It's Dayne's turn to take starting job and run with it
Texans look to former Bronco to boost ground game

Veteran running back Ron Dayne is expected to replace rookie Wali Lundy in the Texans' starting lineup when they host Washington on Sunday.

Although Lundy and Samkon Gado also will play, Dayne's performance in the 43-24 loss to Indianapolis showed the coaches he's ready to be promoted. He gained eight yards on each of his first two carries against the Colts and finished with 37 yards on 11 carries.

"Chances are it'll be Ronnie with the direction we're going," Texans coach Gary Kubiak said about the starting job. "They're all going to play. You're going to see Ronnie and Samkon's roles get bigger and bigger as the weeks go on."

Dayne played for Kubiak in Denver last year and was signed after the Broncos waived him this month.

"He's a big, physical player who's always falling forward," Kubiak said. "Against Indy, I thought he was still a little rusty from the Ronnie I know, but you got to remember that he really didn't have a preseason."

Dayne went to camp with the Broncos listed as the starter but suffered from turf toe and missed so much time that he ended up not making the team.

"I just think he kind of fits the mold of what we want," Kubiak said. "Right now, we need somebody to pound the ball for three or four yards, and we need to get some yards on third down."

Dayne was inactive in the Texans' season-opening loss to Philadelphia because he was still recovering from turf toe.

"I'm ready for whatever they want me to do," Dayne said.

Personally, I'd start Gado over Dayne.

I'm excited for Dayne and his first shot at being the main guy. He's always played a backup role for NYG and DEN.

I would've thought Dayne was too big - more of a bruiser - for a power scheme. He showed he was capable in Denver's scheme - so I see how he ended up at Houston - b/c he knew a similar scheme already.

I'll watch some of his performance this week and see how he does.

I was at UW and watched all of his college games. Craziest thing I ever saw was at a highrise apt building w/ my friend who was on the team - this random guy just tosses a keg from the balcony onto an SUV parked below while Ron was like 20 ft away from the truck talking with us from the ground. He left very shortly thereafter.

I wonder how much Gado will be playing. I will look out for his stats.

# 35 Samkon Gado Position: RB Height: 5-10 Weight: 226
Born: 11/13/1982 College: Liberty NFL Experience: 2

Year.. Team.. G.. GS... Att.... Yds... Avg.. Lg... TD... 20+.... 1st
2005 Packers. 8... 5.. .143... 582.... 4.1.. 64.... 6.... 3........ 29
2006 Texans.. 2... 0...... 5..... 29.... 5.8.. 27.... 0.... 1.......... 1
TOTAL......... 10.. 5... 148... 611... 4.1.. 64.....6.... 4........ 30

Geee!!

Now I see why Samkon Gado was expendable to GM Ted Thompson!

Over a full 16 game schedule and with only 5 Starts he was ONLY averaging

978 Yards and ONLY 10 TD's. Pretty BAD !!

Smart move Ted !

I would really like to see Dayne succeed. By all accounts he seems a solid guy. I've always thought that his lack of success in the NFL was due in large part to all the mileage he accumulated in college. He had over 1200 carries at Wisconsin -- almost twice as many as Brent Moss.

Woody, Gado showed this year that he didn't have the one-cut burst that is needed for him excel in our scheme. It WAS a smart move to get a different runner here who has a set of skills that give him a better chance to help this team, and to give Gado a new opportunity to contribute with another team.

Your incessant bashing of TT, and TT's supporters, is coloring your judgement.
