In a negative light, who do you think has the biggest chance in the 2006 draft to be a bust? Who tops your list? If you were a general manager who would you stay away from at all costs?

Here is my list

Max Jean Gillies, OG, Georgia. He could possibly eat himself out of the league before he ever becomes a player in the NFL. He is already over weight and teams will have to invest serious time and effort to get his weight down, and to manage it 12 months out of the year.

Omar Jacobs, QB, Bowling Green. He was hyped as a legit Heisman contender before the start of the 2005 season. The fact is he is no better than any of the QBs that played at Texas Tech. It is a wide open system that QBs can feist on. His arm strength is questionable, and his throwing motion is terrible. I question any team that takes him higher than the fourth round.

Elvis Dumervil, DE, Louisville. Has not impressed scouts one bit since the season ended. He got his brains beat in at the Senior Bowl practices, and the scouts were less than thrilled with his pudgy physic. He may have collected 20 plus sacks but those numbers certainly won't carry over to the NFL. He simply doesn't have the height or the frame, to play as a down lineman, and he doesn't have the athleticsm to play linebacker. Damn the team that takes him higher than the 4th round.

going out on a limb here, but

Reggie Bush

I was reading Greg Easterbrooks "Tuesday Morning Quarterback" which is always hilarious, and insightfull, and i would have to agree with his opinion on busch

In other football news, Reggie Bush will go very high in the draft. Truth or falsity of the house flap aside, Bush sure did look good in college, he seems to be a fine young man and he's leading a charge against the Illustrated Man fad in sports, so that's all to the good. (In the classic Ray Bradbury story, the "Illustrated Man" was not only covered with tattoos, but the tattoos moved; anyway, Bush doesn't have any tattoos.) But Bush weighs 200 pounds, and in recent annals few have been successful every-down NFL tailbacks at that weight -- Warrick Dunn, Thurman Thomas. In his final collegiate game, when USC needed two yards to win the national championship, not only did Bush not get the ball, he wasn't even on the field. Pete Carroll waved Bush to the sidelines when the championship was on the line. Something to think about if Reggie goes first.

never thought of it like that... but hey, i'd draft Williams over him, but i'd still draft him at #2

VINCE YOUNG

For every bit as good as he was in college, his type of game and players like him have not had much resonating success in the NFL. In the NFL the talent level is so much higher that an individual can not consistently beat a team singlehandly.

He will single handedly end a persons duties as a team GM in three years.

I like your list, nutz. I have all three off those guys lower on my board than the consensus. Here are a few others:

DE Parys Haralson
DT Babatunde Oshinowo
LB A.J. Nicholson

A couple that I'll go out on a limb on are:
CB Jonathan Joseph
S Jason Allen
DT Orien Harris
QB Brodie Croyle

Joseph wasn't all that good at South Carolina, and I didn't get a good vibe from Allen at the combine. He looked like a workout warrior that is a little stiff.

AJ nicholson, i think would be worth experimenting with a 6th

Some of have him going in the 4th round. I think that's too early. I definitely don't think you'll see the Packers and their need for fast LBs take him and his 4.89 40 time.

I was thinking of valid comparisons:

Chad Greenway = Dan Morgan
Ernie Sims = Jonathan Vilma (but personally I don't think he has that upside)

I think Oregon's Haloti Ngata will be the biggest bust of the draft. Some team in the top 10 pick will choose him and come to regret the choice years later.

During the season, they will find that Ngata just does not have the fire nor the discipline to be a starting defensive tackle. By the second season, he will be developing more of a weight problem.

After 3 years, Ngata will be out of pro football.

Mario Williams won't be a bust. He may not be a pro-bowler but he'll atleast be solid against the run. He is just too big and too strong to not be good against the run. He could be like Courtney Brown, who is a decent player though never lived up to the hype.

well then you're wrong because he started on a great defensive team that went to the afc championship, and that team did everything it could to keep him. I think Cleveland is just the armpit of the NFL these days..

I guess we're gonna just have to disagree. I call a player who has only started a full season once in his career, was the #1 overall pick, and has never made a Pro Bowl a bust, particularly when you compare him to the next two DE's taken in the 2000 draft, Shaun Ellis and John Abraham:

Courtney Brown:

how many of these guys are true busts and how many fail due to the system their team runs?

We have all wondered "what if" over the Mandarich pick. But, with Coach Infante' (remember him - a pass first offense) do you think Barry Sims would have been the stud in GB that he was in Detroit? Would he have changed his scheme to fit Barry?

If a team picks the "best player available" and he doesn't fit their system, he would probably be a bust.

For my highly rated bust, I also agree with VY. I think he'll be a very good.......
WR

Further down the list, I've got to say Hali. I know he's a 'player' but I think he lack of speed will show through. You can't hide a 4.8 40 time.

Who else...I guess LenDale White is a trendy 'bust' pick. I don't really have an opinion.

I see Wimbley here a couple of times. Why?

For a good analysis of the 2000(!) draft, have a look here http://www.footballoutsiders.com/2006/04/07/ramblings/nfl-draft/3808/

Courtney Brown No. 1? Tom Brady No. 199? Why is the first round of the 2000 draft so hard to tell from the sixth round?

Courtney Brown is a Bust....Mario williams will be a bust. all will see what i saw when he played top talent in the ACC...NOTHING. he got worked. and no, he wasn't cut, so get off that excuse. yes he's big, and he's a freak...but he's never been consistant, and he is uncoachable.

I don't think Williams is going to be a bust. I just think that it is going to take him eht e length of his rookie deal to finally make an impact. For as big and strong as he is I don't think he is exactly motivated to attack and play the run. He wants to get up field and get to the QB, I just don't see him doing the little things to become a complete, and dominate defensive end.

I just got done watching Outside the Lines, about athletic QBs, and postition changes at the next level. These guys that I am going to mention are not considered busts in my book but intriguing prospects because of their overall athletic ability.

Brad Smith, QB, Missouri. Only QB in NCAA history that has thrown for over 8000 yards, and rushed for 4000 yards. As of now Smith is unwilling to move to another position and feels his best positioin is QB in the NFL. Scouts are not all to keen on Smith's arm strength and his throwing mechanics, but his abitlity to scramble and gain yards on the ground make him a viable selection on day two, maybe even as high as the 4th round.

Reggie McNeil, QB, Texas A&M. Fastest QB at the combine with his silly 4.36 forty time. McNeil is 6-2, but he has a slight frame. He throws the ball a little better than Smith, but his leadership skills are questionable and he becomes a little rattled and has accuracy will go to hell. He needs to learn how to read a defense. McNeil declined offers to the Senior Bowl, because he refused to workout as a wide reciever. He like Smith wants to try his luck at QB in the NFL.

Is this career sucide for these young athletes? Matt Jones made the switch to reciever during the Senior Bowl, and he made himself an extra 11 million dollars going in the first round as a wide reciever, instead of being a 7th round or a free agent signee as a quarterback. If McNeil worked on his pass catching skills before the draft and was able to impress scouts with his ablity to catch the ball, he is looking at a multimillion dollar deal as a first round pick in a year that is considered weak at the top of the reciever position.

Other QBs that have a better chance at being drafted for their athletic ability than their skills as a quarterback.

DJ Shockely, QB, Georgia

Marcus Vick, QB, Virginia State Prison System

Michael Robinson, QB, Penn St.

Personally, I'd like to see what McNeal could do at QB. If a team could wait a few years, they might have themselves a good QB. The others need to try another position--except maybe Shockley.
