Green Bay - Green Bay Packers guard Jason Spitz wasn't that concerned when he started vomiting blood on the sideline before the start of the second half Sunday against the St. Louis Rams.

He wanted to play. However, the strong arm of the medical staff quickly squashed that idea and escorted Spitz back to the locker room and on to the hospital.

"I wasn't scared," Spitz said Tuesday. "I was actually trying to talk the doctor into letting me go back in. I didn't get seen (at the hospital) until after the game was over with, so if I was dying I wouldn't have been in trouble anyways. I would have been able to finish the game.

"But it's one of those things where you're better safe than sorry."

At the hospital, it was discovered that Spitz had a slight tear in his esophagus that was causing blood to come up when he vomited. There was no evidence of Spitz suffering any internal damage and he was released after a test in which a scope was inserted into his throat while he was under anesthesia.

Spitz woke up Sunday morning feeling ill and it went downhill from there.

"I ate pregame meal, felt a little under the (weather) in the morning and went home and lied down for a bit," Spitz said. "I came into the game and felt crappy the rest of the day until I woke up in the hospital. I had something. I still feel a little under the weather."

During his sophomore and junior seasons at Louisville, Spitz often lost his lunch before games, but he said that didn't happen to him anymore and his upset stomach came from some kind of sickness. He's back on his feet and took part in practice, so everything seems to be fine for now and he should be ready to play after the bye.

The hardest part for Spitz was leaving the game. He was starting for the first time since injuring his thigh in the season opener and was part of the reason the offensive line was opening up holes in the running game.

"Anytime you get back and then . . . you don't expect to get sick, especially to the extent I did. It sucks, but you have to move on."

This is very good news. After the way the packers ran the ball in the 1st half with Spitz in there, there is little doubt but that the Packers are a better running team with Spitz in there.

I love this guy, he's hilarious! "Shit, I'm dying. I won't make it to the hospital. Oh well, might as well finish the game while I'm here."

Seriously, I have a man crush on the dude. He had me with the picture. I mean... Shakes the Clown has nothing on him. He's tough as nails, and he's a joy to listen to in interviews. He might be my new favorite Packer... but only if he gets really good. Well, him and Jon Ryan.
