W.Va. HS back 658 yards, but likely didn't set record

DELBARTON, W.Va. -- Paul McCoy ran for 658 yards in a high school football game and, believe it or not, might not have set a national record with his feat.

The total tops the National Federation of State High School Association's listed record of 619 yards set by Ronney Jenkins of Oxnard, Calif., in 1995. But high school records historian Doug Huff said Saturday the recognized record is 739 yards by John Giannantonio of Netcong, N.J., in 1950, against Mountain Lakes.

McCoy piled up his yardage on just 29 carries -- an average of 22.7 yards per attempt -- and scored 10 touchdowns as Matewan beat Burch 64-0 on Friday. McCoy racked up 477 of his yards scoring on TD runs of runs, which covered 69, 1, 52, 56, 52, 20, 31, 84, 87 and 25 yards.

He also had a 77-yard TD run called back because of a penalty.

"The National Federation book for some reason does not include that [the 739 yards], and I think the reason is there's a formal process for submitting those things," Huff said Saturday. "This school doesn't exist anymore. The papers recognized it. The school had a special ceremony. It's been in my records for years."

McCoy did set a state record with his 658 yards, and his 10 TDs would tie him with two others for the second most nationally. The record is 12, set by Ken Pearson of Hugo, Colo., in 1930.

McCoy, averaging 345 yards per game, has 1,723 yards and 26 touchdowns this season.

Ok its great he got the yards...but what about some sportmanship? 68-0? 10 touchdowns for this kid? When do you say enough is enough?

I'm sorry, but that Steve Spurrier mentality of running up the score just galls me.

That kid's coach is one great role model.

Unfortunately, pinheads like that are pervasive in high school sports today.

DD, I was being sarcastic (and it's really hard to read a good rant of yours with Fred Flintstone smiling at me). I do think they should be teaching these kids the bigger life lessons, but for all we know, the kid touched the ball 10 times and ran it back all the way each time. If he didn't, then the coach needs a good bitch-slapping.

Hey Brando, if the kid that ran all those yards was a WV boy, doesn't it stand to reason that the kids that gave them up were also WV boys? Either one's really good or the others really sucked.

I've been thinking about this. What's the coach to do? Throw the ball b/c the opposing team can't stop the run? Take the kid out, b/c he's playing well? Tell him to lay down on the three yard line?

Seems to me the coach was doing EXACTLY what he was supposed to do. run the ball. grind the clock, get the game over. What are his other options? What does he do when he runs the ball and the other team can't tackle? That's not running up the score? Is it? :?:

I understand your point.

When a great team plays a much lesser team things like this are bound to happen.

Given today's win at all cost mentality that SOME coaches have, I may have jumped the gun slightly.
