downfield. Whether that is a lack of vision or an overemphasis on hitting the big play, I'm not sure.

I think they have too many holes to do this unless there is a very good player. They need a DL, 2-3 CB, an OL, and a WR. Best available player IMO.

They do have some cap room (51-63 million, depending on source), so they may be able to fill some needs before the draft happens.

Holes? I don't see them having holes, Their run defense was much improved this year, that's what you ask of your DTs. Slayton and Clark. Clark just makes so much money at this point and it goes through 2027. Wyatt has demonstrated in his 3rd year to have some juice rushing the passer, and playing decent 3 tech against the run.
I do see tremendous gaps at Cornerback. I thought they needed to address it last year in the draft instead they went heavy on safety which they also needed.
The offensive line does need improvement, but you drafted some guys late last year that have a decent ceiling. Remember we also used a first round pick on Morgan who was injured for most of the year. I hate drafting linemen early.
They certainly would be foolish to draft another edge rusher early, obviously they like a lot of their younger guys because they let Preston Smith go. So Gute will probably trade up draft one.
So I do agree in the BPA model, but the Packers are sort of desperate for a Corner. There will be at least 3 with first round grades probably closer to 5.

I'm gonna assume Morgan is a bust since he's shown nothing so far.
If they drafted CB in first and second round, I'd be overjoyed with them loading up on OL in 3, 4, 5. Then go BPA in the other rounds. They need either a starting or backup center, and RG is just not good enough. Is Zach Tom still a tackle, or should we just move him to center and let him have a 10 year HOF career there and call it good? He's too small to be a tackle and he got exposed last night.

Morgan was probably winning the starting RG position when he got hurt. Calling him a bust at this point doesn't make sense. I guess this is Overreaction Monday.

Doubs isn't mutch better than Wicks at the percentage of drops per target.
Tee Higgins would help

Morgan isn't a bust, yet. He was drafted with leg problems and they are still an issue.
Tom is one of the better ranked right tackles in the NFL by PFF. I don't exactly see it.
Rasheed Walker is average, Rhyan is average, and Myers is average. They could all be replaced at some point.

Morgan was kinda a disappointment even when he did play. They were working him in slowly hoping he'd improve. Not a bust, but disappointing would be fair.

If you want to give our 55 Million Dollar Man a shot go get a Dam NUMBER ONE WR. It's been a while since we drafted Sherling Sharpe in round 1

I've always been against drafting a WR in the first round, but after the way things went late in the season, I'm coming around to that point of view. They better be damn sure, though. If you can get a real first round talent like Jefferson or Chase or Lamb, then do it. Otherwise, don't. We have plenty of quantity of decent WRs even with injuries. What we need is a superstar. I'm not sure one is out there.

Yes. Burning a first round pick on a receiver has to net a real difference maker. That said, getting a good one in the second or third round would be worth while given the injuries and future contract situations. But the Packers have plenty of needs, so getting the best DE, CB, WR, or OL is what should be the pick.

If you're going to spend that kind of capital, wouldn't you have have Tee?

I would say Tee Higgins is the only high priced free agent that I would go after, but I don't know if he is worth what he will command. There are some stop gap guys out there with household names but they are aging out of the league pretty quick.

Tee Higgins is hurt a LOT and he's not going to be worth the money he's going to get. Yes I like him as a player, but not for $30M a year, and not when he's going to miss between 4-6 games a year. (Bust just like Watson, FIRE GUTE!)
The WR had two problems this year - drops (Wicks and Reed especially) and inability to handle man coverage. Teams started to play more man and press-man against them and they struggled against it. Losing Watson emboldened teams, since 6-4 players who can run 4.3 are a concern in man coverage.
MLF needed to dial up better man beaters, but the players also needed to run them better. Better execution overall: separation, hands, running the route with correct angles and depth. They were sloppy this year, and MLF's coaching was subpar (for him) down the stretch.
Saying "let's get Tee Higgins" is just a lazy and expensive suggestion that I think ends in disappointment. I do think they need to dig around and improve the WR room - not sure if that's draft or FA, but I don't think it's a big swing.
Do you think they sign either Watson or Doubs to a second contract after next season?
Do you think they trade Doubs this off season, given the early season unexcused absence and his concussions?

Doubs will not get a second contract. The personal issues from earlier in the year likely created significant questions, and now the concussion concerns are the cherry on top. The better question on Doubs is whether or not he will continue to play in the NFL moving forward.
Watson certainly is not likely to get a second long term contract but he may get a one year prove it deal coming off the ACL injury, as he is not likely to garner a large free agent deal at this point until he proves he can stay healthy for more than five minutes.
I’m not a fan of free agent WRs. Very few of those pan out. OBJ, Diggs, Adams…all these great WRs have changed teams and been far worse off for it.

I would resign Watson to a prove it deal. Doubs is probably finished. His head is shot. he had two concussions this year and neither one looked all that horrible, but he took two weeks to get through concussion protocol on the first one, and against Philly he had to be helped by two staff members all the way back to the locker room. I think it's pretty serious with him.

Agree about Doubs. Looking back, I wonder if his strange behavior that led to his suspension was a part of this too. I think it's possible the Packers will refuse to put him on the field, like they did with Sam Shields.

This is why I think BPA is the best approach. We all thought WR was a strength going into the season. You can always use new blood in groups that you even think are strengths.

Especially concerning because he was wearing the added protection of the "Guardian Cap" outer covering on his helmet.

That was my thought also when they walked him like a hospital fall precaution patient all the way into the locker room. His brain webs probably aren’t holding and no foam is gonna stop it from banging inside his skull. If he isn’t done he should be. Hurts to say as I am his #1 fan here.

Yep and reality is he will need to be kept an eye on by his family probably forever.
