In The Oregonian today, there were several articles about the Oklahoma-Oregon game played last Saturday. As some of you know, there were two very controversial calls in the last minute and a half of the game. Both of the calls went against Oklahoma. Replays of the two plays--an onside kick and a pass tipped at the line of scrimmage strongly indicated the calls should have been made in Oklahoma's favor. Both times, the officials made the call in Oregon's favor despite instant replay review.

The Pac-10 Commissioner has offically insued an apology to Oklahoma University. He also suspended the Pac-10 officiating crew, a composite crew thrown together at the last minute, for 1 game. He declined to rule the game a "No Contest" which the OU President demanded.

There are several excellent articles about the calls and actions in today's Oregonian. Go to www.oregonlive.com

The article by columnist John Canzano is especially insightful.

A number of mistakes were made:

1. Because the game involved two teams from two different conferences, an officiating crew from a third conference should have been employed. Instead, the crew was a Pac-10 crew.

2. The officiating crew had never worked together. Apparently, all the regular crews were booked and these guys were irregulars grouped together.

3. The replay offical was also biased as he is a Portland, Oregon resident. The paper reported that by 8:00 a.m. Monday morning he had received 7 death threat phone calls.

4. The replay official had access to only 1 camera angle. He did not have access to the several angles shown on TV to most of the national viewers. Most of the viewers from announcer Dan Fouts(a former Oregon Ducks quarterback) to my own 18 year old daughter, could not comprehend how the calls could possibly go against Oklahoma.

Because of its one loss, Oklahoma may have already been eliminated from 1 or more prestigious Bowl games.

Earlier in the game, Oregon running back Jonathan Stewart was tackled and the ball came loose. The officials awarded the ball to Oklahoma. Replays of the action showed Stewart's knee and entire side of his body was on the ground before the ball rolled out of his hands. The officials still ruled the play a recovered fumble. Oklahoma took the alleged fumbe and marched down the field for a touchdown.

It was probably one of the most blatent displays of poor officiating I have ever witnessed at any level.

Good.

'Bout time somebody put the arm on that outlaw bunch from Oregon.

Too bad it had to happen to OK, a school that represents everything that is right and good about college football.
