I thought the same thing. I sometimes wonder what the Steelers think when it comes to RB's. Like why the hell did they keep Duce Staley on board all that time? They kept him when he was injured and never played him when he was healthy. Its like someone lost a bet or something and had to keep him onboard :?

He did not play in their 1st 2 games, but played in every game after that.

I believe they kept Duce Staley to scare fantasy football players who owned Willie Parker and Jerome Bettis

I remember seeing the Davenpoop's name on the injury report during the middle of the season, but he still played in every game after week 2.

He's a third-down back, a fill-in, a specialist. Thank goodness Shermy didn't get a chance to re-sign him to a huge deal.

I dunno. That ain't crazy money in this current NFL economy. The Steelers got an experienced back-up that can flourish in their system. He can play all over on spec teams and be a solid return guy.

I'd say they did OK, maybe even got a bargain.

Davenport's contract is peanuts. Supposedly a signing bonus of $405,000 and a 2007 salary of $595,000 which I believe is the minimum for a 6th year player, or very cose to it. His 2008 salary is a million, IF they keep him.

He will count $797,500 toward the cap this year, and $202,500 next year if they cut him. Insignificant with a cap large enough to average about $2 million per player per year.

Contrast that with a backup fullback who was given a signing bonus of $1.3 million and a first year salary of $530,000 in 2003 when the salary cap was only $75 million. That's what GB gave Nick Luchey back then. GB had almost twice as much guaranteed against the cap for the first two years when the cap was 30% smaller.
